Another look at that Anderson Silva doc

Oh look, a new preview for the Anderson Silva documentary 'Like Water.' I gotta say this preview is way better than the first one, which was focused around some strange Brazilian proverb about a frozen bird being shit on by a cow. This one is nearly all Chael Sonnen - the guy's in the movie so much he's got third billing after Anderson Silva and Dana White. The documentary covers the time between the turd Andy laid in Abu Dhabi and the Sonnen fight. Maybe now I'm starting to get why Silva is being such a primadonna about fighting Chael again. When you've already got your victory over the American douchebag captured in a perfect movie moment, it makes a rematch slightly less interesting.

Bears sign LB Gibson to practice squad

The Bears made an addition to their practice squad Wednesday, signing LB Thaddeus Gibson.

Gibson, a second-year veteran, appeared in two games with the 49ers last season and recorded two tackles. A fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2010, Gibson spent part of the preseason and regular season this year with the 49ers, Redskins and Texans but has not played in a game.

Vikings-Broncos matchup of the day: Wednesday

Here's a key matchup to watch in Sunday's Vikings-Broncos game.

Vikings cornerbacks vs. Broncos WR Eric Decker

Even though the Broncos run a rudimentary passing game with Tim Tebow at the helm, they still find ways to sneak Decker deep and come up with explosive plays.

In the game against the Chiefs in Week 10, when the Broncos attempted eight passes and only completed two of them, Decker got behind the defense to catch a 56-yard touchdown pass to clinch the victory.

Decker has done a good job of adjusting to the new, run-heavy offense and a drastically less accurate quarterback to continue producing. He has ideal size at 6-3, 218 pounds and has good speed.

The Vikings' corners have to do a better job of preventing the big play and force Tebow to work the ball methodically down the field with his arm and expose his lack of accuracy. Asher Allen, Cedric Griffin and Benny Sapp all had their struggles last week against the Falcons and need to step up their performances.

The goal has to be to prevent the big play down the field.

Readers split on possibility of Packers finishing regular season unbeaten

Respondents to a PFW web poll asking, "Will the 11-0 Packers go undefeated in the regular season?" were split down the middle in their belief whether it will happen or not, with both answers garnering 50 percent of the vote.

The defending-champion Packers next play a Giants team that is reeling after a 49-24 shellacking in New Orleans Monday night at MetLife Stadium Sunday. They then play host to the AFC West-leading Raiders in Week 14 and at struggling Kansas City before wrapping up the regular-season slate with back-to-back NFC North division home games against Chicago and Detroit.

Giants place OLT Beatty on injured reserve

The Giants announced Wednesday that they have placed OLT Will Beatty on injured reserve because of a detached retina. He will be replaced on the roster by OLB Chase Blackburn.

Beatty had surgery to repair his eye last week. Prior to the injury, Beatty, in his third season from Connecticut, had started 10 games at left tackle this season.

Blackburn was with the Giants from 2005-10, starting 17 games and recording 210 tackles and 1½ sacks.

The Giants also added WR-KR Isaiah Stanback to the practice squad and released QB Ryan Perrilloux. A 2007 fourth-round pick by the Cowboys, Stanback has five career receptions for 46 yards.

The way we see it

Beatty quietly had been the Giants' best offensive lineman this season, so losing him for the rest of the season is a big blow for a team fighting for its playoff life.

Expect David Diehl to continue to play left tackle, with Kevin Boothe playing left guard.

Chris Leben now 0-2 vs international drug testing

When Chris Leben showed up for work in England looking all jacked up and red like a reindeer's dick (yes, we've officially kicked off the xmas-flavored penis joke season), many made jokes about the last time Leben fought in the UK. That was against Michael Bisping in 2008 and not only did Leben not put his fist through Bisping's face ... he didn't pass his drug test either.

Stanozolol was the culprit last time and we can laugh about that one because hey steroids are kinda funny with the bitch tits and shrunken balls and all that. Stanozolol even has the LOL right there in the name! But now Chris Leben has failed yet another drug test in Britain, and this time it's for oxycodone and oxymorphone. Usually when you've got guys failing drug tests for painkillers, that's a sign of opiate addiction. LOL? Not so much.

So say goodbye to Chris Leben, who is now serving a one year suspension from the UFC. Let's hope he takes the year to soak up some sun in Hawaii, drink out of a coconut or three, and get that oxy issue taken care of. Painkillers have fucked up the careers of a lot of fighters. Let's hope they don't screw Chris's up any more than they already have.

Vikings 60-second rant: Three areas needing improvement

The Vikings have major holes across their roster and they have been exposed all season. But there are three areas in particular that the franchise needs to improve if it wants to return to the prominence of their 2009 NFC championship game run.

Offensive line: This is the group that needs the most work. Only C John Sullivan has played well enough this season to warrant a return gig in 2012. While he doesn't have ideal strength, he has shown good athleticism in getting to the second level. However, the other four linemen — OLT Charlie Johnson, OLG Steve Hutchinson, ORG Anthony Herrera and ORT Phil Loadholt — have not played at a high level. Johnson just isn't a starting-caliber NFL tackle, and Loadholt lacks the consistency to be counted on throughout a season. Age has caught up to Hutchinson, as he no longer dominates a game like he once could, and Herrera has struggled through the season, as well. With 80 percent of the line needing reworking, finding linemen should be the top priority this offseason.

Cornerback: Anyone who has watched Benny Sapp, Asher Allen and Cedric Griffin attempt to cover over the last few weeks knows that corner is a major need for the team. The team's top two corners, Chris Cook and Antoine Winfield, have uncertain futures with the team moving forward. But given the growth of the passing game, having multiple corners who can play man and zone coverages is necessary. Corner is a very difficult position to evaluate well, but to compete in a division that has Matthew Stafford, Jay Cutler and some guy named Rodgers, getting quality corners is imperative.

Wide receiver: Percy Harvin is a keeper despite his injury history and showed as much with his great effort in Sunday's loss to the Falcons. But the other three receivers — Michael Jenkins, Devin Aromashodu and Greg Camarillo — shouldn't have much of a future with the team. None of those three receivers has the natural talent to help ease QB Christian Ponder's development by making the tough catches in traffic or separating adequately from man coverage. The Vikings need a legitimate deep threat, as well as a big, physical possession receiver to work the intermediate routes and keep the chains moving.

John Olav Einemo Back in UFC, Likely to Face Mike Russow at UFC on FOX 2

Shortly after losing in his UFC debut in a bout that won Fight of the Night at UFC 131, John Olav Einemo was surprisingly cut from the UFC. As it turned out, Einemo was part of the fallout from an ongoing business issue between his Golden Glory management team and the UFC.

Now, it appears a resolution has been struck, as Einemo is back with the promotion and will take on Mike Russow as part of the upcoming UFC on FOX 2 card on January 28, MMA Fighting has learned.

Sources confirmed that both sides have verbally agreed to the bout.

Einemo (6-2) faced Dave Herman at UFC 131, and engaged in a hard-fought battle before falling in a second-round TKO. The fight had been his first MMA bout in over four years. But even after the spirited scrap, he was one of several Golden Glory fighters -- including Alistair Overeem and Marloes Coenen to be dropped by Zuffa.

UFC president Dana White later said the issue stemmed from Golden Glory's management practice of having promoters pay them directly instead of the fighters.

"We don't work that way," White said then. "It's not the way we do business. It's not how it works in the United States with the athletic commissions. You don't pay the managers and the managers pay the fighters. You pay the fighters and the fighters pay the managers."

It remains unclear how the issue was resolved, and whether Einemo -- like Overeem -- parted ways with Golden Glory or found a way to work within the UFC framework.

Meanwhile, Russow (14-1, 1 no contest) will be hoping to extend his impressive 10-fight win streak. In his most recent fight, Russow stopped Jon Madsen by TKO in the second round of their March 2011 encounter.

UFC on FOX 2 will take place from the United Center in Chicago. Four fights are expected to air on the network television broadcast, but the UFC has so far been mum on matchups.

Packers-Giants matchup of the day: Tuesday

Packers CBs Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams and Sam Shields vs. Giants WRs Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham

If QB Eli Manning can get the Giants' passing game on "Cruz Control" early in the game, the Packers could be in for a long afternoon. Cruz, who has really blossomed in his second season in the pros, will pose a real challenge for the Packer corners, particularly Williams, who couldn't have been more up to the challenge of keeping Lions superstar WR Calvin Johnson in check in Green Bay's last outing ("Megatron" had only four catches on eight targets for 49 yards and a meaningless TD with time about to expire).

Cruz, who has speed to burn and is good at handling press coverage, is red-hot at the moment. In the Giants' Monday-night loss to the Saints, he registered his fourth 100-yard receiving outing of the season and second straight, catching nine passes (on 12 targets) for 157 yards and two TDs, including a 72-yard score that Woodson and Williams will probably rerun numerous times in the film room this week.

A key factor for the Giants is the status of Manningham, who could provide a big-play boost in a game that has the potential to turn into a wild-and-woolly shootout. Manningham, who had an 85-yard TD catch against the Packers in Week 16 last year, did not play on Monday night (knee) and will probably be listed as questionable for the game this Sunday.

Nicks, who emerged as Manning's major target last season despite missing three games, is still considered the Giants' No. 1 receiver over Cruz despite his more modest numbers this season. He had seven catches for 87 yards against the Saints Monday night, his best effort since a 4-96 performance in Week Six, and showed some toughness when he stayed in the game after absorbing a wicked hit from Saints rookie S Isa Abdul-Quddus.

In the Packers' rout of the Giants in Week 16 last season, Woodson, Williams and Shields each came up with takeaways. Woodson and Shields each had an interception, and Woodson contributed a forced fumble.

Woodson has given up a lot of big plays this season, but he still makes more good plays than bad and continues to have a knack for clutch takeaways, as evidenced by his sixth interception of the year against the Lions, which enabled him to triple his 2010 pick total.

Bears elevate Trahan, waive Iwuh

The Bears waived/injured LB Brian Iwuh on Tuesday and promoted LB Patrick Trahan from the practice squad to take Iwuh's spot on the 53-man roster.

Iwuh, who leads the team in special-teams tackles with 14, suffered a hamstring injury in the Bears' loss to the Raiders on Sunday. He will revert to the team's injured reserve list when he clears waivers and an injury settlement could follow.

A sixth-year veteran, Iwuh appeared in 27 games since joining the Bears before last season and was credited with 32 tackles.

Trahan has spent the last two seasons on the practice squads of the Bears and Titans after entering the league as an undrafted free agent.

The way we see it

The Bears could miss Iwuh on special teams, and he was a decent backup at a position where the Bears don't have great depth.

Ravens-Browns matchup of the day: Tuesday

Here's a matchup to watch in Sunday's Ravens-Browns game.

Ravens WRs Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin vs. Browns CBs Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown

Haden, 22, merits Pro Bowl consideration. He has defended 16 passes, and he has proven very difficult to beat in coverage. Haden closes quickly and really does well on short and intermediate routes. If he's in close coverage on these types of throws, and the ball is thrown where he can make a play on it, he is very adept at getting a hand in and knocking it away.

However, Haden did give up a pair of long catches to Bengals WR A.J. Green on Sunday. Both times, Green used his size and leaping ability to snatch the ball out of midair. Green's final catch of the game — a 51-yarder that set up the eventual game-winning field goal — was utterly highlight-reel. There was nothing Haden could have done, given where the ball was thrown and how Green leaped to catch it with Haden in a trail position.

Any matchups pitting Smith and Haden should be fun to watch. Smith, a rookie from Maryland, has exceptional speed and can probably beat Haden vertically. However, on shorter throws, the more experienced Haden — an outstanding athlete in his own right, mind you — probably has the advantage. Haden should also match up well with the physical Boldin on shorter routes, too. Boldin burned then-Browns CB Eric Wright for three touchdowns in the first meeting with Cleveland last season, but he had just two catches for 15 yards in the rematch in Cleveland, when Brown and Haden were the starting cornerbacks and Wright was out for the season.

Brown is savvy and physical. He can hold up well on shorter routes. He could struggle if matched up with Smith on vertical routes.

In addition to the Browns' coverage from the cornerbacks, the Browns' safeties will be key to limiting Smith's big-play opportunties.

Senator: Vikings should talk Minneapolis stadium

By PATRICK CONDON
Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings executives should help Minneapolis leaders narrow three possible downtown football stadium sites in the city to one, despite the team's desire to build at an entirely different site in a suburb north of St. Paul, an influential state senator said Tuesday.

At a joint hearing of two state Senate Committees, Vikings and Ramsey County leaders touted their plan to put a $1.1 billion stadium on a former Army ammunition plant in Arden Hills. The mayor and city council president of Minneapolis moved to keep the largely public-financed stadium in their downtown with promises of cheaper construction costs and an existing local sales tax to help pay them.

The decision of whether, and where, to build a new stadium will ultimately fall to state lawmakers themselves.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said city leaders prefer the proposal to build at the site of the Metrodome, where the team currently plays, but that it's been difficult to choose between that and two proposals on the other side of downtown because Vikings officials won't meet with city leaders or select one of the three Minneapolis sites.

"The Vikings have chosen, and that's their choice to back only the Arden Hills site," Rybak said. "We would like to go back to the table with them."

That prompted Sen. Julianne Ortman, chairwoman of the Senate Taxes Committee, to encourage Vikings executives to sit down with Minneapolis stadium boosters. "I for one think it's in your best interest to help us narrow down these sites," said Ortman, a Republican from Chanhassen.

Lester Bagley, a Vikings vice president, said they would do so. But he stressed again that team owners Zygi and Mark Wilf are interested in what they see as a greater "fan experience" offered by the 430-acre Arden Hills site — room for team practice facilities, adjacent parking and tailgating and plenty of adjacent space for related retail, hotel and restaurant development.

"We worked hard to find a local partner, as we were instructed to do," Bagley said of the team's agreement with Ramsey County. "We think it's important we stick with a local partner that sticks with us."

The three Minneapolis proposals each offer a cheaper total price tag: the plan to build at the current Metrodome site is estimated to cost $895 billion, while the two proposals west of downtown near the Twins' Target Field each weigh in at just over $1 billion. But mitigating those savings is the recent vow by Zygi Wilf that he would contribute less money to a Minneapolis stadium than he would to one in Arden Hills.

LOCK OF THE WEEK

Which of your picks do you feel strongest about and why?

Hub Arkush: The Steelers know these are the kind of games they have to continue to win to guarantee their playoff spot, and they will take advantage of that here.

Keith Schleiden: The Ravens are 3-0 vs. the AFC North and know they are in a battle with the Steelers for the division title. They know what's at stake this week and won't take the Browns lightly.

Mike Holbrook: To quote the Blues Brothers, the Broncos "are on a mission from God," and Tim Tebow and a fierce pass rush once again will produce another close victory.

Dan Arkush: I just can't see the Bears winning any games handily with the mistake-prone Caleb Hanie under center. The Chiefs are talented enough to get within a TD at Soldier Field.

Eric Edholm: The 49ers will be rested mentally and physically with extra time off and will smell blood against a Rams team whose head coach might be in serious jeopardy.

Mike Wilkening: The Jets are a shaky proposition laying more than a field goal against a Washington club still playing hard. The Redskins have played two solid games in a row.

Dan Parr: The Patriots are not the type to show any mercy to a wounded opponent. Good teams blow out the Colts, and the Patriots will become the latest to beat up on Indy.

Kevin Fishbain: As good as the 49ers have been, they haven't blown too many teams out of the water. I think the Rams can score enough points to keep it from getting out of hand.

Eli Kaberon: Drew Brees tends to light up the scoreboard at the Superdome. With the fast and aggressive Saints "D," I doubt the turnover-prone Matthew Stafford can keep up.

Fantasy Ticker: Week 13

There's value in the waiver wire this week, with players like Roy Helu and Santana Moss. There's also quality depth for your roster as you make a playoff run, and a few fliers and watch-list players as well. Right now, many leagues are entering their fantasy playoffs, so be careful when dumping a quality player for what seems like a can't-miss, one-week play. Although it may only be a placekicker, I picked up Jason Hanson, expecting a high-scoring affair on Turkey Day, only to be disappointed with one fantasy point.

QUARTERBACKS

Vince Young, Eagles (23 percent ownership)
Young has a two-game average of 329 yards, 1.5 TDs, with two interceptions and six rush attempts for 22.5 yards and zero TDs. Young isn't using his legs, but he's been passing for more yardage than most expected. The Eagles play Thursday night, so there's a good chance he gets another start as Michael Vick (ribs) may not be ready. If you need a stopgap, he fills that role, but the Seahawks are a much tougher matchup than the Patriots.

QB watch list

Caleb Hanie, Bears (4 percent ownership)
It may be too late to use Hanie, and we're also talking about larger leagues and owners with minimal options. This past week, he threw for 254 yards and two TDs with three interceptions. The team will emphasize the run, but his first game back showed some promise for fantasy owners, if not for the Bears. Hanie may not be a favorite of offensive coordinator Mike Martz, but he knows the playbook. Watch him this week or as long as you can, and if he improves, then go from there.

RUNNING BACKS

Roy Helu, Redskins (47 percent ownership)
Helu (23-108-1 rushing and 7-54-0 receiving) is now the team's starter, per head coach Mike Shanahan. Helu is explosive and a playmaker, but don't expect this type production every week. Regardless, he could be a steal going into the playoffs.

Donald Brown, Colts (12 percent ownership)
Brown (14-80-1 rushing and 1-17-0 receiving) was the No. 2 back this past week despite Joseph Addai starting and sharing time until the second half. Brown has a four-game average of 13.5 attempts for 59 yards and 0.5 TDs per game. Two TDs in the past four games, with an increase in touches, shows promise. His playing time is tied to Addai, but he did outplay Addai and gives you depth going into the playoffs.

Maurice Morris, Lions (36 percent ownership)
Morris (7-39-0 rushing and 9-81-0 receiving) took over after Kevin Smith (ankle) went down and, with his receiving total, had his best game this season. Smith could return in Week 13, but nothing is set, and odds are it'll be a late-week decision, if not game day. Morris is more of a short-term pickup and has a five-game average of 12 touches for 67 yards from scrimmage and 0.2 TDs per game. He is good for an injury fill-in.

Marion Barber, Bears (24 percent ownership)
Barber (10-63-0) should see an increase in carries with QB Jay Cutler (thumb) gone 4-6 weeks. The team will run more, and Barber is averaging 7.8 attempts for 29.6 yards and 0.6 TDs per game. Terrible numbers, but he's the goal-line back with five TDs in eight games. He's only an injury fill-in, but as a TD vulture he can score any game.

C.J. Spiller, Bills (47 percent ownership)
Spiller (19-55-0 rushing and 3-15-0 receiving) was facing the Jets this past week and, considering the low expectations, played well. With Fred Jackson (leg) on injured reserve, Spiller will benefit with the most touches. That's what gives him his value, touches, and with his speed, he could break one. It won't be surprising to see the team using him in various ways to take advantage of the matchups. Spiller is depth as an injury fill-in.

Toby Gerhart, Vikings (27 percent ownership)
Gerhart (17-44-1 rushing and 2-19-0 receiving) — filling in for Adrian Peterson, who has a high ankle sprain — was facing the Falcons, one of the leagues' better run defenses. They limited Gerhart to 2.6 yards per carry, but like Spiller, the hope is that Gerhart sees No. 1-RB touches that provide him enough opportunities to find the endzone. Just as he did last week. He's an injury fill-in until Peterson gets back, and early reports are not positive for A.P.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Santana Moss, Redskins (55 percent ownership)
Moss (4-29-0 on seven targets) did not do anything to help his fantasy owners this past week, but he has missed four games, and the offense has been out of sync. He's the team's No. 1 WR and will see enough targets and opportunities to make a flex play or No. 3, depending on the team's QB play.

David Nelson, Bills (42 percent ownership)
Nelson (5-47-1 on eight targets) had a great day against a usually tough Jets defense and, playing in the slot, his natural position, could produce. The Bills are streaky, so he's risky, but with RB Fred Jackson (leg) and Donald Jones (ankle) out for the year, it will give him extra targets and depth on your roster.

Jason Avant  (10 percent ownership) and Riley Cooper (5 percent ownership), Eagles
Avant (8-110-1 on 14 targets) and Cooper (3-71-0 on five targets) make short-term pickups because Jeremy Maclin (shoulder, hamstring) may not play. Cooper is the starter and has a two-game average of four catches for 73 yards and 0.5 TDs on 8.5 targets. As a starter he's seeing enough time to warrant a pickup, but Avant is an enigma with only four games over 69 yards and no TDs until this past week. I wouldn't recommend picking Avant up, but in larger leagues desperate for an injury fill-in, you could do worse.

Johnny Knox, Bears (31 percent ownership)
Knox (4-145-1 on 10 targets) posted monster numbers but was on most fantasy benches if not the waiver wire. He has a two-game average of 3.5 catches for 121 yards and one TD. He has regained his fantasy value as QB Caleb Hanie targeted him 10 times. However, he's only depth for your roster.

Terrell Owens, free agent (2 percent ownership)
Rumors indicate the Patriots could take a look at him, but that's all they are, rumors. It's similar to when a player retires. There's always someone who drafts him in case he comes back. In case there's any truth to the rumor, you could add him to your roster. However, this late in the season, it could be too late to get any fantasy production as he'll have to learn a new offense.

TIGHT ENDS

Brent Celek, Eagles (36 percent ownership)
Celek (5-75-0 on six targets) has become an integral part of the offense the past six games and, during that time, has a per-game average of 5.5 catches for 64 yards and 0.3 TDs on 7.7 targets. He owes his resurgence to the QBs staying in the pocket longer and looking for him instead of running. He has great value going into the playoffs.

Jermaine Gresham, Bengals (38 percent ownership)
Gresham (5-68-1 on nine targets) is averaging 4.1 catches for 41.1 yards and 0.6 TDs on 6.8 targets. In larger leagues he warrants fantasy consideration as an injury fill-in with two TDs in three games.

Scott Chandler, Bills (34 percent ownership)
Chandler (6-50-0 on seven targets), as expected, saw a bump in targets with the loss of RB Fred Jackson (leg) and No. 2 WR Donald Jones (ankle) to injured reserve. Chandler has a two-game average of 5.5 catches for 60.5 yards and zero TDs on 6.5 targets. The Bills played well against the Jets, no easy feat, and with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick playing hot, it could be the start of one of his famed hot streaks. If he utilizes Chandler more often between the 20s, Chandler warrants fantasy consideration.

Bellator tournament ends in nut trauma

It's hard to beat twitter as the go to place for 24/7 TMI. This week's example comes care of Bellator's Eric Prindle, who's heavyweight tournament final against Thiago Santos ended 84 seconds into the fight when Santos kicked Prindle square in the junk while Prindle was on his back. The fight was declared a no contest and we now have further evidence that no matter how irresponsible you are when throwing bombs at your opponent's junk, a no-contest is the worst that will happen to you.

Speaking of evidence, Prindle decided after the event that the best way to show people how serious of a ball injury he had was to tweet a picture out to the world. And since we already broke our 'no scrotes' policy with Dennis Hallman, of course we have it for you after the jump. Just be aware, it is indeed a testicle. So now I ask you: if it means less pictures of swollen balls, maybe we should force fighters to wear those compression short / cup combos that actually work?

Huerta vs Koppenhaver for your viewing pleasure

Those of you who were spellbound this weekend by Bellator, crazy somersault kicks, and highly dubious Polish MMA decisions (later overturned) may have missed one other excellent fight from this weekend, fought under the Ultimate Warrior Fighting banner. No, there was no Native American curse ritual performed against Hulk Hogan after smoking large amounts of peyote; the fight actually featured War Machine stopping Roger Huerta via TKO in his first fight back from his year in prison. It?s nice to see War Machine brutalizing other men while locked in a cage instead of... Oh, wait... Well, at least he doesn?t have to pluck his asshole hairs with his fingers or intentionally piss on his own feet anymore.

War Machine and Roger Huerta both looked quite good in the fight before a Huerta rib injury led to the TKO; it made me really hope that War Machine keeps it together enough to justify the ?Future Legend? shirt he wore after the fight. But the fighter who came out of the bout looking the best was definitely color commentator Phil Baroni. So much time has passed since his color commentating job at UFC 42 that I had forgotten how unabashedly awesome it is to hear the guy talk. Baroni has done commentary with the MMA Big Show since then, but who the fuck watches that shit?

His commentary is generally spot-on, and he managed to see that Huerta had a rib injury far before I would have noticed it based on the crappy low-resolution video I saw. His enthusiasm and excitement are contagious. He also saves promoters money because he doubles as director. Witness a couple of his quotes from the fight commentary:

There's a ring card girl with a nice ass... put it on her, not me, dude.

The camera guy's telling me to look at him. Shut up, camera guy, before I knock ya out. I'm excited for this fight.

Therefore, Phil Baroni should be hired to commentate for at least one show per week, and preferably every MMA fight from now until the end of time. Let us all pray to the MMA gods and the gypsy curse lady for this to occur.

My First Fight: Miguel Torres

Filed under:

Miguel TorresNo fight fan is in any danger of confusing Miguel Torres for Muhammad Ali. One's a skinny bantamweight MMA fighter with a mullet, and the other is Muhammad Ali. But even though they might be separated by a few decades and many, many pounds, both owe the genesis of their fight careers to a specific type of childhood anguish: the stolen bike.

Torres' bike had been a gift from his uncle. It wasn't exactly top of the line, but it had the word 'Ambush' written across the side, which was undeniably cool for reasons Torres couldn't quite explain. He'd made it even cooler by covering much of the bike in duct tape.

"You know, so it was camouflaged," he says.

One Friday afternoon he rode his bike down to a local shrimp joint to get a basket of french fries to split with his friends, but the proprietor wouldn't let him bring his bike inside. Torres didn't have a lock, so he left it just outside, where he could see the front tire through the window.

"But this was when [arcade game] Mortal Kombat first came out," he says with a sigh. "I came in for the food, but all I heard was 'Finish him!'"

You know where this is going. Torres had some change in his pocket, and what kid in the early 90s could resist the magnetic pull of a good video game -- especially Mortal Kombat? Torres tried to keep an eye on that bike tire through the window, but he got absorbed in the game, taking on one challenger after another. When he glanced over his shoulder at the end of it all, no more bike.

"It was the first time I'd ever had anything stolen from me," he says. "I was crushed. I ran around the whole block screaming, 'Where's my bike!?'"

When that didn't yield the result he was hoping for, Torres went home to "lift weights." And by weights, he means bricks. It was the closest thing he could find to a weight set in his neighborhood, and all he knew was that he needed to get stronger if he was going to be ready when he finally came face to face with the bike thief. He also convinced his parents to let him take some Taekwondo lessons, "until I found out it was all bulls--t."

He'd go to school and his friends on the wrestling team would taunt him, calling him 'karate boy' and challenging him to show them his stuff.

"Then they'd take me down and get me in just the worst holds you can imagine. It sucked."

But little by little, Torres was learning different art forms from whatever sources he could find. A little taekwondo here, some wrestling there, even a trip to a local boxing gym where they sparred on bare feet on a concrete floor. During one such session Torres so angered an older sparring partner with his frantic Jeff Speakman routine that the man threw off his gloves and double-legged him onto the concrete floor before choking the teenage Torres with his own t-shirt.

Afterward, "the guy told me, 'That's jiu-jitsu.' I was like, I have to learn that."

Somewhere along the way Torres became a martial arts junkie. He read all the books, held himself to a rigid diet he didn't fully understand, took challenge matches wherever he could find them. All that was left was to find a real fight, a pro fight, something that would test him. This is where Finke's came in.

If you look at Torres' record, it'll tell you that his first fight was against Larry Pulliam at Finke's Full Contact Challenge in March of 2000. That sounds pretty official, at least until you realize that Finke's was the name of a local bar in Highland, Indiana, and the "Full Contact Challenge" was more or less a gimmick to try and drum up a crowd for those slow Monday nights.

"I had this idea about how it would be, but I walked in that bar and it was almost empty. It was just these shady characters -- bikers, gang-bangers. They gave me this form to fill out, and it was basically a cheap contract saying I wouldn't sue if I got hurt or killed. After that, it was: real name, stage name, height, weight, and age. That was it. There was no scale to check your weight. No athletic commission. You could wrap your hands if you wanted or you could not wrap your hands. All they checked was mouthpiece and cup."

Even that requirement proved difficult for some of the fighters. Some of them had brought boil-and-bite mouthpieces -- the cheap ones that you can form to your teeth after a quick dunk in hot water -- but they hadn't even bothered to take them out of the package before fight night. Maybe it was just as well, because they ended up passing the mouthpieces back and forth, among other things.

"There were guys literally saying, 'Hey, if you let me use your mouthpiece, I'll let you use my cup,'" Torres says. "And they'd be there after the fights swapping mouthpieces and cups. Guys who weren't even wearing jockstraps were just shoving someone else's cup in their shorts."

As Torres was warming up backstage, one of his coaches stretched him out while attempting to impart various Eastern philosophies. Ebb and flow. Yin and yang. That sort of stuff. His boxing coach had different advice, and it involved "[expletive]ing this guy up" and then befriending the strippers who'd been hired to serve as ring girls. Only maybe it wasn't quite so delicately put.

"That was the last thing I heard before I went in there. And in my mind I had this idea of what a fight should be, just this war. I had images of me hitting him and him hurting me and me getting cut and bleeding, but coming back and winning the fight. Like a Rocky movie or a kung fu movie. I thought the whole 15-minute fight would be like that. I was thinking of all the Bruce Lee books I'd read, The Art of War. All that."

Instead what happened was that Pulliam came forward, was backed off by a Torres head kick attempt -- "the worst kick you can imagine," he says -- and then came forward again, straight into a Torres left hook. That was all it took. Pulliam went down, attempted to get back to his feet, then collapsed again. The ref had no choice but to stop it.

"I looked at my corner like, that's it?" Torres says. "I didn't want to get out of the ring. I was so upset. I wanted to fight again."

The crowd loved it. So did his coaches. But Torres left the ring with a disappointed feeling in the pit of his stomach. That disappointment continued when Finke's employees explained that, while he was old enough to fight in their establishment, he wasn't old enough to drink there.

"I thought at least I'd get to hang out in the bar. But no, they kicked me out because I was underage. They were all hanging out, drinking with the strippers, but I was outside in the car eating McDonald's."

Torres stayed there waiting for his coaches to return for, by his estimation, "about four hours." Not exactly the victory party you imagine for yourself after your first professional win, but Torres was already hooked. Even though 'MMA fighter' wasn't much of an actual job description in the spring of 2000, Torres "knew right away that this was what I wanted to do."

He'd go on to fight many more bouts at Finke's while trying to keep it a secret from his family, but word spread about the skinny Mexican kid who never lost a bout. Not long after, Torres' father was injured by a crane at a construction site where he was working. When Torres went to see him in the hospital one day he found that his father had had a visit from a work friend who told him all about seeing his son fight down at the sports bar. The secret was out.

"So I told him all about it," Torres says. "He said, 'How much are they paying you?' I was like, I don't fight for money. I fight for the art, for respect. I was an idealist. And my dad, from his hospital bed, he reached out and smacked me on the back of the neck."

Torres' father's friend had told him all about how the guys from the construction crew loved these fight nights, how they paid $25 a head to get in, how the young Torres was quickly becoming a major draw.

"My dad said, 'You've got to get paid. This guy's making money off you, and you're the one getting hurt.' So I went back and talked to the promoter and told him I wanted to start getting paid."

And he did. For his next fight, Torres made the princely sum of $100. It was enough to fill his Camaro up with gas and still have enough to take a girl out on a date. Plus, it was money he'd earned with his art, his skills. It was perfect. It was everything he thought he needed at the time, and it was just the beginning.

Minowaman vs Da Spyder

Cool.  Now try that on someone who has a clue what they're doing.

Unfortunately, the briefly-rumoured Brian Stann vs Minowaman bout never materialized, but not because the man in the tighty-reddies and tiger mask isn't available.  In fact, he's willing to come all the way to America for the very first time... well, as far as Hawaii at least.  The new rumour is that Minowaman has signed a three-fight contract with ProElite, and will face Kendall Grove at ProElite 3 in January in what will probably be the main event, though it (and the rest of the card) has yet to be officially announced.

Minowa has an impressive 91 fights on his record, but managed to lose 32 of those even though a good portion of his opponents might as well have been named Canny McCannerson.  He won all four of his fights thus far in 2011, but the only one you might have seen was his ridiculous tooling of some random fatass at DREAM 17 (see above).  No surprise there, since he's pretty much made it his trademark to tool dudes who are nearly double his size.  Speaking of which, I guess Tim Sylvia must not have been available, what with all his police work and such.

As for Grove, he made quick work of Joe Riggs at ProElite 1 back in August, and even considering how totally shot Riggs is these days, he's still way stiffer competition than Minowaman has faced since he "knocked out" Socouldyou two years ago.  Both guys have earned most of their wins by submission, so things could get pretty neato-keeno if the fight hits the mat, but I have to think the smart money is on Da Spyder either way.  Bottom line, this will tell us a lot about how good Minowaman is (if anyone actually cares), and a loss to him would not look good on Grove's resume.  No sir, not one bit.

An Offering of Thanks to Some of MMA's Most Generous

Fighting and helping seem a counterintuitive combination, yet MMA is blessed with many giving athletes and personalities who are difference-makers in their communities and the world at large.

Many of those selfless efforts go undocumented and under the radar, but in the spirit of the holiday season, we've dug up some of the kind works undertaken by the men and women of the MMA world.

This list is by no means meant to be comprehensive; rather, it is a sampling of some of the acts of generosity that often get lost in the shuffle of the everyday news cycle. And it is a chance to say, Thanks.

Enson Inoue
In the wake of the devastating March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Inoue -- a Japanese-American with long roots in the sport -- was a one-man effort, traveling through the hardest-hit areas and offering assistance to the region's residents in the form of clothing, food and supplies, as well as toys to children. Inoue reportedly drained his own personal savings in an effort to bring relief to every person he could reach.

The UFC/Dana White
The UFC's charitable causes are many, though they often go unseen by the public and media. But in January, the promotion ran an event on a US military base for the second time in its history, with all seats free to base personnel, and proceeds from a corresponding online auction as well as donations benefiting wounded veterans through the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The event ended up raising $4.1 million for the fund.

Brian Stann
The president of Hire Heroes USA, a non-profit group that offers job search and placement assistance to US military veterans, Stann -- a former US Marine and current UFC middleweight -- helps run an organization with crucial importance during a time of economic hardship for many. The group has a special focus on the two demographics statistically most likely to be unemployed: young veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as wounded or disabled veterans.

Alex Davis, Dan Lambert, Joe Mullings
In early January, the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was hit hard by torrential rains that caused landslides and killed over 800 people. Among the hardest-hit communities was Nova Friburgo, the hometown of well-known MMA manager Alex Davis, along with UFC lightweight Edson Barboza, and others. Davis was in Nova Friburgo at the time and volunteered his time and resources to help, while Lambert and Mullings, gym owners of American Top Team and The Armory, respectively, started Combat Athlete Charities in order to support his relief efforts.

Brendan Schaub
When UFC heavyweight Schaub first visited Brazil in June, he was able to see some of the impoverished parts of the country, and he promised to return with some help when he came back to fight in August. True to his word, Schaub delivered several duffel bags worth of training equipment to a local gym in the underprivileged part of Tijuquinha, Brazil just days before his fight with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134.

American Kickboxing Academy
Many gyms have long roots in their communities and take part in volunteering, and San Jose, California-based AKA is among the more active ones. Among the groups the team benefits is Turning Wheels for Kids, a local organization that provides bicycles to underprivileged kids. Fighters including Cain Velasquez, Cung Le, Gilbert Melendez, Daniel Cormier and "King" Muhammed Lawal have offered up their time to the cause. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the gym's fighters also recently volunteered time at Martha's Kitchen in San Jose, helping to feed the hungry.

Jon Jones
By now, everyone has heard the story of Jones helping to stop a robbery just hours before he won the UFC light-heavyweight champion. But that wasn't his only charitable act of the day. Indeed, he donated his substantial after-party appearance fee to a charity designed to combat children's cancers.

Jose Aldo
After every one of his fights, the UFC featherweight champion autographs and auctions off his fight gear to benefit his team's Nova Uniao community program, which is designed to assist underprivileged youth.

Ben Askren
After visiting tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri, earlier this year, the Bellator welterweight champion secured 300 tickets to Bellator 53 for Joplin residents to give them one night of enjoyment. "It's not a huge gesture. It's not like we're rebuilding their houses, but every small thing helps," Askren said.

Freestyle Cage Fighting & BlackEye Promotions
In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month, both Freestyle Cage Fighting (FCF) and BlackEye Promotions ran events on January 1 with proceeds going towards cancer research. FCF's event, titled "Fight Strong for the Cure" ran a nine-fight card featuring all women, while BlackEye's 16-fight card was subtitled "Breast Cancer Beatdown."

Dan Henderson/Clinch Gear
The UFC light-heavyweight gave fans a thrill with his recent fight with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, a fight which was quickly named as one of the best all-time scraps. But Henderson and his Clinch Gear company were also giving back in other ways, pledging to provide a Thanksgiving Day meal to a family of four for every official walkout T-shirt purchased through his website. On Thanksgiving, the company expects to feed over 2,000 families (8,000 people) through the Denver Rescue Mission and San Diego Rescue Mission, and the promotion has been extended through Christmas with additional donations to be made at that time.

The Fans
Few sports have a community as tight-knit and passionate as MMA, and even when you argue, you come together when it matters. Fans have generously donated to a countless number of causes. Among the most recent is the Daniel James Miller Foundation. The son of UFC fighter Dan Miller is in need of a kidney transplant and insurance does not pay for the entire procedure. The Foundation was set up in order to fund his treatment, and the family recently released a statement saying they were left "speechless" following the overwhelming support they have received.

Dantas Wins Bellator Bantamweight Tourney, Heavyweights Fight to No Contest

Filed under:

In addition to Kurt Pellegrino's swan song, Saturday night's Bellator 59 event also featured the Season 5 tournament finals in the heavyweight and bantamweight divisions. But while the bantamweight tournament final was a solid fight that crowned a new top contender in the division, the heavyweight fight was a debacle.

That heavyweight fight, Thiago Santos vs. Eric Prindle, came to a confusing and confounding ending, with a conference including the referee, cageside doctor and athletic commission officials taking much longer than the fight itself. It was ultimately ruled a no contest.

With Prindle on the ground on his back, Santos kicked him right between the legs, and the referee called a halt to the action for an illegal low blow. After five minutes Prindle said he still couldn't continue fighting, and it was announced that the low kick was unintentional, so the fight was declared a no contest. But it's hard to see how anyone watching the kick could think it was unintentional: If Santos didn't intend to kick Prindle between his legs, what did he intend to do?

In any event, Santos and Prindle will now have to have a rematch to determine which one of them gets the next crack at Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad. That's a disappointment for Bellator, which was hoping to find itself a good contender for Konrad to fight.

At bantamweight, Eduardo Dantas beat Alexis Vila by unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three judges' cards, to win the Bellator bantamweight tournament. The fight gave Vila the first loss of his MMA career and improves Dantas to 13-2. Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky will defend his belt against Dantas next year, and that should be a good fight: Bellator has a fun and exciting bantamweight division, and it's too bad that the bantamweight tournament final was overshadowed by the mess at heavyweight.

And in a big surprise to begin the MTV2 televised broadcast, the 19-year-old Polish lightweight Marcin Held won a split decision victory over former Ultimate Fighter finalist Phillipe Nover. The fight easily could have gone for Nover, and the decision had the crowd booing. A Held-Nover rematch would make a lot of sense for Bellator in 2012.
