Faber and Cruz can't wait to punch eachother in the face

I suppose it should be no surprise to anyone that Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber still don't like eachother. Maybe things will change after they duke it out for five rounds this Saturday. Or maybe Dominick Cruz will dance around for the entire fight, take a decision, and then draw all over a lifesize cutout of Urijah Faber just to rub it in. Urijah sure has let that kinda behavior get to him:

He likes recounting his deprived upbringing (which doesn?t sound that bad, in my opinion) and pondering how he could reach the heights he has with all that?s wrong in his life. Along the way he has made mention of how things have been "handed" to me in my career of nearly 30 fights (which started nearly eight years ago in tiny American Indian casinos, the only place allowed in California at the time), managed to deface more posters of me in gyms and make negative statements about me over the years in gyms in my home state of California.

Meanwhile, Dominick is pissed off at being shoehorned into a bad guy role by one of the most loved guys in the sport. It's like being called a child molester by Mr Popularity ... even if it ain't true, it must still suck that lots of people believe it. The last straw was when Urijah questioned Cruz's 'deprived upbringing', saying 'it doesn't sound so bad.' How did Dominick lash back out? By calling Urijah a spoiled rich brat:

"He's talking about my upbringing. Not all of us had a lot of money growing up. Not all of us had the perfect life growing up and had our mom and dad to buy us a gym in the most beautiful part of California," Cruz said (3:23 mark). "I'm sorry my life wasn't as picture perfect as Urijah Faber. I had to work for everything I've got. I'm fighting for family as I speak."

Maybe part of Urijah Faber's gameplan is to have Dominick Cruz so emotionally involved in the fight that he spends less time being elusive and more time trying to hurt the guy he hates. Who knows if that's gonna work, but one thing is for sure: we've got a nice little grudge match on our hands Saturday night.

Pryor set to work with Newton's former QB coach

After helping deliver Cam Newton as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, quarterbacks coach George Whitfield is about ready to move on to his next client: Terrelle Pryor.

The Canton (Ohio) Repository reported on Sunday that Pryor is close to hiring Whitfield as his coach leading up to the supplemental draft, which is expected to be held sometime in July. Pryor, who announced in June he was leaving Ohio State to enter the league, is considered a mid-round prospect. He has been working out in Florida in preparation for the draft.

"It is my understanding I am heading (to Miami)," Whitfield told the newspaper. "I look forward to working with him. From a kid that grew up in Ohio and knows how important the Buckeyes are and my relationship with (former Ohio State) coach (Jim) Tressel and his relationship with coach Tressel ... on top of the fact he's talented and a big competitor. It's a challenge to me. I know Terrelle wants to be as good as he can be."

The way we see it

This is a smart move by Pryor and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Whitfield is considered one of the top QB tutors around, having worked with Newton leading up to the draft in April and also with Ben Roethlisberger while the Steelers quarterback was suspended last year. There are plenty of doubts surrounding Pryor's ability to be the leader of a pro-style offense, something the player and his new coach will work on.

Bye bye Cris Cyborg?

The Cris Cyborg situation gets worse:

Asked for a gut reaction on whether the two would find common ground and reach a mutually beneficial agreement, a source close to the action paused before letting out a big sigh.

"To be honest, I just don't see it happening," the source said.

I'm not feeling particularly positive regarding WMMA's chances in Zuffa Land at the moment. Maybe they went into things looking to give it an honest go but as the Japanese learned, it doesn't take long for the UFC to pull the plug if things start to go awry. Between being unable to re-sign their 145 pound champion and Gina Carano flaking out, they're out of their two biggest female stars. The clock is ticking on Strikeforce's existence. Maybe WMMA can rally in a year ... and maybe not.
