A brief history of The Reem

If you've got 82 minutes to spare, check out this HDNet special on Alistair Overeem's post-Pride exploits in Japan.

The "Countdown to UFC 141" show gave a good summary of his Pride era, which ended with the low-point of Overeem's career, a three-fight losing streak to Little Nog, Ricardo Arona, and Shogun Rua (for the second time).  After that it kinda glossed over everything but his Strikeforce bouts (and completely ignored the shitty Werdum fight), since that's all Zuffa has the rights for.  This HDNet show covers all his work under the Dream, Dynamite, and K-1 banners, which is basically everything else except a couple for Ultimate Glory in Holland.

After the Shogun loss, Overeem moved up to heavyweight full-time, and has since lost only once in MMA and twice in K-1, compiling a combined record of 20-3-1 in about four years.  His MMA competitors during this period were mostly scrubs, with Werdum and Cro-Cop being his best opponents.  But his K-1 opponents were the very best in the world, and The Reem beat almost all of them, and this despite having only 4 pro kickboxing fights prior to answering the challenge from 77-fight veteran Badr Hari in 2008.  Hari evened the score a year later, and a close and controversial decision loss to Remy Bojansky were Alistair's only fails with the big gloves on.

In particular, check out the Teixeira and Fujita fights for two of the most brutal knee KO's you'll ever see.  After the jump is The Reem's last (and rather embarrassing) MMA loss to Sergei Kharitonov in September 2007, one month before he won the Strikeforce title from Paul "The Angry Beaver" Buentello.  Overeem had TKO'd Kharitonov in Pride the year before, but Sergei got even this time by making Alistair literally run away and then plank on the ropes.  And so we see that The Reem is indeed a killer striker, but he's not unbeatable.

UFC 141 Bonuses: Diaz vs. Cerrone Earns Fight of Night Honors

Nate Diaz, Donald Cerrone and Johny Hendricks each walked out of UFC 141 Friday night $75,000 richer.

In the Fight of the Night, Diaz outboxed Cerrone through three rounds for a convincing decision win (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The fight was strictly a standup affair, with Diaz sticking to his rapid-fire boxing and Cerrone mixing in his Muay Thai kickboxing background.

While Diaz was the clear winner with his accurate punches, Cerrone drew excitement from the Vegas crowd every time he chopped Diaz to the floor with leg kicks.

Hendricks won Knockout of the Night bonus with his 12-second finish over former title contender Jon Fitch. Hendricks landed a big left hand to flatten Fitch and then followed with one more before referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in.

There were no submission finishes on the card. In the 10 fights, seven went to decisions while three ended in (T)KOs.

Johny Hendricks Knocks Out Jon Fitch

Filed under:

Johny Hendricks Knocks Out Jon Fitch at UFC 141.The unthinkable has happened: Jon Fitch has been finished. And it took Johny Hendricks only 12 seconds to do it on Friday night at UFC 141.

Hendricks landed a huge left hand to Fitch's jaw that had Fitch falling straight backward, with his head bouncing off the canvas. Hendricks pounced and landed one more huge punch on the ground before referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in to stop the fight.

It was a stunning upset victory voer Hendricks, who improves to 12-1 and earns by far the biggest win of his MMA career.

"I have a left hand," Hendricks said. "Everybody's been counting me out. I knew if I hit him with it I could lay him out."

Fitch, who falls to 23-4-1, had never been finished in the UFC and hadn't been finished in any promotion since 2002. Fitch has long been regarded as the No. 2 welterweight in the world behind Georges St. Pierre, but now there's a new kid on the block: Hendricks, who improves to 12-1, is for real.

Alistair Overeem Sends Brock Lesnar Into Retirement at UFC 141

Alistair Overeem stops Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.Alistair Overeem needed less than half of one round to win his first fight in the UFC, landing hard kicks and knees to Brock Lesnar's body and winning a first-round technical knockout at UFC 141.

Overeem landed a kick to the liver that knocked Lesnar down, then swarmed on him and landed punches on the ground until referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in to stop the fight. The bout lasted only two minutes, 26 seconds.

Afterward Lesnar, who has been battling diverticulitis over the last two years, said he would no longer compete in the UFC.

"My hat's off to Alistair Overeem," Lesnar said afterward. "I've had a difficult couple of years and I'm going to officially say tonight was the last time you're going to see me in the Octagon."

A former WWE star, Lesnar has enough money that he never has to work again, and it's no surprise that he doesn't feel the need to put his body through the rigors of an MMA career anymore.

As for Overeem, he was as good as advertised.

"Today was all about bad intentions -- first or second round, I promised," Overeem said afterward, referring to his pre-fight prediction that he would finish Lesnar in one or two rounds.

Lesnar, surprisingly, opened the fight by throwing a couple of leg kicks, and Overeem responded by throwing a looping right hand that missed. A minute into the first round Lesnar attempted a single-leg takedown, and Overeem shook him off. Overeem went on the attack and landed knees to Lesnar's body, while Lesnar landed a punch that opened a cut over Overeem's right eye.

But those attacks to Lesnar's body were all Overeem needed. Lesnar's striking defense just isn't good enough to handle the striking of a former K-1 champion like Overeem, who referred to his finishing shot as a "K-1 body kick.

Overeem, a former champion in Strikeforce, Dream and K-1, will now face UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. That fight will determine who's at the top of a UFC heavyweight division that no longer includes Lesnar.

The Soz forgot he announced his retirement

Krzysztof Soszynski doesn't remember much about the night after his nasty KO loss to Igor Pokrajac. So when he watched Monday's UFC 141 video blog, he got to be surprised along with the rest of us to hear about his decision to retire. And while he's backing away from the finality of the statement now that his eggs are slightly less scrambled, that doesn't mean walking away is off the table:

"The knockout has nothing to do with anything," he said. "I've been dealing with a lot of injuries. Ever since UFC 110 in Austrailia with that crazy war with Stephan Bonnar, my body has not been the same. Not even close. I don't think I've ever fought close to 70 percent since that first fight with Bonnar. The retirement thing has been on my mind for a little while, only because I can't train the way I want to train because of all these injuries.

"I have to go see my doctor again this week. I have to see if I need any more surgeries, and it's just been really rough, mentally. I've trained 15 weeks for my camps, and I've pushed my body to the limit, but there's no security. It's myself, too. I started in the sport really late. I don't have those kind of skills that the top fighters do where I can make it in the top-five, top-10, and start making $50,000, $60,000 and $70,000 per fight. I'm in the lower echelon when it comes to the money the UFC gives out to the fighters, and it's tough to survive with that kind of money. I have to supplement my income. I have to work other jobs. So moving on from MMA is something that's been on my mind for the last little bit."

Last time we got a peek at the paysheets, K-Soz was making 10k/10k at UFC 116 and managed to nab Fight of the Night honors for 75k. Even without bonuses, 3 fights a year plus sponsor money ain't the worst amount of scratch a fighter can make. But it's never too early to start thinking about your career post-UFC, especially when your body is starting to betray you and you're finding yourself on the wrong end of knockouts against up and comers.

Nate Diaz talks TUF

Nate Diaz talks to UFC.com about his early days of getting into training and eventually ending up on the Ultimate Fighter. Both events seem to have been spurred on by his brother Nick, which is kinda surprising since you'd think all the advice Nick gives out would lead to incarceration or an early grave, not wealth and success.

?We were sitting at home when they started The Ultimate Fighter, and we?re like ?this s**t is ridiculous,?? said Nate. ?We were just criticizing it horribly and we?re laughing at it, saying ?hell no, I would never do that.? And then they called him for The Ultimate Fighter, but Nick was like ?I?m not doing that show.??

Nick refused a spot on season four of TUF, but when the call came in for season five, it was for Nate. The younger Diaz refused, even though Cesar Gracie believed he should do it. Then Nick entered the picture.

?I think you should do it,? Nick told his brother.

So he did, but as soon as taping began, he wanted out.

?I said I?m getting out of here,? recalled Nate. ?I don?t even know why I?m here.?

But then his first fight against Rob Emerson was set.

?At that point I couldn?t leave, because if I left, it would be like I didn?t want to fight somebody.?

Diaz beat Emerson, and again, he would lie awake at night plotting for a way to leave. He didn?t do it though, and after beating Corey Hill, Gray Maynard, and Manny Gamburyan, he won the season title and a UFC contract.

?It was a good thing I stayed because it was like a shortcut and it got me right into the UFC,? he said. ?It was the best thing that could have happened. I had no money, I was broke, I was a kid, and I had no direction, and at that point it kinda gave me a direction.?

Nate's time on the Ultimate Fighter also solidified his reputation as 'the sane Diaz brother', with the one major spat on the show involving him being mostly Karo Parisyan's fault. Although to be fair to Karo, did Nate know who he was bro?

Dana White Not Happy About Donald Cerrone-Nate Diaz Press Conference Scuffle

Filed under:

Nate Diaz shoves Donald CerroneLAS VEGAS -- Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz were playing so nicely together for most of Wednesday's UFC 141 pre-fight press conference. Then they came face to face for the customary staredown photo op, and that's when it all fell apart.

While the two posed for the cameras in one another's personal space, Cerrone muttered something to Diaz that made the Stockton, Calif.-native slap Cerrone's trademark cowboy hat off his head and then back him up with a shove before the two were separated.

And really, UFC president Dana White should have seen this one coming, but he too was taken in by their amicable demeanors up until that point, he said.

"I was expecting it," said White, who chastised himself for being too slow to step in. "But they were being so cool today, I didn't see it coming."

According to White, "Cerrone said something like, 'I'm getting in that [expletive] tomorrow' or something. ...That's why [Diaz] did it." But of course, this feud has deeper roots, and both men know it.

The story goes that, well before this fight was signed, Cerrone tried to introduce himself to Diaz when he saw him talking to longtime friend and teammate Leonard Garcia. Diaz slapped his hand away and swore at him before walking off, which didn't exactly make Cerrone hesitant to accept a fight with Diaz when it was offered shortly thereafter, he told reporters at Tuesday's open workouts.

But at Wednesday's press conference, it seemed like even Cerrone had realized that, when it comes to one of the Diaz brothers, stuff like that isn't personal -- it's just how they operate.

"I never met the kid. I went up to shake his hand. I understand where he comes from. He doesn't want to be friends. He doesn't want any kind of interaction with any guys who he fights, and that's just how he approaches his fights. At the time, I didn't realize that. ...Words were exchanged. The fight's signed, and Friday we're going to dance."

Diaz remarked that the incident had been made "into more than it really was," and Cerrone seemed to accept that explanation, saying, "I didn't understand at first, but if that's the way he approaches it. ...If that's what he has to do to get ready to fight, hey, hate me, love me, I don't care. We're fighting."

Maybe they weren't quite on the path to becoming best friends, but at least it was something resembling professional courtesy. Then came the staredown, the muttered comment, and the hat slap. While it might seem like good pre-fight build-up, White is not a fan, he explained later.

"There's going to be times when heated stuff happens," he said. "I'm not happy that Nate slapped Cerrone's hat off today. I don't like the guys touching each other [before the fight]. That's why I'm standing there. I'm not there to mug up into the camera. I'm there to make sure that [expletive] doesn't happen. I didn't do my job today, apparently."

White said he wasn't "overly concerned about it," but the negative appearance created by two fighters laying hands on one another in public days before they're actually supposed to is still "something that I think about, no doubt about it," the UFC president remarked.

Fortunately, this incident amounted to little more than an exciting few seconds in the lobby of the MGM Grand. And after all, it's not like they won't get a chance to settle their differences very soon, White pointed out, and in a fashion they both understand.

"Everybody knows how nasty the Diaz brothers are," said White. "But Donald Cerrone's not the nicest guy in the world either, you know what I mean?"

How Will Donald Cerrone Respond to 'Maniac' Nate Diaz? Even He Isn't Sure

Filed under:

Donald CerroneLAS VEGAS -- By now you've probably heard about the run-in Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone had well before their fight at UFC 141 was ever agreed to, but if you haven't, here's the short version: Cerrone saw Diaz talking with his best friend and training partner Leonard Garcia one day in the Ultimate Fighter gym, so he figured he'd go up and say hello.

"I see Leonard talking to him and I'm like, maybe he's a cool dude," Cerrone told reporters on Tuesday. "I never met him before."

Cerrone introduced himself and offered his hand, which Diaz slapped away with a muttering curse or two, then walked off. Again, both men agree they hadn't encountered one another before this moment, and neither had given the other a specific reason to dislike the other. So what gives?

Allow Diaz to explain it in the form of a helpful hypothetical.

"Let's just say for a second you're fighting some maniac from the street who's killed 20 people and they're just like crazy as hell, but you get a fair fight with him," Diaz said on Tuesday. "And he's just like, biting his arm off and talking crazy [expletive]. And then, you're going to fight this nice guy who goes to church and comes up and [says], 'Hey, nice to meet you, it's going to be a good fight.' Who are you going to feel more comfortable fighting?"

And before you ask, yes, Diaz does realize that, at least in this imagined scenario, he's the babbling, murderous maniac. But still, you have to admit that he kind of has a point.

For years Diaz has bristled at any attempt by the UFC, which he sees as intentional, to put him in contact with people he may fight at some point. From overlapping open workout schedules that force him to catch a glimpse of other fighters, to rides to and from the airport, everywhere Diaz looks he sees this subtle brand of sabotage. Why it seems to bother him so much more than other fighters is a question for another day, but you have to admit that he's come up with an effective way of shutting down any camaraderie before it starts.

By maintaining open hostility toward all potential opponents, Diaz said he prevents other fighters from feeling comfortable around him, which is true. From lightweights to welterweights (and probably a few guys both higher and lower on the scale), very few UFC fighters would tell you that being around either of the Diaz brothers is a comfortable experience.

The way Diaz sees it is pretty simple: "You stay on your side, I'll stay on my side."

Fortunately for him -- or perhaps unfortunately, depending on how you think about it -- Cerrone is just fine with that philosophy.

"Whatever he has to do in his mind to justify his fighting tactics, that's what he does," Cerrone said. "I don't care. I could fight Leonard, you know. That's my best friend, we'll go in there and get paid. That's what we do for a living. So what he has to do to get ready, whether that's talk [expletive] or not [be] friends with people, I understand where he's coming from."

The question for Cerrone is, what do you do with that? While "Cowboy" said he was expecting plenty of expletives and middle fingers when he gets in the cage with Diaz, he admitted he wasn't entirely sure how he'd react to it. After all, he's not exactly the wholesome choir boy from Diaz's hypothetical. Will it help him to give the vitriol right back to Diaz, or would that be playing right into his opponent's hands?

"And that is what I'm working on," Cerrone said. "I don't know. Do I get mad at him? Do I use what he's been doing all week, slapping my hand, against [him]? I've got to figure that out."

The failed introduction was still fresh in Cerrone's mind when he was offered a fight with Diaz, he said. He hadn't yet returned to his locker room when a UFC official mentioned Diaz's name as a possible next opponent, and his reaction was immediate: "Cool, let's go."

Only now that the simmering hostilities are about to give way to the sanctioned brutality they both get paid for, what is Cerrone supposed to do about Diaz's unique approach to relationships with colleagues? Even if you don't want to be the guy's friend, does that mean you have to give him what he wants and be his enemy? Is it smart? Is it helpful?

At that, even "Cowboy" shrugged.

"I do not have an answer for it yet," he said.

Maybe it's the kind of thing you have to find out for yourself on fight night. Maybe once it starts, how you react to it isn't even entirely up to you.

Ludwig awarded UFC?s fastest KO by UFC, not NSAC

It looks like Duane ?Bang? Ludwig will no longer have to ask for signatures of random losers on Facebook so that his knockout of Jonathan Goulet almost six years ago can be recognized as the UFC?s fastest ever. The adulation-hungry Ludwig was informed on Saturday via the post-Myspace home of Internet attention whoring, Twitter, that the UFC is changing the official time of his 2006 fight to four seconds. This means that we all have newfound respect for him as a ninja and love him with every part of our bodies, especially our peepees. According to BleacherReport, Ludwig was thrilled that he is now THE MAN:

?One of my students, Blake, actually texted me on Christmas Eve saying, ?Congrats,?? Ludwig, 33, recently explained to Bleacher Report. ?I said, ?Thank you, but congrats on what?? Blake texted back, saying that Mr. Dana White tweeted me saying, ?For (Christmas), you have the fastest KO in UFC history and it will be changed ASAP.?

?I said, ?Thank you,? pulled up Twitter and (saw) Mr. White's tweet and was so happy. I screamed, ?F yeah!? pretty loud and tweeted Mr. White back, saying, ?Thank you!? I started texting a few people like my wife, Bas Rutten, my manager, Sven Bean and a few others. I replied to a few tweets and was just so happy.?

Unfortunately for Ludwig, his goal of being universally worshiped will not be completely realized, as the NSAC has concluded after lengthy consultations with its lawyers that the four seconds of the Ludwig-Goulet fight is REQUIRED to carry the legal name ?11 seconds? from now until the apocalypse. Yes, that?s right, America has strayed so far from its ?Land of the Free? moniker that even time itself is imprisoned by the the red tape of government bureaucracy. That?s it, I?m off to join Jeff Monson.

Ludwig would also probably prefer to ignore the fact that an officially-recognized two-second knockout happened when Ryohei Masuda met Takahiro Kuroishi in a 2008 RINGS fight. But whatever. Duane is such a ninja that we probably can?t even see his tears fall before they run off to slash someone?s throat somewhere. The Ludwig-Goulet fight can be seen here.

As He Reflects on Loss to Michael Bisping, 'Mayhem' Miller Focuses on Uncertain Future

Filed under:

Mayhem MillerThere's at least one thing Jason "Mayhem" Miller can feel good about when he looks back on his TKO loss to Michael Bisping in Las Vegas on December 3.

"I went out there and took my ass-whipping like a man," he told MMA Fighting. "I wore it like an Armani suit. I thought, I might have nothing left, but I'm going to go out here and try. I'm going to swing for the fences. And I did, but I came up short. That's the harsh reality of ultimate fighting."

It's also a shallow consolation, especially for a man who waited years to get this chance again, only to watch it turn sour on live TV.

There's no other way to put it: Miller looked awful. He knew it. The story was written all over his bloody, lumped up face when the bout ended in the third. Even if he'd managed to miss it somehow, his boss -- UFC president Dana White -- was there to remind him, calling it one of the most one-sided fights in UFC history, and hinting that Miller might get cut because of it. This prompted immediate protest from Miller's army of fans on Twitter, but it came as less of a surprise to Miller himself.

"That's his job," Miller said of White. "He has a bottom line to defend. If I was in his position, I'd be doing the same thing. ...That's just part of the damn game, right? If you don't show up, physically and mentally, then you get beat. And I got beat."

But why he got beat -- and why he looked so bad in the process -- is another question altogether. In a blog for his website, Miller alluded to mistakes made in training as well as in the cage -- mistakes he declined to elaborate on because, as he put it, "no one wants to hear my excuses."

After seeing how quickly Miller deteriorated in the cage, however, it's hard not to think that maybe he was more affected than he thought he'd be by the pressure of returning to the UFC for the first time since his 2005 loss to current welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.

"I'll admit that," Miller said. "It felt weird walking out there. I didn't feel like my normal self, and it really showed. I couldn't get relaxed, couldn't perform to my potential. And I'm not taking anything from Bisping, but it was definitely not my best performance."

It also didn't help that, by the time he fought Bisping, Miller had been out of action for over a year. Though he insisted before the bout that ring rust wouldn't have any effect on a veteran fighter like himself, he found out otherwise in a hurry, he said.

"I didn't think that that layoff would do anything to me. But man, it was apparent that it did. I kind of freaked out in there. I've got to admit it."

After taking Bisping down and controlling him against the fence for much of the first round, Miller knew he was in trouble when he sat down on the stool between rounds and felt an unfamiliar sensation.

"I usually sit down on the [stool] and get a burst of energy back. But man, I sat down and I was sucking wind. I didn't feel like myself. I was like, man, what's going on with me here? I just couldn't get back refocused. In the training room, I did it just fine. But inside the Octagon, I didn't come back like I do. I was going, where am I? Usually, by the end of the 60 seconds I'm recharged. I wasn't recharged at all. I was more tired than when I sat down."

That's a bad feeling, especially when you're just beginning the second round of a five-round fight, and your opponent looks as fresh as when he walked out. Miller knew right then that he didn't have much left in the tank, but he spent the next eight-plus minutes trying to make the best of what he did have, and taking a beating for his efforts.

At one point, he even put his hands at his sides and let Bisping pepper him with shots -- a decision he regretted more for the pure stupidity of it than the physical effects.

"Genetically, I've been blessed with a hard-ass head," he said. "I didn't feel bad at all. I was just so tired that, by the time they stopped that fight, I was like, yeah, that makes sense. That was a good stop. I wasn't doing anything. It sucks to lose, but I was the one who was in control of that."

That's what makes this part -- the part that comes after a poor performance that left the boss unimpressed, to say the least -- so difficult. The fight might have been up to Miller, but the fallout isn't. Now he has to wait to find out what the UFC will decide to do with him, and so far the quiet on the other end of the line has been a little unsettling.

He hasn't heard from White since the UFC president asked him "what kind of car I was getting" for his TUF coaching gig, Miller said. And no one at the UFC has told him when he might get another fight or, if no such fight is in his future, get his walking papers. It's a disturbing bit of deja vu for a man who spent a year of his prime in limbo, waiting for Strikeforce to decide what to do with him. But then, it's not as if he has a lot of other options.

"It's their playground," he said. "If they don't want me in it, what choice do I have?"

For now, Miller said, he's trying not to dwell on all the worst-case scenarios and the negative what-ifs, just like he's trying not to beat himself up any more than he needs to over how terribly the Bisping fight went. Now that it's over, he said, the best he can hope for is a chance to fix his mistakes in the next fight. Whether he'll get that chance remains to be seen.
