You Might Be A RoidBall...

It is so sad, so heartbreaking. So many fighters live in denial about their problem steroid addiction. (?I didn?t know it was in my supplements.? ?I felt weak and moody during training camp, sniff-sniff? ?A ?doctor? said my hormone level was deficient, as did my wife, heh-heh.?) To help our flummoxed fighter family find its way past roid rage and towards acceptance, we here at Fightlinker offer a simple 12-step diagnostic to assist them in better understanding their disease. It?s like the Michigan Alcoholism Screen Test meets Jeff Foxworthy.

1) If Muscle and Fitness or Men?s Fitness or any of those other homoerotic publications have asked you to be their cover boy, you might be a roidball.

2) If your nickname is ?The Muscle Shark,? ?The Specimen,? or ?Cyborg,? you might be a roidball.

3) If you are a white guy with the musculature of a black guy, you might be a roidball.

4) If you are a Brazilian gal with the musculature of a 1980?s East German Olympic swimmer, you might be a roidball.

5) If you are a 35 to 45-year-old former American collegiate wrestler with the musculature of an 18-year-old, you might be a roidball.

6) If you have been busted before, you might be a roidball.

7) If you were a pro-wrestler, competed in Japan, or competed as a pro-wrestler in Japan, you might be a roidball.

8) If you have bitch tits, you might be a roidball.

9) If you tweak your nipples before fights so as to avoid looking like you have bitch tits, you might be a roidball.

10) If your career took a dive and never recovered after steroid testing was introduced, you might be a roidball.

11) If you are the kind of scumbag who engaged in money laundering and mortgage fraud and then snitched on your co-conspirators to get a lighter sentence, you might be a roidball.

12) If Dana White threatened to banish you from the UFC forever only to allow you to compete again when your marketability increased, you might be a roidball.

A Kenny Florian interview sneak peek

Here's a quick taste of the Kenny Florian interview we did earlier today:

Does it annoy you when people accuse you of dropping down in weight classes just to get more title shots?

It does, yeah. People don?t use common sense when they think about this and the history of the sport. I had an opportunity to be on The Ultimate Fighter at middleweight despite being a chubby 175 pounder. I was never even 180 pounds when I fought on the show. People keep saying 'You keep dropping down', but I was never 185 or even 170. The only reason I fought at 170 pounds was because the UFC didn?t even have a lightweight division yet. Dana brought me into the office on the show and said 'You?re a lightweight fighter ? as soon as we have it, that?s where you will be fighting.'

Expect the full thing up tommorrow, including many of the questions you guys submitted though our Ask Kenny post!

ProElite, Former Home of Kimbo Slice, Relaunches MMA Promotion

ProElite, the former parent company of EliteXC, will attempt to restart its mixed martial arts business with a return to promoting events. On Wednesday, the company -- now owned by Stratus Media Group Inc. -- announced it will host an event on August 27 in Oahu, Hawaii.

The event will take place at Blaisdell Arena in Waikiki.

ProElite, once the home of Kimbo Slice, had a rapid rise and fall in the mid-to-late 2000s, founded in 2006 as a partnership with Showtime Networks. The company made history in May 2008, when its EliteXC-branded event was broadcast on CBS, making it the first time an MMA event aired on primetime U.S. network television.

Headlined by a Slice vs Jamees Thompson matchup, the event drew an average of 4.3 million viewers, with over 6.5 million tuning in to watch the main event bout. As quickly as it rose though, the company's fortunes sank, buried by mountains of debt.

Its symbolic end came just months after that ground-breaking network breakthrough. On Oct. 4, 2008, Slice was scheduled to take on Ken Shamrock in another CBS broadcast. Shamrock, however, suffered a deep laceration on the day of the fight and was unable to compete. In a pinch, EliteXC replaced him with undercard fighter Seth Petruzelli.

The company had put most of their marketing muscle behind Slice, and when Petruzelli, a true light-heavyweight fighting the heavyweight Slice on short notice, knocked him out in 14 seconds, damage was done. Worse, the day after the fight, Petrzuelli told an Orlando radio show that EliteXC promoters made it "worth my while" to keep the fight standing, essentially asking him to employ a style in which Slice was more capable of being competitive. The backlash to the possible fight manipulation was swift and furious.

Though Florida regulators eventually cleared EliteXC of any wrongdoing, by then it was too late. The day before being cleared, ProElite threw in the towel.

While Slice and to a lesser extent, Petruzelli, have received much of the lion's share of the blame for sinking the company, in reality, financial issues had the company underwater well before that. By the time it ceased operations on Oct. 21, ProElite was $55 million in the red despite existing for less than two years.

In recent months, rumors of a revival swirled, proven true by the Stratus Media Group purchase. Reportedly, ProElite was one of the bidders when Strikeforce went up for sale in late 2010. The company recently hired former Strikeforce matchmaker Rich Chou and former ICON owner T.J. Thompson as executives. The promotion said it plans to announce fighter signings and matchups for the August 27 event in the near future.

FS Jackson attends Bucs' unofficial minicamp

FS Tanard Jackson, who was suspended indefinitely for violating the league's substance-abuse policy last season, attended the Buccaneers' players' unofficial voluntary minicamp on Wednesday.

According to Pewter Report, Jackson was at IMG Performance Institute in Bradenton, Fla., for the Bucs' players' three-day minicamp. He was suspended on Sept. 22, 2010 and can apply for reinstatement at the end of July. He was also suspended for the first four games of 2009.

Jackson is in the final year of a four-year contract. He said that this was the first time he had communicated with some of his teammates since last September.

Jackson, who turns 26 on July 21, has started all 46 games he has played in his career, recording eight interceptions and 24 pass breakups.

UFC 132 Predictions

Filed under:

Urijah Faber will face Dominick Cruz in the main event of UFC 132.The first bantamweight title fight in UFC history will take place at UFC 132, with Dominick Cruz, the 135-pound champion from World Extreme Cagefighting, set to make his Octagon debut against the only man ever to defeat him, Urijah Faber. That's the headliner on what promises to be a solid top-to-bottom card, and we've got the predictions right here.

What: UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber

When: Saturday, Spike card begins at 8 PM ET and the pay-per-view starts at 9.

Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas

Predictions on the pay-per-view fights below.

Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber
I've agonized over how this fight is going to go, and I've changed my mind about 10 times. There are just so many possibilities.

One possibility -- and it's a possibility not many people even seem to be considering -- is that Faber is just a better fighter than Cruz, matches up well with him, and will beat him handily. That's certainly how it looked the first time these two guys fought: Faber had absolutely no trouble getting Cruz to the ground, sinking in a tight guillotine choke, and forcing Cruz to tap after just 98 seconds of fighting.

Another possibility is that Cruz has improved so much -- and Faber has declined so much -- that Cruz is now far better than Faber. After all, the 25-year-old Cruz looks like he's just entering his prime and has won eight straight fights since losing to Faber. But the 32-year-old Faber looks like he's slowing down, and is just 4-3 in his last seven fights.

The final possibility is that Cruz and Faber are more or less equally matched, and their fight could go any number of ways. Cruz could use his reach advantage and his point-fighting style of striking to keep Faber at bay and win a decision. Faber could use his superior wrestling to take the fight to the ground and win it there. Cruz could surprise us by showing a submission game that has been absent from his past fights. Faber could do something crazy with his dynamic, unpredictable style. Basically, the final possibility is that we should expect the unexpected.

That last possibility is more or less what I expect, but when it's all said and done I think we're going to have an upset, and we're going to have a new champion.
Pick: Faber

Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben
Silva is returning to the Octagon on the day before his 35th birthday, after almost a year and a half away. We really have no way of knowing if he has anything left: Yes, he beat Michael Bisping in his last fight, but he had lost five of his last six heading into that fight, and now ring rust is going to be a factor.

On the other hand, Leben is nowhere near as talented a fighter as Silva is. Leben is a wild brawler with a fun style to watch, but fighting like that is playing to Silva's strengths -- and Silva does it better than Leben does. I don't think Silva will ever be close to the fighter he was five years ago, but I do think he'll pull this one out.
Pick: Silva

Tito Ortiz vs. Ryan Bader
Speaking of fighters who are past their primes, Ortiz hasn't won a fight since he beat Ken Shamrock in 2006. Ortiz really isn't good enough anymore to be fighting high-quality light heavyweights, but the UFC keeps him around because he has name value, and because Bader is a guy who could use a win over a name opponent. Bader will win, but that win won't tell us much.
Pick: Bader

Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Condit established himself as a potential welterweight title contender in 2010, with a Fight of the Night win over Rory MacDonald and a Knockout of the Night win over Dan Hardy. Unfortunately for him, I think his streak of victories and his streak of exciting fights is going away against Kim, who has just the right style to take Condit down, control him on the ground and win a fairly dull decision.
Pick: Kim

Dennis Siver vs. Matt Wiman
Three years ago, Siver lost a fight to Melvin Guillard, got cut by the UFC, and looked like he just wasn't good enough to compete at the highest levels. But Siver got back into the UFC in 2009 and has been excellent, winning six of his seven fights. Wiman, who's on a three-fight winning streak, represents a good challenge for Siver, but I think Siver's striking will prove to be too much.
Pick: Siver

Meanwhile, at Friday's Strikeforce Challengers event

Julia Budd and Germaine de Randamie became the first women to fight on a Zuffa card, but the match was a stinker as Budd spent the whole fight trying to take de Randamie down or lying on top of her doing very little. Budd was KO'd in 14 seconds in her last fight and de Randamie had already KO'd her in the past in a kickboxing match, so if she seemed a bit gun shy, that might be why. Based on some interviews, I expect de Randamie to head back down to her original weight of 135 pounds. Yeah, Budd's a real 145er and still had trouble muscling around de Randamie. But to be fair, I think at least 20 of those pounds are located solely in Budd's ridonkulous abs.

Quinn Mulhern rocked a sick pornstache and some very active jiu jitsu but it wasn't enough to keep Jason High from slamming him across every square inch of the cage over the course of their 15 minute fight. High dominated the fight from bell to bell, taking Mulhern down at will and keeping busy with nasty looking ground and pound. Mulhern wasn't afraid to throw his legs up and go for rubber guard but High just slipped right out again and again and continued his assault. Pretty impressive showing from Jason High, even if he doesn't agree.

2011 NFL Free Agents: Colts Should Target Cliff Avril, DE, Lions

They Said It: week of June 27

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Giants QB Eli Manning, telling the "Dan Patrick Show" he thinks there is a greater chance of WR Plaxico Burress being welcomed back to the Giants than RB Tiki Barber (as quoted by the New York Post): "Probably Plaxico just because he has probably fonder memories of winning a Super Bowl and that catch for the touchdown in Super Bowl XLII. Tiki ended on a bad note and it's really a shame, he should be remembered as a great Giants running back and a terrific player, because he was. Just kind of the way he went out and burned a few bridges with the fans and kind of went after me a little bit, it's unfortunate. I'm not happy about it in that sense, so I think Plaxico would probably be welcomed back a little quicker."

Jets LB LaDainian Tomlinson, quoted by The Associated Press (on website of the New York Post) on relishing the opportunity to be a third-down back this season: "I think I proved that I can still play and that I've got a lot left. Let me do a lot of the pass catching and the blocking and kind of that third-down role and still be able to take some handoffs. Beating up my body, running through there, taking all the carries, and I can run routes, I've proved that." Added Tomlinson on getting so close to his first Super Bowl last season: "I was able to kind of taste how close it was. … It seemed like a dream ending to a fine career. It didn't work out like that, but at the same time, it let's me know how close I am. I have a heck of a team, great coaching staff and I expect us to make another push."

Lions PK Dave Rayner doesn't envision a big impact from kickoffs being moved back five yards in 2011, as quoted in the Detroit Free Press: "I don't know. If it was, like, 10 yards, I would say that would be a big deal. To me, I think the five yards is going to have those guys that already hit a ton of touchbacks just hitting more." Rayner continued: "Returners are going to bring it out if it's five (yards) deep. I mean, they do now. So if you're kicking now, and you're averaging (kicking to) the goal line, it's going to go five deep. They're still going to bring that back."

Buccaneers LB Tyrone McKenzie, quoted on tbo.com on the maturity of his young team: "I see a lot of guys on our team who are mature above their time. From Day One when I came in, I've tried to be accountable to my teammates and show them I'm here to win. It feels great to be around a bunch of guys that know we have to put the work in to get results."

Ravens S Ed Reed, telling ESPN last week how much he enjoyed playing for former Ravens defensive coordinator and current Jets head coach Rex Ryan, whom he compared to a "dad" or "brother:" "We wanted Rex as a head coach in Baltimore. We did not want him to leave. It hurt when he left. But we knew he was a great coach." Added Reed, "I would play anywhere for Rex — dark alley, on the street, in high school football, sand lot, anywhere. Because he makes it fun. He loves this game. He truly loves this game. There's a reason why those guys in New York back him the way they do."

Monday, June 27, 2011

Dolphins OLB Channing Crowder, quoted on SunSentinel.com on his reputation around the league: "I know people hate me. When people hate on you you've got to be doing something right."

Titans new offensive coordinator Chris Palmer, discussing rookie QB Jake Locker's ability to make plays with his legs, as quoted in The Tennessean: "You don't want to get him beat up. But you know you have this wild card in your pocket, you know? He has speed running it … " Added Palmer on Locker's willingness to continue surveying the field when pressure starts bearing down: "He shows some courage there. I would write on my college report, 'Hangs in the pocket, will take a hit.' "

Former NFL PK Morten Andersen, who was part of the work stoppages in 1982 and '87, giving his take on the lockout, as quoted on theadvertiser.com: "This one is about money — greed. They're fighting over $9 billion. There wasn't that much money on the table back then. But it's also about honoring the history of the game and taking care of the players before us in the NFL. I'm one of the fortunate ones. I'm not crippled. There needs to be better benefits for former players to pay their medical bills. I'm for getting a solid resolution that benefits everybody. There is enough money to do that."

Bears rookie OT Gabe Carimi, quoted on chicagobears.com on attempting to play left tackle in the NFL: "Honestly, that's my goal because it's a high-value position. But, whatever the team's needs are, that's what I'll be. Wherever they start me and is best for the Bears." Added Carimi on staying in shape during the lockout: "Well, I've been training. That's the biggest part of my day, to get two, three hours of training, and I've been in about an eight-week cycle since the draft, which leads up until now."

Panthers new quarterbacks coach Mike Shula, discussing QB Jimmy Clausen, as quoted on panthers.com: "There's still so many unknowns with Jimmy — on where his ceiling is mentally and physically — but he was exposed to a lot in college with playing quarterback at Notre Dame and also working with Charlie Weis, who does a great job offensively preparing a young man for the NFL." Added Shula about top pick Cam Newton: "It's the same thing with Cam. He was exposed to a lot in his college career. And last year as the games got bigger, he played better in an offense that he was very good in but an offense you really don't see a lot in the NFL. He's going to have a lot of learning to do, but at the same time we're going to have to make sure that we find things for him and for Jimmy that they do well and put them in position to do those things."

UFC on Versus 4 Live Blog: Rick Story vs. Charlie Brenneman Updates

Filed under:

This is the UFC on Versus 4 live blog for Rick Story vs. Charlie Brenneman, a welterweight bout on tonight's event at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Story (13-3) has one his last six fights and just a month ago defeated Thiago Alves. Brenneman (13-2) lost his spot on the card earlier this week when opponent TJ Grand had to bow out due to illness. However, with Nate Marquardt failing his medicals, Brenneman agreed to step in to face Story. Brenneman is coming off a decision win over Amilcar Alves at UFC Fight for the Troops 2 in January.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Brenneman rushes in quickly for a takedown but Story ends up slamming him down. Back to their feet, Story crowds him against the fence and lands a knee to the legs. Brenneman pushes Story against the cage as they continue to jockey for position. Each man lands a right hand as they break. Brenneman takes him down moments later, but Story uses the momentum of the big move to get to his feet. Brenneman lands a straight right, then puts Story on his back. Brenneman moves to side control with half the round left. Story regains guard 30 seconds later. Brenneman with body shots from the top as Story tries to tie him up and force a standup. Brenneman isn't able to land big shots, but he does enough to keep the position and ride out the round. It's 10-9 for Brenneman.

Round 2: Brenneman takes Story down in the opening 15 seconds. Story tries a guillotine. Brenneman works free and they scramble back to their feet. Story lands a punch and knee against the fence, but Brenneman explodes in for a shot and takes Story down again. Three minutes left. Brenneman is in Story's guard. Brenneman grinding from the top. Story tries to get up but Brenneman keeps him planted. Story hunts a guillotine from the bottom. Brenneman free and fires off some body punches from the top. Brenneman moves to side control, but there's not enough time to work from the position. Brenneman wins the round again, 10-9.

Round 3: Story comes out with urgency with aggressive striking. Brenneman ducks low and drives for another takedown. Story looks for an arm bar, then switches to a kimura. With them stuck in that position, referee Mark Matheny breaks them up. Brenneman moves for the takedown, Story tries a triangle from his back. It looks tight but Brenneman works out of it. Story re-adjusts. Story can't finish it. Story ends up on top against the fence. Story lands left hands. Story ends up in full mount. Brenneman tries to tie him up. Less than a minute left. Story leaves space and Brenneman gets free. Story goes for a kimura again. Clock winding down. Story takes the round but Brenneman is going to upset Story. Judges cards to come.

Winner: Charlie Brenneman via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Peyton Manning's 'Football Cops' Gets Mixed Reviews From Some Fans

'Through My Eyes' offers inside look at QB Tebow

Tim Tebow is not your average football player.

The former Heisman Trophy winner will always stand out for his hybrid style of play at the quarterback position, but it's Tebow's mental makeup that truly has separated him from the pack.

That has never been more evident than in Tebow's new autobiography "Through My Eyes," co-written with Nathan Whitaker, where the 23-year-old signalcaller gives fans an inside look into how he has developed into the person he is today.

Tebow's true path began prior to his birth, with the now well-documented story of his mother, Pam, disregarding the advice of her doctors to abort Tim for health reasons, saving the life of her son, who would go on to become one of college football's all-time greats.

Early on, Tebow discusses how big of an impact his birth had on his entire family — and ultimately himself — and shares with readers one of the first of many lessons he learned from his parents.

"… faith is like a muscle," Tebow wrote in the second chapter, entitled 'Given a Chance.' "You trust God for the small things and when He comes through, your muscle grows. This enables you to trust God for the bigger things, in fact, all things."

Tebow's faith is clearly expressed throughout, as each chapter begins with a verse from the bible. But in between the motivational and inspiring excerpts, readers really do get a sense of what Tebow's life has been like through "his own eyes," in a view not often attainable for athletes of his stature.

While his tales of home schooling and high school success serve as interesting background knowledge, this was a book written for the hardcore Florida Gators fan.

All the way from his recruitment (where he came ever-so close to signing with Alabama) to his final collegiate game (a win over Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl), Tebow leaves it all on the table when discussing his Gators career.

He chose to attend Florida for many reasons, which included the fact that the team was championship-ready. Tebow had no problem watching QB Chris Leak lead the Gators to the national championship his first year on campus, giving a game-by-game analysis of what the historic season was like for him.

In fact, Tebow gives a full account of nearly every game he played in at Florida, from his '07 Heisman Trophy season to his second national championship in '08, down to the very end of his career.

While it's easy to get bogged down in some of the details, Tebow mixes in a lot of his own off-the-field perspective. Without giving too much away, he touches on adjusting his leadership style, outworking his competition and deciding to return to Florida for his senior season not only for football reasons, but because of the larger platform he had in Gainesville to impact more people's lives and become a larger role model.

For those looking for more of Tim Tebow: Denver Broncos quarterback, there's not quite as much to offer. He does touch on the draft and his first season in Denver, but not in nearly the same amount of detail as his college days.

But for hardcore Tebow fans, "Through My Eyes" offers an exciting look into the life of one of the most highly recognizable college athletes of all time. And for those waiting to see what he can do at the next level, there's always the chance Tebow writes another book in 23 more years — when he will be just 46 years old.

UFC on Versus 4 Bonuses: Cheick Kongo Knockout of Pat Barry Wins $50,000

Matt Mitrione's three-punch knockout of Christian Morecraft looked like a sure-fire bonus winner. But Cheick Kongo had a little something to say about that.

Kongo's amazing comeback win over Pat Barry in the main event of UFC on Versus 4 on Sunday night earned him Knockout of the Night honors. Joining him with $50,000 bonus checks were Joe Lauzon, Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz.

UFC president Dana White announced the bonus winners via Twitter following the promotion's Pittsburgh debut, which took place at the Consol Energy Center.

Kongo's knockout is already being talked about as perhaps the biggest comeback in UFC history. Barry rocked Kongo, knocking him down and pouncing to land several more shots. Referee Dan Miragliotta jumped in and nearly waved the fight off, but pulled back when he saw Kongo was attempting to stand up. Moments later, Kongo hit Barry with a pair of rights, the second of which put Barry's lights out.

Lauzon made quick work of Curt Warburton on the preliminary card with a first-round kimura submission, just 1:58 into the frame. The Submission of the Night bonus is Lauzon's fifth straight post-fight bonus award and sixth in seven fights.

And in another prelim fight, Oliveira submitted Lentz with a second-round rear-naked choke. But it was a back-and-forth first round that likely earned it Fight of the Night honors. Lentz fended off multiple submission attempts from Oliveira in the first round, and the two traded kicks and knees on the feet. Lentz nearly went out from an Oliveira guillotine, but survived and landed a guillotine of his own, though he couldn't finish it.

That fight, though, was controversial thanks to an illegal knee to a downed Lentz that was missed by the referee. With Lentz's right knee down, Oliveira, who had been throwing knees in the second round and landing with regularity, threw one that connected to Lentz's head - and likely did enough damage to help lead to Oliveira's fight-ending choke. Though the fight is a submission win for Oliveira on the books now, Joe Rogan announced in the cage following the bout that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission will review the fight, specifically the knee incident, and could overturn Oliveira's victory to a no contest.

TUF 13 Champ Tony Ferguson Back to Lightweight, Fights Aaron Riley at UFC 135

Tony Ferguson, who won Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" earlier this month, already has his next fight.

Ferguson, who beat Ramsey Nijem at the TUF 13 Finale in Las Vegas on June 4 with a first-round knockout, will face Aaron Riley in a lightweight bout at UFC 135 on Sept. 24 in Denver. The UFC announced the fight booking on Twitter on Monday night.

Ferguson (11-2, 1-0 UFC) has won four straight fights, including his UFC debut victory over Nijem, which also netted him a $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus to go along with his guaranteed UFC contract. That fight was at welterweight. Against Riley (30-12-1, 3-4 UFC), Ferguson will return to the lightweight division.

On Season 13 of TUF, Ferguson fought for coach Brock Lesnar's team. The three wins Ferguson had in the TUF house to reach the live finale were all knockouts or TKOs. Those those three fights are not official, if counted he has seven straight TKO or KO victories. After taping for the season finished, Ferguson trained at Lesnar's Death Clutch camp in Minnesota to prepare for his fight with Nijem.

Riley has been out of action for more than a year, since a unanimous decision win over Joe Brammer at UFC 114 in May 2010. Riley, an Indiana native, was expected to return at UFC 119 in Indianapolis last September, but pulled out of his fight with Pat Audinwood with an injury. When he returns in September, it will be after a 16-month layoff.

Riley, whose primary training home is with Greg Jackson's camp in Albuquerque, N.M., is in his third stint with the UFC. He was one-and-done with losses to Robbie Lawler at UFC 37 and Spencer Fisher at Fight Night 3. Since returning at UFC 91, Riley has gone 3-2, but hasn't put together consecutive wins. His three wins have all been by unanimous decision.

UFC 135 will take place at the Pepsi Center in Denver. It will be the promotion's first trip to Colorado since the first UFC on Versus event in March 2010, which took place in the north Denver suburb of Broomfield. The UFC hasn't been to Denver proper since UFC: The Ultimate Ultimate in December 1995. UFC 1 and UFC 2 also took place in Denver.

UFC 135 is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones, making his first defense, and former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Also on the card, Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes will face former lightweight title challenger Diego Sanchez.

The Titans have hired Devin Bonik as an assistant to head coach Mike Munchak. Alex Marvez of FOX Sports first reported the news.

Bonik's job is a non-coaching position. His duties are expected to include preparing the team's practice schedule and football calendar, as well as working on scouting for future opponents.

Legursky's handiness helps him stick in Pittsburgh

When Steelers C-OG Doug Legursky ponders a season that began with him as a reserve and ended with him starting in Super Bowl XLV, he thinks of the wide range of perspective he received.

"I've seen every angle you can approach a game from," he said. "… I guess out of anything, that's the most valuable thing."

Legursky's versatility and readiness were put to the test multiple times a season ago, and never more so than when the Steelers needed him most. He got the call in the Super Bowl in place of the injured Maurkice Pouncey, whom he relieved early in the AFC title game after the star rookie suffered a high ankle sprain.

How the 6-1, 315-pound Legursky would fare vs. imposing Packers NT B.J. Raji was a matter of much speculation entering the game, what with Legursky to make his first-ever start in the middle and the 337-pound Raji emerging as a star late last season, but Raji didn't record a tackle in Green Bay's win, and Legursky came away "satisfied" with the way he played individually on a nonetheless disappointing day overall.

In the regular season, Legursky started four games, all at right guard, in place of the injured Trai Essex. With Pouncey the surefire starter at center, Legursky's best shot at competing for a starting spot this season could be at guard, though whether that happens could be tied to whether the Steelers bring in someone else who can play center, as Legursky and Pouncey are the only two centers on the roster.

"I'm going in there and battling to be a starter," Legursky said of his outlook.

It took two years for the 25-year-old Legursky, who went undrafted out of Marshall, to work his way onto the Steelers' roster. Twice Pittsburgh released him. "That was tough times, but I fought through that," he said.

Now, he has developed into a well-rounded player. In addition to center and guard, he also has lined up as a blocking back, something he enjoys.

His handiness is his calling card. He has shown, he said, that he can "go in there and contribute in a blink of an eye where we can win football games."

DT Thomas is a priority for Broncos to re-sign

With reports circulating that unsigned NFL players with four or more years of service will become unrestricted free agent under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Broncos now face a bigger risk of losing DT Marcus Thomas. We hear the team remains hopeful of bringing Thomas back for the 2011 campaign, but it might have to pay more than expected for the 25-year-old. Thomas played in all 16 games last season, making two starts in the Broncos' 3-4 defensive alignment, and could see more opportunities as the franchise switches to a 4-3 scheme. The team released DTs Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan prior to the lockout, leaving Kevin Vickerson as the lone defensive tackle on the roster with legitimate playing experience. With an added need for more D-line help as the Broncos switch to a four-man front, and the fact that the team failed to address the need through the draft, one PFW insider predicts that the Broncos could sign multiple free-agent defensive tackles, including Thomas, as soon as the lockout is lifted.

Bengals hope Moch can harness gifts at OLB spot

Bengals third-round pick Dontay Moch will be transitioning from defensive end, where he starred at Nevada, to linebacker. However, he doesn't completely lack for experience at the position.

"He's got some, not a great deal of reps at it, but he has game reps," Nevada defensive coordinator Andy Buh told PFW, noting that Moch had lined up at linebacker in all of the Wolfpack's games in 2010.

Moch, who was timed at 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and posted a vertical leap of 42 inches, will be used as a situational pass rusher and on special teams as he tries to master the LB position, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said on draft weekend. Buh, who is also Nevada's linebackers coach, believes Moch's speed and explosiveness can immediately create matchup problems on the next level when he lines up as a pass rusher.

"The faster you can get the ball out of a quarterback's hands, the better for a defense," Buh said. "That element you're going to have right away."

One of the keys for Moch as he learns to play linebacker will be getting more comfortable playing off the line of scrimmage, Buh said. However, the Nevada defensive coordinator said there's no doubt Moch has the ability to play the position in the NFL.

"He's got a lot of freakish talents that if they're further developed, he could really be a weapon," Buh said.
