On top of finding their QB of the future and getting a new coaching staff acclimated, one of the Titans' big concerns during the lockout has been keeping talented — but troubled — WR Kenny Britt on the straight and narrow.
Britt's arrest Tuesday, his fifth run-in with the law since being selected 30th overall by the Titans in the 2009 draft, is hardly what the club had in mind.
Britt, 22, was charged with eluding police, lying to an officer and obstructing governmental function. The first charge is a third-degree felony — the latter charges are misdemeanors. Britt is scheduled to appear in a Hudson County, N.J., courtroom on April 19.
This is hardly the first time Britt has been in the news for his questionable decision making.
In February, theft-by-deception charges against Britt were downgraded to a misdemeanor after he failed to post bail for a friend who was arrested in January, 2010.
Last October, Britt was involved in a bar fight and suspended by former head coach Jeff Fisher for the beginning of a Week Seven game against the Eagles. Our sources say Britt was lucky to escape criminal charges for the incident.
In August ’10, Britt was given a misdemeanor citation for driving on a revoked license.
Police in New Jersey had suspended Britt's license following a January ’10 arrest for outstanding traffic warrants.
In addition to his legal transgressions, the Titans were unhappy with Britt last offseason for reporting to training camp out of shape.
So what's next?
Once a new labor agreement is settled, Britt, now a repeat offender, could be subject to discipline from the league.
The way we hear it, while the club's patience is clearly wearing thin, it is not expected to do anything drastic in terms of handling its immature pass catcher — yet.
He is likely to have a long conversation with new head coach Mike Munchak — a no-nonsense guy — about making better decisions. Munchak also could choose to discipline Britt beyond what the league decides.
But we're told Britt's latest slip-up should not have a big impact on the Titans' draft plans. While the team could target a WR in the middle-to-late rounds, don't expect the club to go in that direction early. There are simply too many other needs to fill, and with Britt not expected to miss much time, the club likely will ride it out and hope that the light bulb goes on in a hurry for one of its most talented players.
