Let's take a look at the latest developments around the league the day before kickoff. Most decisions deal with some kind of injury this week, so we're going to keep our focus in fantasyland on injuries.
Look elsewhere, they're out
- Texans RB Derrick Ward (ankle) has been ruled out. He hasn't been able to practice, so look for backup Ben Tate to spell Arian Foster. Tate had a great preseason and played lights-out in Week One. Ward needs to heal up or he'll lose his backup status to Foster, something many feel he may have already lost. At this point, grab Tate.
- Bears RB Marion Barber (calf) was limited in practice Wednesday, then didn't practice after that and is now doubtful. Look for Matt Forté to carry the load with Kahlil Bell spelling him. Forte could have a huge game if it turns into a shootout against the Saints.
- Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (shoulder) has been ruled out with his bum shoulder, but the team feels he can go next week. If you have him, you have to stash him and hope for the best. Look for the Seahawks to start Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu, with Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate playing the slot. Keep all Seahawks on the bench.
- Raiders WR Jacoby Ford (hamstring) is out, but his Week One disappointment of 22 yards would have put him on the bench this week anyway. There's a chance Denarius Moore and Chaz Schilens will start because of injuries.
Not ruled out, but it's not looking good
- Rams RB Steven Jackson (quadriceps) refuses to rule himself out, which doesn't help owners of Cadillac Williams. Jackson probably won't play, with Williams seeing most of the carries.
- Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) hasn't practiced all week and is not expected to play. Look for Willis McGahee and Lance Ball to carry the load. He's not exciting, but McGahee's starting if you're in desperate need of a back.
- Texans WR Kevin Walter (shoulder) enters the weekend expecting to be a game-time decision. While officially questionable, he's not expected to play. This could be one of the weeks that see Jacoby Jones explode on the scene as he won't share playing time. He's a solid No. 3 with No. 2 upside.
- Bears WR Roy Williams (groin) enters the weekend questionable and will be another game-time decision. However, Johnny Knox is more than capable of taking over. I don't expect Williams to play and, if he does, probably won't be effective, clearing the way for Knox, at least for one week.
- Jaguars WR Jason Hill (hip) was able to practice only on a limited basis. He's looking doubtful this week and is not expected to play. The Jaguars are a run-first team, and outside Mike Thomas, the other wide receivers aren't worth owning.
The dreaded game-time decision
- Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (thigh) hasn't been able to practice, and although Jerry Jones originally thought he would be able to play, the owner now says it'll be a game-time decision. If he can't go, look for Kevin Ogletree to start, though what he brings to the table no one knows. Tony Romo leans on Miles Austin and Jason Witten, anyway.
- Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (knee) wants to play and says he'll be ready to go. However, head coach Tom Coughlin says the doctors will have the final word. Nicks was limited at practice this week, but some of that is the team being cautious.
- Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (knee) doesn't sound too optimistic about getting on the field. If he doesn't, look for Denarius Moore and Chaz Schilens to start. Until the passing attack improves, keep them on your bench.
- 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (foot) needs to show us something first, but until then, let him ride the pine. Until he even gets on the field, there's no reason to put him in your lineup. We know his foot is not 100 percent. Crabtree enters the weekend questionable. Josh Morgan would start.
- Broncos WR Brandon Lloyd (groin) is mum on whether he's going to play. The way Eric Decker has been playing and considering their expectations for him, he'll eat into Lloyd's numbers if Lloyd is not 100 percent.
It's 50/50 but looking to play
- Texans RB Arian Foster (hamstring) is good to go per head coach Gary Kubiak, so expect to see him with about 20 to 25 touches. Obviously he gets into your lineup, but if you own Ben Tate in larger leagues, Tate is worth consideration as an injury fill-in. When Foster runs the show, he sees most of the touches.
- Saints WR Lance Moore (groin) should make his debut this weekend. His practices have been limited, so he hasn't fully tested his groin yet but is still expected to play. Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem are capable replacements in that offense to the point I'm not sure why the team would risk a setback. So, if Moore plays, one would assume he's good to go.
- Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) will play despite being limited in practice Friday and not practicing Thursday. The way Matthew Stafford's playing, "Megatron" owners need him in and by all accounts will get him.
They'll play
- Bengals QB Andy Dalton (wrist) says he's good to go, and head coach Marvin Lewis said he'd play. Keep him on your bench.
- Rams QB Sam Bradford (finger) went through a full practice Friday and, barring a setback, will play. You probably have better options.
- Chargers RB Mike Tolbert (knee) isn't even on the injury report. He's good to go and makes a No. 2 fantasy back.
- Raiders RB Darren McFadden (shoulder) returned to full practice Friday and will play. He's a No. 1 fantasy back.
- Ravens WR Lee Evans (ankle) has gone through two straight practices and will play. This week he's a flex option at best.
- Bills WR Stevie Johnson (groin) went through practice Friday and is good to go. He's a No. 2 fantasy receiver this week.
- Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez (hamstring) has been practicing, but without Peyton Manning, he has no value.
- Vikings WR Michael Jenkins (groin) has not made much noise about his injury and is good to go, but keep him on your bench.
- Falcons WR Harry Douglas (concussion) is probable and should play. He should be on the waiver wire or your bench.
- Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi (hamstring) practiced Thursday and Friday and will play but should be on your bench.
- Eagles WR Steve Smith (knee) is good to go and has a few set plays for him but won't see the field enough to start him.
- Chargers WR Patrick Crayton (ankle) will finally play but is a nonfactor in fantasy and should remain on the wire.
- Raiders TE Kevin Boss (knee) will make his season debut this week but should remain on your waiver wire.
Long-term injuries
- Saints WR Marques Colston (collarbone) is gone for a minimum of four weeks, putting him back in play in Week Six.
- Rams WR Danny Amendola (elbow) is out for 4-5 weeks. Brandon Gibson should pick up most of his numbers until then.
- Bucs WR Sammie Stroughter (foot) is having foot surgery and will be out for a few weeks. Look for Preston Parker to take over his time.
- Bills WR Marcus Easley (heart) has been put on I.R., and it's not known if this condition is career-threatening.
- Chargers PK Nate Kaeding (knee) is out for the season, and the team signed Nick Novak to replace him.
