Gregg is short-term fix with long-term benefits

NT Kelly Gregg was signed by the Chiefs to do more than just shore up their defensive line and be a run stuffer in the middle of the 3-4 scheme. A 12-year veteran, the last 10 with the Ravens, Gregg has a wealth of knowledge about playing the position, and the team is hoping he will be a great mentor to rookie Jerrell Powe. There was some discussion that the team would pursue the top nose tackle on the market, Aubrayo Franklin, who is four years younger and noticeably quicker than Gregg is. However, we hear that management is high on Powe, their sixth-round pick, and views him as a potential starter in coming years. The 34-year-old Gregg should be able to capably man the position for the next season or so while Powe develops, and the team saves a lot of salary-cap space going forward by opting for the less-expensive player instead of the high-priced Franklin.

Report: Patriots re-sign OLT Light

The Patriots nailed down their blind-side tackle, signing OLT Matt Light to a two-year deal, according to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe.

Light has started 138 games in 10 seasons in New England, including all 16 in 2010. He was an unrestricted free agent.

OLG Logan Mankins signed his franchise tender earlier in the week, allowing the Patriots to return the left side of the line that was seventh in the league in percentage of sacks allowed.

The way we see it

When the Patriots used their first-round pick on Nate Solder, it looked like Light's time in New England may be finished, unless he agreed to a hometown discount on a one-year deal. But with the lockout and Solder's raw make-up that needs time to develop, Light became a top priority. Tom Brady is certainly happy to have Light for two more years, and the Pats successfully held on to their top two priorities in Light and Mankins.

What you think Dana White should do

Yesterday Dana White told Sports Illustrated that he had a list of shit he needed to take care of at UFC headquarters to get things back on track for the second half of 2011. I asked you guys to share your thoughts on what kind of changes he could make that would do it for you. Some ideas were good, some were unlikely, but all were pretty interesting. Here's some of em:

Internal random drug testing: The commissions obviously aren't willing to do things they way they need to be done to clean up the sport. It's time for the UFC to step in and show they're commited to removing the cancer of performance enhancing drugs out of the sport

Turn Strikeforce into a feeder league: This whole seperate but equal sham is stupid, and everything would be much better if Strikeforce took it's rightful place as the home for up and coming talent plus older but still popular fighters who can't hack it in the UFC any more.

Finish that network deal: No need to throw Baby Spike out with the bathwater, but the UFC needs to get a big dick swinging show or two onto network TV. It's the logical way to take the sport to the next level, and there will never be a better time than now. Time to shit or get off the pot.

Open next season's TUF up to fighters already in the UFC: It'll be like the Comeback season, except with awesome fighters instead of washouts. It'd be a great way to sort out the fat middle of the lightweight division and a title shot would sweeten the pot enough to get a lot of awesome, hungry fighters involved.

Update production values: The gladiator can stay, but will anyone really shed a tear when Bring the Pain finally goes away? And while many people want Goldberg gone, may I instead suggest that maybe you have a B Team so we don't get Mike and Joe overload? I know the UFC has perfected their recipe for event production, but every event feels exactly the same. Even the Toronto supershow was barely any different. Freshen it up, guys.

The three best (in my august opinion) were Letibleu's internal PED testing, CAP's Strikeforce feeder league, and ThunderElbow's TUF All-Stars season. Not that I think any of them will actually be implemented (especially the drug testing), but they probably should be in some parallel dimension. I'll be contacting you for sizes and addresses, jackals. And tomorrow I'll share my own pointless totally never gonna happen ideas on what Dana should do.

Cardinals trade Hightower to Redskins for Holliday, draft pick

The Redskins announced that they have received RB Tim Hightower from the Cardinals in exchange for DL Vonnie Holliday and an undisclosed draft pick.
 
Entering his fourth pro season, Hightower has played in 48 career games for the Cardinals, including 36 starts, and rushed for 1,733 yards and 23 touchdowns on 439 carries. Hightower has also made 118 receptions for 801 yards.
 
Last season Hightower played in 16 games, including 13 starts, and led the Cardinals in rushing with 736 yards on 153 attempts (4.8 ypc). He also topped the team with five rushing TDs to give him 23 over the last three years, tied for the 10th-most in the NFL over that span.
 
In 2009, Hightower rushed 143 times for 598 yards (4.2 ypc) and eight TDs. That followed a rookie campaign in which he appeared in all 16 regular season games and led the Cardinals with 10 rushing touchdowns, tied for eighth in the NFL.

The 6-5, 288-pound Holliday is a 14-year NFL veteran who had 42 tackles (23 solos), 2.5 sacks and four passes defensed for the Redskins while playing in 15 games with two starts at defensive end. 

After playing two seasons with the Chiefs (2003-04), Holliday joined the Dolphins and played four seasons (2005-08) in Miami before spending the 2009 season with the Broncos.

The way we see it

This is a deal that would appear to benefit both teams, but particularly the Redskins. Hightower, who became expendable after the Cardinals selected RB Ryan Williams in the second round of this year's draft, is a very solid dual-purpose back, his problems holding on to the ball notwithstanding. He should be able to compete for carries in Washington.

Holliday adds depth and experience to an Arizona D-line that just lost reserve free agent Alan Branch, who signed with the division-rival Seahawks.

Sarah Kaufman isn't the only Strikeforce fighter getting thrown back into the title mix because there's no one else in her division. Look what's happening at 170:

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker isn't discussing the release in detail, nor are other officials. However, Overeem had just one fight remaining on his current deal, and sources told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) discussions about his Strikeforce future weren't exactly productive in recent weeks.

Did you notice Showtime decided to pretend Overeem's Friday release didn't happen?
