Post-Fight Thoughts After UFC on FOX 2

Filed under:

The sky is not falling.

The doomsdayers always seem to panic whenever a UFC show does not produce a series of heart-racing moments, and UFC on FOX 2 certainly fell a little flat, leading to heavy criticism and downright concern about the future of the FOX deal.

Relax. FOX is well aware that some fights are going to blow you away, and others will make you want to walk away. That's sports. They didn't lock in a seven-year deal with the thought of divorcing after their first official show under the terms of the deal. This is still a new sports property for them, and there is plenty of room to grow for both sides.

Adjustments will be made, and fights will deliver.

Remember, we have Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller on tap for UFC on FOX 3 in May. There's no way that fight doesn't deliver.

Until then, here are my thoughts on storylines stemming from the UFC's second outing on network TV...

Historic Run
Jon Jones had a banner 2011, capturing the title and finishing all four of his fights. The virtuoso performance led many to wonder what he could possibly do for an encore, and now we have our answer. Jones has Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson waiting to fight him.

Think about this: Jones has the possibility of going through Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Evans and Henderson consecutively. If he accomplishes it, it would no doubt be the most impressive five-fight run in MMA history.

And let it be said, giving Evans the first shot at Jones before Henderson is the right call. Evans has been the No. 1 contender in waiting for about 18 months, since beating Jackson back in May 2010. He's waited long enough. Even though Henderson is 41 years old and has less time remaining in his career than Evans, he wasn't even in the UFC when Evans became the top contender. He was still in Strikeforce at the time.

Henderson should certainly get the chance to fight the Evans-Jones winner, but given the UFC schedule, he'll likely be offered another fight before it.

Stepping Back
It's safe to say that Phil Davis wasn't quite ready for the jump up to elite opponent level, struggling in a decision loss to Evans. Davis remains a wildly gifted talent, but seems to lack conviction in some of his own abilities. He didn't fully commit to his punches, often moving backward as he threw, and that allowed Evans to fire off his own strikes with little to fear.

Davis does throw strong kicks, but until he learns to let his hands go -- a skill that will complement his wrestling -- he won't reach his optimum potential.

Sonnen-Silva II
Chael Sonnen had some trouble with Michael Bisping on the way to a unanimous decision that will set up a rematch with Anderson Silva, likely this summer in Brazil. The less-than-stellar performance sent his stock downward in the eyes of many, who suggest that it will somehow carry over into his fight with Silva.

There's no correlation between the two fights. Bisping has always boasted very good takedown defense and even when he's gotten taken down, he tends to pop back up to his feet quickly. Silva's takedown defense is average, and when he gets taken down, he looks for submissions instead of trying to get to his feet. Sonnen is much more likely to take him down and keep him down for long stretches, just like the first fight, mainly because Silva is often content to work from his back, where he's dangerous.

That said, the rematch -- like the original -- is likely to come down to whether Sonnen can stay away from a fight-ending submission.

MiddleMan
For a long time, I have asked, where is the next great middleweight? In a story from last year, I suggested Chris Weidman could be that man.

On Saturday, Weidman defeated Maia in a workmanlike decision. While he didn't steal the headlines away from Evans or Sonnen, Weidman's win on 11 days' notice sends the message that he's a force to be reckoned with. He had to cut from 217 to 185. He was faced with fighting a southpaw. His opponent was one of MMA's submission masters. Weidman conquered all these obstacles in his path, and that says plenty about his mental and physical makeup.

Weidman has shown advancing striking skills to go with his excellent wrestling and ground game. Barring an injury, there's no question that he'll be knocking on the door of top contenders in the division ASAP.

Another first
Charles Oliveira made his featherweight debut memorable, becoming the first UFC fighter in history to score a calf slicer submission. Oliveira is an aggressive, attacking offensive fighter, so it's no surprise that he'd pull off something so bold and rare. Now it's worth watching to see if he becomes a real factor in the division.

Damned if you do...
Nik Lentz used to receive a ton of criticism for fighting conservatively, but the approach led to a 15-fight unbeaten stretch from 2007-2011. The constant slams from fans and media caused Lentz to reconsider his approach, and his more wide open style has led to two losses in a row. The upside: he earned a $65,000 bonus for Fight of the Night. The downside: he's now officially on the cut watch list.

Rashad Evans Beats Phil Davis in UFC on Fox 2 Main Event

Rashad Evans defeated Phil Davis at UFC on FOX 2 on Saturday night in Chicago.CHICAGO -- Rashad Evans out-slugged Phil Davis for 25 minutes to win a unanimous decision in the main event of Saturday night's UFC on Fox 2 show.

With the win, Evans will earn a UFC light heavyweight title shot against Jon Jones, and Evans said afterward that he is uninjured and will be ready for that fight in April.

The fight wasn't the kind of barn-burner that the UFC and Fox were surely hoping for, and many in the crowd at the United Center booed as the event drew to a close. But it was the win Evans needed to get another crack at the title. All three judges gave all five rounds to Evans.

"I fought at a pretty high pace but I felt like I wanted to put it away and just didn't get the chance," Evans said. "I'm kind of disappointed by that."

Evans said the fight with Jones is the fight he's focused on.

"It was hard to focus on this fight because everybody kept talking about that fight," Evans said. "Now I get an opportunity to fight Jon and I'm very excited about that."

Davis said at the post-fight press conference that he was disappointed he failed in the biggest fight of his career.

"He's a good fighter," Davis said of Evans. "I just couldn't score the points I needed to in the clutch positions."

Davis employed some powerful leg kicks in the early going and seemed to be using his reach to get the better of the stand-up exchanges. However, with a little over a minute to go in the round, Evans took Davis down and then transitioned into side control, where he battered Davis's head on the ground. That was enough to win the first round for Evans.

The second round was slow most of the way until, with only 30 seconds left, Davis threw a kick that Evans caught, and Evans once again took Davis down and got into side control. Evans didn't do as much on the ground at the end of the second as he had at the end of the first, but given how little action there was before that, it was probably enough for Evans to win the round again.

Early in the third Davis attempted a takedown, but Evans sprawled and managed to end up on top of Davis, and even briefly took his back before they stood back up. Evans then got the better of an exchange of punches, and although Davis was finally able to get Evans back down after that, he couldn't do anything on the ground, and Evans won yet another round.

Davis landed a hard body kick that made a sound like the crack of a bat early in the fourth round, but there wasn't much significant striking in the round after that. Both Evans and Davis were tiring out and not getting much done as the fourth went on.

Early in the fifth Davis threw a kick that Evans caught with one hand while hitting Davis with the other, and he knocked Davis down and got on top of him. Evans played it safe for the rest of the round, knowing he had won. And knowing he's got Jones next.

The wrong Dana White

Remember that DOXing of Dana White's personal information that hackers performed on Thursday night? Well, some of that info wasn't quite correct - including home address and phone number details. Some random lady in Las Vegas has now received over 500 phone calls. What caused the error by these l33t h4x0rs?

In the report, FOX 5 reporter Matt Delucia suggests the UFC boss' name became associated with Breeler's address thanks to a past resident of the house who owned a white cat named "Dana," and used the pseudonym as a way to detect junk mail.

Admit you're guilty or never fight for the UFC again

I'm a total sucker for a good steroid excuse so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask, but I thought King Mo Lawal's excuse was pretty decent. Not only did he find the specific over the counter supplement he was taking that caused the positive test, but he's also taking the commission punishment on the chin without complaint. Well, his manager has suggested they may go after the supplement company, but that's a whole other ball of wax.

That may not be good enough to get back into the good graces of UFC prez Dana White, though. We're not the only ones who have noticed that everyone who pops for steroids denies knowingly taking steroids. It's enough to make you start thinking that drug testing is a farce, so...

?If you get caught doing something, admit you did it,? White told ESPN.com. ?This whole, ?somebody put something in my system that I didn?t know about.? ... Who here lets somebody put s--- in them that you don?t know about?

?I don?t buy that s---. Own up to what you did. Everybody makes mistakes.?

White went on to say that Lawal or any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing drug and fails to admit the error of his ways risks never again fighting in a Zuffa-promoted event.

So what does the future hold for Lawal or former Strikeforce women?s featherweight titleholder Cristaine Santos, who also recently tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug earlier this month?

?I don?t know,? White said. ?It depends on how they handle themselves. We will see.?

This all seems to be part of the UFC's recent plan to appear tough on steroids before a major scandal hits the fan. This is the silver lining in having a troll like the Culinary Union hanging around waiting for something to go awry - it keeps the UFC on their toes and proactively moving forward ahead of potentially damaging stories.

It is kinda creepy though how accused athletes must bow down, kiss the ring, and confess their sins if they want to continue their career in the UFC. Especially if you believe like I do that the real cheats are so far ahead of commission testing that it's only the innocents slipping up and accidentally injesting bodybuilder crap that are getting caught.

After Mulling Retirement, Matt Hughes Hopes to Fight Again in UFC

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes is expecting to meet with UFC president Dana White and make his case for at least one more fight in the UFC.

During a Saturday night interview on FUEL TV, Hughes said that while his wife wants him to retire, he has the itch to return to the octagon. Hughes (45-9) has lost each of his last two fights by knockout.

"I think Dana could be the final decision maker," he said. "My wife's a great lady, but she's not going to tell me when Matt Hughes retires."

Hughes fought just once in 2011, getting KO'd in the last second of the first round of a UFC 135 bout against Josh Koscheck. Prior to that, he suffered another knockout, this one to BJ Penn in just 21 seconds in November 2010. After each of those defeats, he has publicly mulled the possibility of retirement.

Overall, Hughes is just 3-4 in his last seven fights.

The UFC Hall of Famer had one of the most dominant stretches in UFC history during the early-to-mid 2000s, boasting a 19-1 stretch at one point before losing the welterweight title to Georges St-Pierre.

But despite his status as a legend of the sport, Hughes seems to believe it's no sure thing he'll be welcomed back. Asked who he might want to fight upon his return, he said his fate is in Dana White's hands.

"I'm just hoping I can fight next," he said. "We'll see what happens. I'm not scouting anybody out. I'm just hoping the opportunity is here for me now."

Who to watch for on the UFC on FOX 2 prelims

Saturday's card is called the tripleheader because we're supposed to be chuffed that we're seeing three fights on one show. Oh la de da, a whole two less than normal? Exciting! The good news is the UFC has learned it's lesson after the first FOX show featured 59 minutes of talking and 1 minute of fighting. If the main card fights go fast, they will jam an undercard fight or two onto the show. This is especially cool because there's some awesome talent tucked away in the prelims. Checkit:

Evan Dunham - Van Ham. Dunny Boy. The Dun-meister. Maybe if Evan Dunham had one of these totally bitchin' nicknames it'd be easy to remember how great he is. Alas, a totally bogus loss to Sean Sherk and a quick KO from Melvin Guillard has dropped him out of the contender's pack and many fans' memories. Powerful striking, excellent wrestling, and a tricky submission game will get him back in there.

Charles Oliveira - The UFC is a crucible of competition, and if you need proof just look at Charles Oliveira's 0-2-1 record over the past two years. After a starting streak saw him go 14-0, he dropped quick losses to Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone and blew a one-sided win over Nik Lentz when he hit the guy with an illegal knee. What Charles lacks in wrestling and boxing he makes up for in jiu jitsu and crazy kicks. In another year or two, he could be competing for a belt. For now, he's being built back up against Strikeforce Challengers import Eric Wisely.

George Roop - I've always liked George Roop. I lump him into the same group as Joe Lauzon and Cole Miller: lanky dudes with bad intentions who aren't about to roll over for anyone. Roop's record over the past few years looks more checkered than Crocop's shorts, but it's hard to ignore his recent success against Josh Grispi and Hatsu Hioki. Hioki came in ranked #2 on many people's featherweight lists and Roop took the fight to him. The judges messed up and gave the fight to Hioki but that doesn't mean we shouldn't acknowledge Roop's performance.

John Olav Einemo - I'm not about to call Einemo the next big thing at HW. But in a division where the lower rung heavyweights often put on plodding wars of attrition, John has shown he's not afraid to stand and bang. Which is somewhat surprising since he's famous for his jiujitsu. Win or lose, if he throws out another performance like he did against Dave 'Pee Wee' Herman, I'm a fan.

The UFC on FOX 2 prelims can be watched on FUEL TV this Saturday starting at 5PM EST. As always, we'll have the chat up so drop in and join in on the fun.

Alistair Overeem releases official non-statement

After weeks of dodging questions relating to his lawsuit against former camp Golden Glory and nearly having his Brock Lesnar money seized, Alistair Overeem is finally making an official statement regarding the situation.

This is Alistair Overeem's first formal public comment on his ongoing litigation with Golden Glory. He has avoided comment up to now for many reasons. First, Alistair believes that the split between himself and Golden Glory should be kept between the parties. Although he has been tempted to expose ongoing problems with Golden Glory's business, its poor relationship with some of its remaining fighters, and the deep betrayal he has experienced in recent years, he has chosen not to air the specifics of those facts.

Second, Alistair was singularly focused on his fight with Brock Lesnar. Third, Alistair does not want to disrupt Golden Glory's ongoing business operations. Fourth, Alistair believes that commenting on the litigation lacks professionalism. Golden Glory continues to take action by press release, through public comment and in the litigation in an apparent attempt to derail Alistair's career. Now that Alistair has defeated Brock Lesnar, he feels compelled to speak up. You will hear from Alistair on many of these topics directly.

We can say that Alistair and his legal team are very confident in the legal positions he has taken or will take in the California and Nevada litigation. Alistair is looking forward to having a judge or jury determine the merits of his position in this litigation. Although overtures regarding resolution of the lawsuits have been made by Golden Glory, Alistair believes it is important to see this matter to conclusion, not just for himself, but for other Golden Glory fighters, the UFC and its fans.

Not much new here. Mysterious mentions of 'deep betrayal' are mysterious. And I'm not sure I understand if Alistair is going to speak 'on many of these topics directly' now or if he's sticking to keeping things 'between himself and Golden Glory.' It's not really clear. The meat of the release is basically "Golden Glory are being unprofessional meanies so we might do that too." Was this written by the same doofus that messed up Overeem's Nevada drug testing? Sometimes it seems like the only competent person helping Alistair is the dude filming and editing THE REEM.

Golden Glory isn't spending all it's energy trying to get at Alistair Overeem's money. They're also trying to resurrect kickboxing from the smoldering ashes of K-1 in Japan. To do that they've sorted out a strange deal where they pay off K-1's bad debts to fighters in exchange for their contracts. The goal is to sever all K-1 ties so things can be started up again with all the major kickboxers in one organization. This ain't cheap, and while GG has teamed up with some asian sports organization, I'm sure getting their hands on 30% of everything Overeem is making wouldn't hurt.
