Carl Froch on Arthur Abraham: 'I Could Have Done 25 Rounds'

England's Carl Froch may have turned in a career-defining performance on Saturday night during a Showtime televised fight from the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. There, Froch easily out-boxed Germany's former middleweight (160 pounds) titlist Arthur Abraham in a super middleweight (168 pounds) bout to regain the WBC belt he had lost in April to Denmark's WBA champion Mikkel Kessler.

So dominant was Froch that over the three cards of the ringside judges, the Englishman lost only one of 36 rounds, this, to improve to 27-1, with 20 knockouts as Abraham slipped to 31-2, with 25 stoppages.

In victory, Froch gained the No. 2 seed behind WBA belt-holder Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KOs) and a berth into the semifinals of Showtime's Super Six Super Middleweight World Boxing Classic, as well as the right to face third seeded former world champion Glen Johnson (51-14-1, 35 KOs) in 2011 as Ward meets the fourth seeded Abraham.

Froch is the only man to have beaten current WBC light heavyweight king Jean Pascal (26-1, 16 KOs), a winner of five straight who will put his crown on the line in a Dec. 18 defense against the legendary Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs). In this Q&A with FanHouse, taken at 5 a.m. from Helsinki only a few hours after his clash with Abraham, Froch discussed his performance and the prospects of facing Johnson.

Mangini wants Delhomme to cut down on mistakes

Browns head coach Eric Mangini held off on naming QB Jake Delhomme his starter for Sunday's game at Miami, saying he wanted to study the Dolphins before making a decision, and Mangini indicated that backup Seneca Wallace could merit consideration for playing time, too.

Delhomme, making his first start since Week One, completed 24-of-35 passes for 245 yards in the Browns' 24-23 win over Carolina Sunday. However, he also threw two interceptions, the second of which was returned for a touchdown by Panthers LCB Captain Munnerlyn.

On Monday, Mangini praised Delhomme's leadership and credited him for helping the Browns move the ball well against a Panthers defense capable of causing offenses some "problems," as the head coach put it. However, of Delhomme's turnovers, Mangini noted, "What you want to do is eliminate those mistakes that become gigantic in the scheme of things.”

Delhomme got the start Sunday with Colt McCoy missing the game because of a high ankle sprain. Mangini indicated it was unclear whether McCoy would be available for the Miami game, though he expressed hope he would be.

Wallace, who's made four starts this season, hasn't played since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week Five. Of Wallace, Mangini said: "Seneca will always be a part of the discussion. He’s done a great job when he’s been in there. Just something that I’m going to think through and make a decision on.”

The PFW spin

Delhomme has thrown more interceptions (six) in 2½ games than Wallace and McCoy have combined to throw in 8½ games (five). Two of his interceptions have been returned for scores, and a third allowed the Buccaneers, trailing 14-3, to get in position to score a touchdown that cut Cleveland's lead to four at halftime.

Mangini took pains to talk about the good things Delhomme does, but turnovers continue to be a major worry for the veteran quarterback, who's thrown 24 interceptions in his last 14 regular-season appearances.

"You take some high-risk chances and they hit sometimes and it's great," Mangini said Monday when asked why Delhomme is interception-prone. "Then you take some high-risk chances and they don't, and it's not very good. The thing that you're always trying to do is play the percentages. If it's not there, it's not there, and every play doesn't have to be extended.

"Sometimes the best thing to do is just throw it away. I had a year with someone who is a known chance taker (Brett Favre), so I've lived through that. There are some great positives, and then there are some plays that it doesn't work on. You just want to play the odds."

Asked about working with players to cut down on mistakes, Mangini made an interesting point about the importance of players knowing their limitations, and he also described what he saw in Delhomme's two interceptions:

“I think part of that is just understanding the plays you can make, the plays you can’t make and starting there. I think we all think that we can do the same things over time that we’ve done, and it doesn’t quite happen that way. You have just got to adjust some. I don’t think it’s a dramatic adjustment, but we do have to adjust some to make sure that the volumes of decisions are really good decisions.

"I’d say that the first pick that he threw, I thought the linebacker (Jon Beason) made a really good play. I didn’t see him coming.

"Even on the second pick, I thought (Browns WR) Mohamed (Massaquoi) got grabbed pretty good when he was coming back down the stem, but you don’t want to go to that throw as late as we went to that throw. With that being said, Mohamed got pulled pretty good. I’m not making any excuses or anything like that, but there were things in both of those plays that when you look at it objectively and unemotionally, you understand it a little bit better. We need to be able to not put ourselves in that position.”

While the Browns' starting quarterback for Week 13 remains unclear, this much is certain: Delhomme simply can't make this many glaring mistakes and get many more chances to start, not with Wallace and McCoy playing well during his absence. Delhomme could very well start against the Dolphins — after all, he was the starter to begin the season, and he's played just 10 quarters this year — but he's going to need to take care of the ball better.

Jason Litzau Upsets Celestino Caballero

Elie Seckbach, the Embedded Correspondent, brings his exclusive video reporting to FanHouse. Check back regularly for more videos.

WBA super bantamweight (122 pounds) king Celestino Caballero (34-3, 23 KOs) of Panama rose to super featherweight (130 pounds), where he suffered a mild, upset loss to Jason Litzau (28-2, 21 KOs), the NABF titlist from St. Paul, Minn.

Litzau earned a split-decision victory over Caballero (pictured at right), winning, 97-93, and, 96-94, repspectively, on the cards of judges Glenn Trowbridge and Dave Moretti, with Al Lefkowitz calling it for Caballero, 96-94.

FanHouse was on hand to speak with Litzau at the MGM in Vegas as part of a Golden Boy Promotions main event that featured WBO interim lightweight (135 pounds) king Michael Katsidis (27-3, 22 KOs) losing by ninth-round knockout to WBO and WBA champion Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KOs).

Carl Froch Routs Arthur Abraham, Earns Semifinal With Glen Johnson

England's Carl Froch easily out-boxed Germany's Arthur Abraham in Saturday's Showtime televised super middleweight (168 pounds) bout at the Hartwall Arena, regaining by a lopsided, unanimous decision, the WBC belt he lost the same way to Denmark's former WBA king Mikkel Kessler in April.

Judges Oren Shellenberger and Max DeLuca each scored it a shutout, 120-109, for Froch, with Burt Clements awarding one round to Abraham by the score of 119-109.

"I'm not sure what happened. Nothing worked today. Everything that I planned to do did not work," said Abraham. "Nothing worked, he was the better man tonight, and he won."

Nicknamed "The Cobra," the 33-year-old Froch rose to 27-1, with 20 knockouts against Abraham (31-2, 25 KOs), a 30-year-old former middleweight (160 pounds) champion, as part of Group Stage No. 3 of Showtime's Super Middleweight World Boxing Classic tournament.

"It was a hard fight, but I made it look easy because of the tactics that I applied. But it was hard to stay focused and to concentrate and to do what I had to do to win," Froch told FanHouse during an exclusive interview from Finland, where it was 5 a.m. "I know that it looked to be easy, but that's because I made it look easy. But it was hard to make it easy, if you know what I mean."

Froch-Abraham was the first bout of Showtime's split-site double-header, with WBA titlist Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KOs) -- who dethroned Kessler -- making an out-of-the-tournament defense against Sakio Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs) from Ward's hometown of Oakland, Calif.

With wins over Kessler and Allan Green (29-2, 20 KOs), Ward already has secured a spot in the semifinals that are slated for early in 2011. Kessler withdrew from the tournament with an eye injury in August, and his replacement, Glen Johnson (51-14-1, 35 KOs) stopped Green in nine rounds on Nov. 6, eliminating Green from the field as well.

Johnson's stoppage of Green earned him three points in the tournament, tying him for the No. 2 seed with Abraham behind Ward's six points for the No. 1 seed, and vaulting Johnson above Froch, who had two points for the fourth seed in the standings.

But Froch now has four points in the standings, which moves him ahead of Abraham and Johnson with three points each. The tie-breaker came down to total scorecard points, which goes to Johnson with 1,021 compared to Abraham's 1,002.

That means Ward and Abraham meet in the semifinals, and Froch faces Johnson. Froch had beaten Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KOs) before losing to Kessler. Abraham had knocked out Jermain Taylor, who was replaced by Green after subsequently pulling out of the tournament, before losing by 11th-round disqualification to Dirrell.

"Glen Johnson is old school and he's been around the block a couple of times. He's an old, wise fox, and you've got to give him his respect.," said Froch . "He still knows what he's doing and he picks his punches nicely. He's a great, great fighter and you've got to give him his respect for what he's done."

Packers-Falcons fourth-quarter reflections

As I indicated what might happen in my pregame prediction for this game, Atlanta’s special teams ended up being the key factor in a gut-busting 20-17 Falcons victory courtesy of Matt Bryant’s 47-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining.

Green Bay’s special teams weren’t nearly as special on this afternoon, with an ill-advised facemask penalty by Matt Wilhelm after a nice return by Eric Weems helping to set up Bryant’s game-winning score. The Packers’ special teams had earlier been charged with a few costly flags.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan was as cool as a cucumber driving the Falcons into position for the winning score, as Atlanta remained true to form as arguably the league’s best fourth-quarter team.

Aaron Rodgers was every bit the equal of Rodgers down the stretch, delivering a 10-yard bullet to Jordy Nelson in the corner of the endzone to tie the game with just over a minute remaining. A shovel pass to James Jones on fourth down helped keep the Packers’ final TD drive alive, but in the end, Atlanta got the job done to extend its NFC-leading record to 9-2 and drop the Packers a game behind the Bears at 7-4 — at least temporarily.

Flashback: Recent Week 12 Browns performances

Take a quick stroll down memory lane with PFW for a recap of the Browns' Week 12 contests each of the last five seasons:

2009: A third-quarter rushing TD from QB Brady Quinn was all the Browns (1-10) could manage in a 16-7 loss to the Bengals. Quinn was ineffective through the air, throwing for just 100 yards. RB Jamal Lewis was the team's top rusher, accumulating 40 yards on 11 carries.

2008: Cleveland (4-7) was limited to a pair of Phil Dawson field goals in a 16-6 loss to the Texans. Quinn and QB Derek Anderson both saw time at quarterback. The two signal-callers combined to complete just 13-of-32 passes for 145 yards and three interceptions. WR Braylon Edwards caught five passes for 85 yards.

2007: A pair of Anderson touchdown passes helped the Browns (7-4) beat the Texans 27-17. TE Kellen Winslow hauled in 10 catches for 107 yards and a score. Edwards had the other touchdown grab and totaled four catches for 57 yards. The Browns had the ground game working, too, with Lewis rushing 29 times and for 134 yards and a score.

2006: The Browns (3-8) were held to 203 yards of total offense and just 51 yards on the ground in a 30-0 loss to Cincinnati. QB Charlie Frye had an awful day, throwing four interceptions in the loss.

2005:  Cleveland (4-7) was never able to get much going on offense in a 24-12 loss at Minnesota. RB Reuben Droughns finished with a game-high 73 yards on 19 carries and WR Dennis Northcutt caught the Browns' lone touchdown on a nine-yard strike from QB Trent Dilfer.

Bader Believes Flashy Jones May Tone Down Creative Style for UFC 126 Clash

Ryan Bader walked into the UFC with big hopes of his own to go with the expectations of others who saw a diamond in the rough. The former collegiate wrestling All-American has steadily improved and risen up the UFC light-heavyweight depth chart, first winning The Ultimate Fighter's season eight, before embarking on an octagon career that's seen him go 5-0, with big wins over Keith Jardine, and most recently, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

That victory put him on a collision course with another rising star, Jon Jones. The two will meet at UFC 126 in February 2011, and because the two are likely to be in the championship picture for years to come, it seems to be the type of matchup that at best might ignite a longtime rivalry, and at worst will launch one of the two squarely towards top contender status.

Andy Souwer Possibly Herniated Disc Before Loss to Toby Imada

Andy Souwer's first loss in over four years in the Shoot Boxing ring to new-comer Toby Imada may have come with good reason as he revealed post-fight that he carried a possibly severe back injury into Tuesday's S-Cup semi-final bout.

Team Souwer's personal physician is yet to perform a full diagnosis on the three-time S-Cup and two-time K-1 MAX champion but suspects that Souwer suffered a herniated disc in his quarter final KO victory over WMC Welterweight Champion Bovy Sor Audomsorn.

"(I had back pain) in the first round in the first fight. I didn't know what exactly the problem was or what the reason was that I had the pain. I don't want to make excuses but I think it was a big reason why I was not able to fight my own game (against Imada). I'm not saying that I lost because of an injury but I can tell you that I didn't even warm up because of the pain," Souwer revealed in a post fight interview.

Portis' Redskins career might be over

The Redskins placed RB Clinton Portis on injured reserve, and it's very possible that he might not play for the team again. This is the case despite the fact that head coach Mike Shanahan said, "I don't think there's any question (Portis can still play). He's got strong will. He's got that inner drive that most people don't have." While Portis can run effectively when he's healthy (he looked good before leaving the Week 11 game early) and is an excellent pass protector, he just can't be counted on to stay healthy. This is the bottom line. The Redskins would consider bringing him back at a highly discounted rate, but they would want plenty of options at the RB position otherwise. Portis only would be an insurance policy if he did return, and there's really no guarantee at all he'll want to be viewed — or paid — as that. Keiland Williams gives great effort, and Ryan Torain has some natural running skills, but it's likely that the future franchise back currently isn't on the team's roster.

Three-and-out with Bears DE Henry Melton

Second-year veteran Henry Melton earned a spot in the rotation at defensive end this season after spending all of last year on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The 2009 fourth-round pick has made a sack in each of the past two games and he has 13 tackles through the first 10 games. PFW caught up with Melton this week and asked him when things started to click for him this season and how to go about slowing down Eagles QB Michael Vick.

You seem to be getting more recognition for your play than you were earlier in the season. Are things just starting to click for you or do you feel like you've been clicking all season long?

Melton: "I've been doing pretty good throughout the season, but the only thing that really stands out for a defensive lineman is sacks. I get a couple sacks and people are starting to notice what I've been doing out there. We've all been working hard all season long and they're just going to keep coming."

What's the key to slowing down Michael Vick when he tries to break away and make plays with his legs?

Melton: "It's going to be fun. I've been watching Michael Vick and playing with him on my game system since I was younger. Now I get a chance to corral the guy and keep him contained."

There's a high school game being played at Soldier Field on Friday. Do you guys hope they tear up the turf so the field will be sloppy and you can slow down Vick?

Melton: "It's going to be great. It's going to be cold. It's going to be a little wet. It's going to be messy and hopefully that does slow him down."

Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast

Pat Fitzmaurice is addicted to competitive cooking shows ("Top Chef," "Chopped," Hell's Kitchen," etc.), and he also loves to eat. Since he isn't much of a cook, he's channeling his chef obsession into Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast, a regular column featuring an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Bon appétit.

Appetizer: Cheese and crackers, summer sausage, veggie platter

Before we roll up our sleeves and attack this hearty pre-feast platter, let us pause and give thanks for the bounty of fantasy football, which keeps us so wildly entertained even in our most trying seasons. Let us also give thanks for the NFL, the greatest of all professional sports leagues, which we'll miss terribly next fall if labor-management Armageddon comes to pass.

Please allow me to offer thanks for some other blessings:

I'm thankful for the competitors in all of my fantasy football leagues — a wonderful bunch of friends and characters whose company I enjoy tremendously.

I'm thankful for the NFL Network, which keeps me informed and entertained throughout the year. If I could only watch one TV channel for the rest of my life, this would probably be the one.

I'm thankful for DirecTV, with its NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL Short Cuts. Enough said.

I'm thankful for Antonio Gates, who almost single-handedly kept one of my teams above .500 until the rest of my squad was finally able to chip in once Gates got hurt.

I'm thankful for Matt Ryan, who has given two of my teams admirable consistency at the QB position.

I'm thankful for Roddy White, a true superstar who does nice things for his fantasy teams week after week.

I'm thankful for my wife and children, who make me almost as happy as Roddy White does. But seriously, thank you, Heidi, Callie and Ben, for giving me endless joy and for dealing with an unhinged husband and father every Sunday during the NFL season.

I'm thankful for Jamaal Charles, an electrifying player who's been my MVP in a league where Charles' lights-out yardage totals trump his lack of touchdowns.

I'm thankful for Mike Wallace and his penchant for providing the big play whenever my team seems to need one.

I'm thankful for Dan Carpenter and his titanium foot.

I'm thankful for the Buccaneers' Mike Williams, the best preseason call I've made in a couple of years.

And finally, I'm thankful for you, dear readers. Thanks for being here, and thanks for all the nice notes you've dropped into my in-box over the course of the season.

Salad: Jell-O salad

Ah, the Jell-O salad. It's not just a classic Thanksgiving dish; it's a big shimmering slab of Americana. You have to appreciate any salad that wobbles.

And while we're on the subject of wobbly things, let's talk briefly about how the Giants' offense will deal with the absence of Hakeem Nicks for the next several weeks.

Nicks has compartment syndrome in his right leg, and it's expected to keep him out until at least Week 15, possibly longer. The Giants could more easily survive the temporary loss of Nicks if their No. 2 receiver, Steve Smith, were healthy, but Smith is expected to be out until at least Week 13 with a pectoral injury.

The good news for Eli Manning & Associates is that the Giants' schedule is littered with iffy pass defenses over the next few weeks. Next up are home games against the Jaguars and Redskins, who rank 28th and 29th, (dis)respectfully, against the pass. Then comes a Week 14 road trip to Minnesota, where the Vikings may be in winter hibernation by then. Minnesota ranks 15th against the pass, but if you watched the Vikings-Packers game last week, you know that it's possible to do good business against the Vikings' DBs.

Thing is, Manning tends to forces passes even when he has a full complement of receivers. Now he's down to one pretty good receiver (Mario Manningham) and a couple of guys who were out of the league just a few weeks ago (Derek Hagan and Michael Clayton), with good reason. Manning has thrown 16 interceptions this season, and he's been picked off eight times in his last four games. If you're in a league that penalizes interceptions, beware: It's hard to see Manning as any less of a turnover liability when he has so many receivers hurt. The only good news on that front is that the Giants may try to run the ball a lot more while Nicks and Smith are out, but that would obviously hurt Manning owners in other ways.

Manningham probably gains some short-term fantasy value, but I'd be reluctant to overstate the boost he'll get. He's going to get more defensive attention, and he hasn't had to be a No. 1 receiver since his days at the University of Michigan (although he handled it pretty well in Ann Arbor). I can't recommend either Hagan or Clayton. They're not NFL-caliber receivers, and while one of them might stumble into a touchdown or two, neither is a good investment. But I do like the prospects of TE Kevin Boss for the next few weeks. The Giants will have no choice but to get him more involved in the passing game.

The guy who could really get a fantasy boost from all of this is Brandon Jacobs. He's moving back into the starting lineup, ostensibly because of Ahmad Bradshaw's fumbling problem. But it's also a signal that the Giants want to re-ignite the power running game that used to serve them so well  now that their WR corps has taken a huge hit. And even though Bradshaw is being benched, I think he still maintains most of his fantasy value. The Giants need his speed and pass-catching ability and can't afford to let him collect dust on the sideline.

Entrée: Turkey with all the trimmings

The perfectly cooked turkey? It's golden-brown on the outside, the meat is moist, and it doesn't need any gravy, just a little bit of salt. The perfectly disappointing fantasy football turkey? You draft him highly or pay a premium for him at auction, he lets you down week after week, and he teases you by leading you to believe that changes to his personal ecosystem will coax out his dormant ability.

Hello, Randy Moss. Welcome to Thanksgiving dinner. How are your giblets?

Moss is the turkey of the year — a bigger turkey than any of the frozen Butterballs you'll find at the grocery store. The frozen form of Moss has left a great many of his fantasy owners out in the cold this year.

Back in August and early September — fantasy draft season — Moss was the consensus No. 2 receiver behind Andre Johnson. (I ranked him several spots lower than that, but never mind.)

It's hard to survive the sort of hit you take when you spend such a high pick on a player who lays the sort of egg that Moss has dropped this season. You'd actually have been better off with a highly drafted superstar who sustained a season-ending injury in Week One (e.g., Tom Brady in 2008). Then you could at least go about the business of finding a replacement, and it would still be possible to put a productive player into that spot. Many Moss owners have just kept throwing that moody mope into their lineups every week, hoping Moss will snap out of his trance and start using his Hall of Fame talent.

You're a turkey, Randy Moss. There isn't a platter or a gravy boat big enough for you.

Some other notable turkeys of the 2010 season:

Vincent Jackson — Just when he'd established himself as one of the better receivers in the league, a league-imposed suspension and a contract snit wiped out nearly an entire season in what should be the prime of his career. His return could still help some fantasy owners, but for many it's too late.

Shonn Greene — One touchdown? It's hard to believe that Greene was a top-10 running back on some preseason draft boards. And just when the Jets were starting to put more faith in him, he lost a critical fumble last week, jump-starting a Houston comeback in a game the Jets barely won, thanks to a last-minute miracle.

Mike Sims-Walker — In honor of Sims-Walker, Webster's New World Dictionary now hyphenates the word "in-consistency."

Laurence Maroney — When this guy was a freshman at the University of Minnesota, I thought he had a chance to someday wind up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Maroney isn't quite a Moss-level waste of talent, but he's not that far off.

Chad Henne — The Dolphins added Brandon Marshall in the offseason. Davone Bess, Brian Hartline and Anthony Fasano are all capable pass catchers. Miami has two solid running backs, and OLT Jake Long is one of the best blind-side protectors in the business. This season hasn't just been a flop for Henne, it's been a belly flop off the 10-meter platform.

Ryan Mathews — I realize he's been hurt, but what a colossal rookie disappointment.

Cowboys' running backs — Dallas ranks 29th in rushing and is tied for last in rushing TDs with three. Marion Barber looks like he's done, Felix Jones has been disappointing, and Tashard Choice can't find his way out of the doghouse.

Brett Favre — An ignominious end to a Hall of Fame career. Time to hit the bricks, Brett.

Jay Cutler — An interception waiting to happen. (But at least he has a sunny personality.)

Marshawn Lynch — "Beast mode," eh? In six games with the Seahawks, he's surpassed 50 rushing yards only once. You'll find fiercer beasts lapping up milk out of a saucer.

Beanie Wells — I'd offer a longer comment on him, but I just sprained two of my typing fingers.

Dessert: Pumpkin pie a la mode

Oh, man, I'm stuffed. I couldn't possibly ... well, OK, maybe just a little slice. Sure, I'll take some ice cream with that.

One final thought to conclude this feast:

Every year at about this time, I like to look at the rosters of the best teams in my leagues and see which players they tend to have in common. When I went through this little exercise earlier in the week, two names kept popping up repeatedly on the rosters of top-drawer teams: Darren McFadden and Dwayne Bowe.

A checklist for fantasy football success would include these items:

Hit on your top picks. It's hard to win a championship when your first- and second-rounders don't at least live up to their lofty draft position.

Avoid busts. It's nearly impossible to recover from a Randy Moss-caliber disaster.

Unearth hidden gems: Some of my competitors didn't know anything about Tampa Bay's Mike Williams when I drafted him. He's been a rock-solid starter for me. I was also lucky enough to hit on Keiland Williams in the late stages of a 22-round draft. He's playing an important role for me down the home stretch. Hitting on just one or two sleeper picks can pay off big-time.

Manage your roster shrewdly: Improve your talent level via trades and waiver claims, and make good lineup decisions.

Get lucky. You can't control Lady Luck, but injuries can kill a fantasy team, and so can the misfortune of leading your league in the points-against category.

But getting back to McFadden and Bowe, I think those two represent perhaps the most important item on the to-do list for successful fantasy teams: Find the quantum-leapers.

On most preseason draft boards, Bowe fell somewhere between No. 25 and No. 40 at wide receiver, and McFadden was in about the same range at running back. Now they're both top-10 at their positions, possibly even top-five. Both guys had flashed star ability in the past. Bowe's potential was evident when he was a rookie in 2007, and McFadden has a Heisman Trophy on display in his den. Both were coming off disappointing, injury-marred 2009 campaigns.

Remember these guys for 2011, and make note of players with similar profiles. At this time next season, we could be praising fantasy owners shrewd enough to have drafted Beanie Wells, Shonn Greene or Mike Sims-Walker, all of whom appear on the turkey list above, but all of whom fit the Bowe-McFadden success profile.

Hey, stranger things have happened.

Herschel Walker Off Strikeforce Card Due to Injury

NFL star turned mixed martial arts fighter Herschel Walker has been forced to withdraw from his second pro MMA bout due to a cut suffered in training.

Walker (1-0) was scheduled to face Scott Carson (4-1) at next weekend's Strikeforce event in St. Louis, however after recently suffering a cut under his eye, the organization decided to pull him off the card.

MMA Weekly first reported the news, and MMA Fighting confirmed it with Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz.

"I feel terrible about this,'' Walker stated in a press release. "I know things like this happen in all sports, but I had trained very hard and was excited to be returning to the cage again. I hope to fight again as soon as the cut heals.''

Not Fired -> Fired

Just an update on that last post: Gerald Harris was indeed fired! I guess that just goes to show you that even a 3-1 record with two KOTN awards won't save you during the current purge period.

They Said It: week of Nov. 22

Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, acknowledging that he has discussed with MLB Ray Lewis the possibility of limiting Lewis' snaps in an effort to extend his career, as quoted in the Baltimore Sun: "He's humble enough to say, 'The time is going to come,' and he also is humble enough to admit that he won't be the first one to recognize it, that I'll be the first one to recognize it as the coach. Now, whether we agree exactly at that point in time … but let's just say it's five years from now. Maybe it's when he's 40 years old we have to have that conversation. We'll probably have a little fight, and I might lose at first. But ultimately, I think he'll be willing to cut down on the number of snaps and keep playing and extend his career and help the team any way he can. That's just who Ray is." Added Harbaugh: "He's not going to easily admit that he's not the best player on the field. And right now, if I tried to make that case, it'd be an impossible case to make because he's playing so well."

Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, who had a verbal altercation with QB Vince Young in the locker room following Sunday's overtime loss to the Redskins, quoted in The Tennessean when asked if he is frustrated with his QB: "All I've done here since Vince has walked through the door is try to help him be to the best player he can be and stood behind him and defended him from the get-go, so there's no frustration." Added Fisher: "My focus is on this football team. He's not going to play anymore games for us this year because of the injury. We can deal with all that when the season is over."

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Greg Olson, discussing the maturation process of QB Josh Freeman in his second season, as quoted in the St. Petersburg Times: "It was his willingness and desire to come in on off days and come in on vacation to get his work done in the offseason. He wants to be a great player, and that's half the battle. He doesn't want to just be good; he wants to be great. He wants to be in Tampa his entire career and be the face of the franchise. He's taken on that challenge and taken on that responsibility." Added Olson: "He wants to study the Peytons and the Bradys and the Breeses. Those are the guys he's looking at. He's not looking at the average quarterback or the quarterbacks who came out in his class. He doesn't care about those guys. He wants to be the best."

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, quoted on TwinCities.com describing interim head coach Leslie Frazier: "He's got great football smarts and players can relate to him and vice versa. He has a certain vibe and energy that everyone can feel when they're around him. When he speaks, guys perk up and tune in."

Chargers QB Philip Rivers, quoted in the St. Petersburg Times following his club's 35-14 rout of the Broncos on Monday night: "This was the most complete game we've played in all three phases. We are in a lot of ways in playoff football already. You almost can't afford a step back at this point."

Monday, Nov. 22, 2010

Jets head coach Rex Ryan, quoted in the New York Post after his team's third consecutive come-from-behind victory, this time a 30-27 triumph over the Texans: "We keep finding ways to win, and that's what championship teams do. If I have to apologize for every week I will — all the way to the Super Bowl."

Raiders DT Richard Seymour, telling his side of the story after he was ejected from Sunday's game for punching Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, as quoted in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "I just turned around and he just ran upon me quick, and it was a natural reaction. There was a lot of stuff going on, and you have to protect yourself, but it is still no excuse." Added Seymour: "I want to apologize to my teammates. You never want to do anything to hurt the team. That's first and foremost."

Texans S Bernard Pollard, sharing his frustration after the Houston defense surrendered another late fourth-quarter lead, as quoted by The Associated Press: "This is ridiculous. We should not be leaving this place with a loss. All we had to do was play perfect for 49 seconds. How in God's name can we not get that done?"

Colts QB Peyton Manning, quoted on wsbt.com taking full blame for the interception he threw late in the fourth quarter in the red zone that ended the Colts' comeback bid and sealed a 31-28 victory for the Patriots: "It was just a poor throw and its really sickening. No excuses. If you have the opportunity to do it and you don't, then it's disappointing and I take the responsibility." Manning added: "We did a good job until the end. Had a chance to win it and it's just sickening that we didn't have a chance to extend the game."

Vikings QB Brett Favre, discussing what he plans to do next after his team fell to 3-7 following an embarrassing 31-3 defeat at the hands of the Packers, as quoted on TwinCities.com: "I'm just gonna try to go home, as tough as it may be, digest what has happened, not only today but in the last few weeks, come in tomorrow and kind of re-evaluate things." Added Favre: "I'd like to finish the season differently than today. There's still some hope. I don't want to sit here and tell you I'd love to finish the season and then go out and lose 31-3. I want us to somehow turn this around. We, us, this team, we all have to play better, me included. I don't want to finish it the way we've played up to this point."
