UFC 129: Rory MacDonald Hands Nate Diaz His Second Straight Loss

Rory MacDonald slams Nate Diaz at UFC 129.In a very impressive showing for a young fighter, Rory MacDonald earned the biggest victory of his mixed martial arts career, dominating Nate Diaz at UFC 129.

The fight was a blowout; the judges scored it 30-26, 30-27 and 30-26 in favor of MacDonald. At age 21, MacDonald looks tremendous. He really poured it on in the third round and slammed Diaz hard to the ground three times, using wrestling-style belly-to-back suplexes to send Diaz crashing to the canvas.

Browns No. 7 pick scouting report: OG-OT Jason Pinkston, Pittsburgh

The Browns traded back into Round Five, sending a pair of sixth-round picks to Minnesota, to draft Pittsburgh OG-OT Jason Pinkston, who will start out at guard, head coach Pat Shurmur said Saturday. Pinkston (6-3 3/8, 300) could have a better shot contributing at right guard, where second-year pro Shawn Lauvao could have the edge to start but is not a cinch to win the job.

Personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki's scouting report on Pinkston in PFW's 2011 Draft Preview book follows:

Notes: Cousin, Todd, was a receiver with the Eagles (2000-05). A highly recruited two-way lineman out of Pennsylvania, Jason also played basketball as a prep. As a true freshman in 2006, spent fall camp at defensive tackle before moving to offensive tackle in September. On the season, saw action as a reserve/“jumbo” personnel blocker in seven games. In ’07, started the first three contests at right tackle before suffering a left shoulder injury and undergoing season-ending surgery (was granted a medical hardship). Returned to start all 12 games played at left tackle in ’08, but missed the Sun Bowl against Oregon State because of a right shoulder injury. Started all 26 games at left tackle 2009-10. Team captain. Did not lift at the Senior Bowl because of a left shoulder injury.

Positives: Carries his weight well — is fairly light on his feet to shuffle and slide in pass protection. Runs his feet on contact and can create some push with sheer mass. Bends his knees and plays on his feet.

Negatives: Lacks the agility to handle elite speed on the left side — can be leveraged and tossed aside. Hands too often go wide of the target. Hits and falls off blocks — not a finisher and does not sustain. Intermittent effort and intensity. Average instincts — can be overloaded by pressure and late to switch off blocks. Mild work habits. Weight has tended to fluctuate.

Summary: A big, thick-bodied, finesse college left tackle who projects best to the right side in the pros. Has shown steady improvement and has matured, but might take some time to acclimate to the NFL.

NFL projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.

Texans had a plan, stuck to it

I heard the disappointment all the way from Houston when the Texans made the — bad draft word here — "safe pick" with Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt.

I felt their fans' frustration when the next pick was a pass rusher (Brooks Reed) and not a cornerback.

But as we always see in the draft, you need to look at the full picture to look at how a team handled its picks.

That's why the Texans, who found great value in the bottom of Round Two with Miami (Fla.) CB Brandon Harris, did well for themselves on Thursday and Friday. They trusted their board and knew that they needed several picks to rebuild that defense.

Wade Phillips convinced GM Rick Smith to go for the hardest spots to fill first — left defensive end and pass rusher. Watt will shield Connor Barwin on the left side and crush opponents' strong-side run games, and Reed will bubble Mario Williams. How can you not like that arrangement?

On Reed, LB coach Reggie Herring said: "I think Day One when he comes in, we're expecting him to play. Whether he's a starter or not, that's up to him."

The fact that they landed Harris, a possible first-round pick, is just gravy. Harris and Kareem Jackson are both tough, physical corners who will be able to hand fight with receivers in the chuck zone and stick close to them with the pressure that this suddenly fierce front seven can provide.

"When you watch this kid play, he plays like a five- or six-year NFL vet," secondary coach Vance Joseph said. "His route recognition, his football IQ, was very, very high."

I really like the transformation of this team. Are they done yet? No, sir. But so far, they are finding building blocks.

Everyone talks about Phillips running a 3-4 defense, and he does. But on third downs they shift to a 4-3 under front, which opens up the possibilities. You can put Barwin and Williams at end and perhaps move Watt inside with Antonio Smith.

"I look to him to play at defensive end on first and second downs and maybe go inside on third downs, but that remains to be seen," Phillips said.

Perhaps we jumped the gun a bit on the Texans last year, but things are starting to fall in place for this team.

Bears No. 3 pick scouting report: S Chris Conte, California

The Bears added depth at safety in the third round, drafting California's Chris Conte, who was a late riser on draft boards during the evaluation process. Conte could help on special teams initially and eventually compete for the starting job at free safety. It's not yet clear if Danieal Manning will be back next year and Chris Harris is heading into the final year of his deal. Here is PFW draft expert Nolan Nawrocki's scouting report on Conte from the 2011 Draft Preview book:

Notes: Last name is pronounced "CON-tee." Safety-receiver out of Los Angeles but began as a cornerback at Cal. Played in all 13 games in 2007, starting three, and recorded 32 tackles, zero pass breakups and zero interceptions with a tackle for loss. Played in 12 games in ’08 (one start) and tallied 28-7-1 with a tackle for loss. Broke his thumb against Stanford and did not play against Washington. Played in all 13 games (one start) and managed 25-1-0. Transitioned to strong safety in ’10 and produced 72-3-1 with two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a blocked kick in 12 starts. Was a 21-year-old senior.

Positives: Good body length to match up with receivers. Runs well in a straight line. Plays with a sense of urgency and is quick to support — closes fast. Takes good angles in pursuit. Aggressive, dependable wrap tackler — plays full speed ahead. Has some upside and a frame to carry more weight.

Negatives: Short arms. Builds up speed and is not sudden. Is leggy, pedals tall and sticks some when changing direction. Average flexibility and lateral agility. Range is just average and is too often a step late getting over the top. Still developing positional instincts — is not anticipatory and does not show an understanding of route combinations. Not a punisher.

Summary:
Lacks starter-caliber burst and flexibility and has man-coverage limitations but tackles well and is athletic enough to make it as a fourth safety and core special-teams player.

NFL projection:
Priority free agent.

A stunning pick, but Mallett makes a ton of sense for Patriots

Raise your hand if you had the Patriots in your "which team will end the Ryan Mallett slide and take a chance on him" pool?

That's what I thought.

With their wealth of picks and Tom Brady turning 34 before the 2011 season begins, it wouldn't have been a surprise to see the Patriots take a quarterback. But it was certainly a stunning move by Bill Belichick to take the guy with arguably the most off-the-field concerns of any of the high-profile names in this draft — there was a reason the strongest arm was available at pick No. 74.

But this pick makes a whole lot of sense for New England.

Immediately, it doesn't impact the roster at all. Brian Hoyer will likely remain and the Pats will carry three quarterbacks. New England presents a good situation for Mallett, whose defensive and awkward Combine press conference helped contribute to the free fall of his draft stock. Brady and Belichick are a good duo to keep Mallett in line as a professional. Belichick showed last year when he suspended DE Brandon Deaderick for reportedly being late for meetings that he won't put up with immature behavior.

Expect Brady to take Mallett under his wing and help the cannon-armed QB to live up to his potential. Mallett will have plenty of time to get rid of his negative reputation without the pressure to compete for the starting job.

Worst-case scenario? Mallett becomes a bust and his character concerns are a legitimate problem. The team realizes he is a distraction and parts ways with him, knowing all they wasted was a third-round pick who was a backup anyway, as Brady still has a few more years left.

Best-case scenario? There are two. Mallett could develop for the next two years under Brady and Belichick and prove to be great trade value. If we learned anything in this draft, we learned how valuable the quarterback position is, and how many teams are still desperate for the franchise signalcaller. It would be a similar situation to Matt Cassel, and the Patriots could find Brady's heir apparent elsewhere.

The other best-case scenario? That Belichick did it again, stealing a franchise quarterback like he did with Brady. Mallett is to Brady what Brady was to Drew Bledsoe and becomes the Patriots' quarterback of the future, making a seamless transition when Brady's time in the league is done.

Teams want the Packers' situation — where Aaron Rodgers had a couple years to learn under future Hall of Famer Brett Favre with no pressure on him. Then, when the team handed Rodgers the reins, he delivers them a Super Bowl. And in the best-case scenario for Belichick and the Patriots, Mallett could be that guy.

The pick was a huge surprise, and if Mallett doesn't pan out, the Patriots would simply lose a backup third-round pick. Not a lot of harm done there.

And if it works? It would be the steal of the 2011 draft.

Pioli shows his smarts with Chiefs pick of Baldwin

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli comes from the Bill Belichick School of Drafting, which features a curriculum based on moving back to stockpile more picks and trusting the team's draft board instead of the popular consensus.

Pioli was the student at the school for many years, but he clearly has earned his diploma based on what he did Thursday night. The GM traded back, added an extra selection, and took a sleeper pick at the position his team needed help in most.

Originally picking 21st, the Chiefs decided to deal with the Browns for the 27th overall selection that Cleveland had acquired from the Falcons in the Julio Jones trade; they also picked up the Browns' third-round pick, No. 70 overall. With multiple positions of need and a good group of players still available, Pioli clearly believed that Kansas City could acquire a top talent while adding more depth later in the weekend.

Yet when the 27th pick was read by commissioner Roger Goodell, it wasn't the Chiefs. The Ravens — picking right before K.C. — allowed their time to elapse, passing on the pick and enabling the Chiefs to move up and select at No. 26. Once K.C. handed their card in, Pittsburgh WR Jonathan Baldwin was taken off the board and the Chiefs had a new big-play wideout coming to town.

Though some will wonder why the team opted against picking an offensive lineman or linebacker, two of the greatest needs of the team, there is no denying that K.C. had to acquire a pass catcher to complement the league's top-ranked running game. Dwayne Bowe was the only wide receiver to make more than 22 catches last season, and when he was double-teamed, the Chiefs had no chance to move the ball through the air. Baldwin, who left school following his junior season, has a solid combination of size (6-4 3/8, 228) and speed (4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine), making him the player of QB Matt Cassel's dreams.

There are questions of Baldwin's maturity and effort to do the little things, a reason many didn't have him pegged to go in Round One. However, those are issues the Belichick School doesn't worry about. Pioli and head coach Todd Haley clearly have done their homework on the Pitt receiver and believe his supreme talent outweighs any negatives he could bring to the team. Pioli has his diploma; picks like this will determine if he's in line to earn a PhD.

No deal yet, but Bears, Adams share mutual interest

Bears head coach Lovie Smith and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli spoke glowingly about DT Anthony Adams this week as Adams was honored with the Brian Piccolo Award, which goes to a veteran Bears player and a rookie — J'Marcus Webb this year — that best exemplify the courage, loyalty teamwork, dedication and sense of humor of the late Brian Piccolo. Adams even spoke like he would be playing for the Bears next season at the April 26 ceremony, but he's not under contract with the Bears in 2011. Adams will be an unrestricted free agent when free agency begins this offseason. It's clear the team wants to re-sign him, but it would appear that its best offer thus far left Adams unsatisfied — he turned down a contract extension during the season. Smith said the Bears would "let the (free-agency) process play out," when he was asked about re-signing Adams on Tuesday, and Adams was too classy to make any complaints in such a setting.

Cowboys want to lock up OLT Free

It certainly has been hard for Cowboys officials to watch WR Dez Bryant struggle off the field and not be in contact with him for guidance. But that hasn't been the only lockout-induced pangs of silence. The team says it has badly wanted to get on the horn with the agent for OLT Doug Free and keep the fifth-year free agent around a while longer. Free took some time to finally crack the starting lineup, but once he did so last season he was a revelation. Going into the season, Free was the biggest question, but he exited it as one of the few sure things going forward. And the Cowboys say they would like to keep it that way by signing him to a new contract. What is not clear is what kind of contract, because without a labor agreement we don't know whether he is an unrestricted or restricted free agent. If he's restricted, the two sides likely can wrangle for a year before they need to sign a long-term extension. But the risk is that Free plays even better and raises his price tag.

NFLPA tells players to show to work Tuesday

Following Judge Susan Nelson's ruling to end the lockout, former players union members sent out an e-mail Monday night telling its players to report to work on Tuesday morning, PFW has learned.

"Be advised," the e-mail reads, "any player  going to work tomorrow is doing so under the ruling that Judge Nelson rendered today.

"Judge Nelson's court order prevents the clubs from locking out players under contract, so they can show up for work. Unless and until the judge issues an order for a stay (delay of the injunction), the teams will be in violation of Judge Nelson's order if they don't allow access."

Already, reports of players planning to go to work on Tuesday have surfaced, with the Steelers' Ryan Clark saying he and a group of teammates plan to show up at the team facility.

One player on a different team told PFW on Monday that he and several of his teammates discussed the matter by e-mail and text message.

The NFL has appealed the decision and hopes to be granted a stay. The league held a conference call Monday night to discuss its options in the short term before the appeal is heard.

Three draft prospects test positive for marijuana

Pro Football Weekly has confirmed the Foxsports.com report that two potential top-50 draft prospects, Georgia OLB Justin Houston and Iowa DT Christian Ballard, both tested positive for marijuana at the Scouting Combine.

PFW also has learned that Florida OL Maurice Hurt, a later-round prospect, also has tested positive for the drug.

Rumors of Ballard's failure ran rampant last week but could not be confirmed until late Monday night. Several league sources told PFW recently that Ballard informed teams during the interview process that he suspected he might test positive.

Houston has been linked to several teams in the back end of the first round, including heavily to the Packers at No. 32.

PFW draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki believes both players' draft stock could be hurt and that there is a chance either one could slide to Round Three. NFL decision makers' concerns about habitual marijuana usage and testing positive again in the future might prevent teams from taking them in the first two rounds.

Hurt might not be drafted now, although it wasn't a guarantee he would before the positive test.

Draft Dose: Who needs a cornerback?

Elite cornerbacks can take the opposing team's top receiver out of the picture, limiting the quarterback's options and giving the defenders up front more time to make a play. But a below-average corner can be a defense's worst nightmare. Poor play at the position can prove extremely costly and usually winds up costing defenses a lot of yards. In the 31st installment of the Draft Dose series, PFW looks at five teams in need of a cornerback:

49ers

San Francisco does not have a shut-down corner on its roster and could be in the mix for LSU CB Patrick Peterson with the No. 7 selection in this year's draft. The 49ers spent $80 million on CB Nate Clements in 2007, but he has lost a step and is now better suited for more of a slot-type role. CB Shawntae Spencer is serviceable, but had a lot of breakdowns last season.

Texans

Houston finished at the bottom of the league in passing defense last season, surrendering 267.5 yards per game though the air. CB Kareem Jackson started all 16 games, but struggled at times and saw his playing time reduced late in the season. CB Glover Quin didn't live up to expectations after a strong rookie season and CB Jason Allen, who was claimed off waivers after being let go by the Dolphins, struggled with deep coverage. Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara could be available at No. 11.

Raiders

Even with Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha on the roster, Oakland was in need of a cornerback last year. Considering the Raiders are not expected to spend the money needed to keep their top player in town, it's safe to say a cornerback or two could be added. Stanford Routt started 15 games but was picked on plenty.

Steelers

The Steelers' top corner, Ike Taylor, is set to become a free agent and could leave Pittsburgh with a big hole to fill. The other starting cornerback, Bryant McFadden, played well in run support but has not been able to match up with elite receivers. CB William Gay is an effective No. 3, but the Steelers don't want to move him from that spot.

Eagles

Pro Bowl CB Asante Samuel was productive all season, but the play opposite him was another story. Ellis Hobbs' neck injury, which is expected to force him into retirement, left the team without a second dependable, every-down corner. CB Joselio Hanson played well as the nickel back but CB Dimitri Patterson was ineffective and 2010 fourth-rounder Trevard Lindley was a disappointment.

Giants' Reese: Sintim 'needs to grow up'

Easily the most interesting statement to come from Giants GM Jerry Reese, who is generally reserved when talking about his players, during the team's pre-draft press conference was the fact that he said he thought OLB Clint Sintim "needed to grow up."

The comment must be taken in context, of course, but there's no denying that Reese was demanding more from a player the Giants thought could run away with the starting SLB job last season. Sintim failed to grasp the position and spent another season toiling in relative obscurity.

Said Reese, "I think it is about growing up for him. I think he needs to grow up and play like a second-round player that we think he is and give us that value and step in there and show us that he can be a starter for us and play quality football for us."

It's clear that Reese would like one of his veteran linebackers to step up. That includes Sintim, Phillip Dillard and Adrian Tracy. Sintim might be the best fit for the position, but Tracy, a college defensive end, also has intriguing pass-rush skills and size. Tracy spent the entire season on injured reserve after tearing his ligaments in his elbow. Dillard probably fits best inside but was worked outside a bit in practices.

Although Reese said Sintim "really didn't get a shot" to prove himself, he lost the starting job to Keith Bulluck in training camp and later tore his ACL playing mostly special teams in 13 games.

"(Sintim) hasn't played a lot and he got injured," Reese said. "So that has hampered our evaluation of him. But we picked him in the second round [in 2009]. We expect this guy to be an impact player for us. And right now he hasn't been able to do that yet.

"He flashed a little bit as a rookie. But last year he didn't get to play a lot because he was injured. So we are hoping that he can come back from his injury and look like a second-round pick."

PFW's new draft database now live

Pro Football Weekly is pleased to announce the addition of its new NFL draft database, which is now available to explore on ProFootballWeekly.com.

The database contains PFW's detailed scouting reports, authored by respected analyst Nolan Nawrocki, on more than 400 draft-eligible players. Each report contains a player's background, strengths, weaknesses, a summary and projection on where he will be selected.

Nawrocki's exclusive player rankings are another feature of the new database. More than 900 players are graded and ranked, and the rankings can be sorted by name, position, school or grade.

During the NFL draft — which will be held April 28-30 — be sure to visit our Draft Tracker, which will keep up with all the picks as they are made, and offer links to the scouting reports of the players as they are selected.

These new features on ProFootballWeekly.com can easily be found by mousing over the "Draft" tab on the main navigation bar on our home page. A drop-down menu containing three choices — Prospects, Rankings, Draft Tracker — will appear, allowing you to jump directly to your desired section.

Judge Nelson lifts lockout; NFL appeals

Updated 9:51 p.m. ET

Federal Judge Susan Richard Nelson has ruled for the players in the "Tom Brady et al vs. NFL" antitrust suit, lifting the lockout.

Nelson did not rule a stay — which would have temporarily suspended her ruling.

In the conclusion of her finding, Judge Nelson wrote: "the public ramifications of this dispute exceed the abstract principles of the antitrust laws, as professional football involves many layers of tangible economic impact, ranging from broadcast revenues down to concessions sales.

"And, of course, the public interest represented by the fans of professional football — who have a strong investment in the 2011 season — is an intangible interest that weighs against the lockout. In short, this particular employment dispute is far from a purely private argument over compensation.

"The Brady Plaintiffs have made a strong showing that allowing the League to continue their "lockout" is presently inflicting, and will continue to inflict, irreparable harm upon them, particularly when weighed against the lack of any real injury that would be imposed on the NFL by issuing the preliminary injunction.

"The public interest favors the enforcement of the antitrust laws and their underlying pro-competition policy, and the countervailing labor-law policy favoring collective bargaining is no longer implicated here. Finally, the Brady Plaintiff's 'fair chance of success' on the merits of the lockout — which again does not require that success is 'likely' or even greater than fifty percent — shifts the balance decisively in favor of issuing the injunction against the lockout."

The NFL filed its motion to stay in Nelson's court on Monday night, per the New York Times' Judy Battista. If that motion is denied, they will ask the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to grant a stay to keep the lockout in place while the league appeals Nelson's ruling on the injunction. NFL owners filed their appeal to the judge's ruling on Monday evening, according to reports.

"We will promptly seek a stay from Judge Nelson pending an expedited appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals," the NFL said in a statement released after the ruling. "We believe that federal law bars injunctions in labor disputes. We are confident that the Eighth Circuit will agree. But we also believe that this dispute will inevitably end with a collective bargaining agreement, which would be in the best interests of players, clubs and fans. We can reach a fair agreement only if we continue negotiations toward that goal."

If the owners lose in their quest to have a stay ordered pending an appeal, the 2011 league year would begin, and player movement could commence. League owners discussed the ruling on a conference call Monday night for more than 45 minutes, according to Pro Football Talk.

NFLPA executive director and co-class counsel DeMaurice Smith said after the ruling: "I'm happy for our players and for our fans. Today, those who love football are winners."

Giants DE Osi Umenyiora, a plaintiff in the case, said: "Today's ruling is a win for the players and for the fans that want to see a full NFL season in 2011. The lockout is bad for everyone and players will continue to fight it. We hope that this will bring us one step closer to playing the game we love."

Some NFL players are expected to show up at their team practice facilites on Tuesday morning now that the lockout has been lifted. Steelers SS Ryan Clark told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he was going to arrive early in the day.

"I'm trying to get guys there at 8 o'clock, to get out there and show we want to be here, we want too be part of this organization and we want to be on the field," Clark said on Monday, per the Post-Gazette report. "We want to show this is not a litigation process but an attempt to have football in 2011."

NFLPA attorney Jim Quinn told USA Today: "By law, we have to give it a day or so to let the dust settle and see if a stay gets in place and then we'll decide what happens next."

The Way We See It

So, what does all of this mean? PFW publisher Hub Arkush answers some questions on the topic.

Can teams and players now have contact?

Yes. Judge Nelson has ruled that the lockout violates the antitrust laws. The owners were certainly prepared for this ruling and have been instructed by their negotiating team to do nothing until a decision has been reached on whether or not Judge Nelson's ruling will be stayed. It would not be surprising if the NFLPA is instructing players to show up for work Tuesday morning, and short of a decision already in place staying Judge Nelson's ruling, the owners would have no choice but to allow players currently under contract into team facilities.

Why did the judge wait until the end of the business day on Monday to issue her ruling?

It is fair to speculate that was done intentionally to allow the owners a chance to be at the appellate court first thing Tuesday morning and create the smallest window for any individual owner to break ranks or any business to be transacted prior to a ruling by the appellate court of a stay.

Can NFL teams currently sign free agents?

Technically, the answer is yes. And to go a step further, for the moment, no franchise tags, transition tags or restrictions on unsigned free agents exist. It is almost certain, however, that the owners have prepared for this possibility and will refrain from breaking ranks at least for the first 48-72 hours, until they have some sense of whether or not Judge Nelson's ruling will remain in force.

If the appellate court agrees to hear the NFL's appeal, how quickly could we expect a decision?

At the moment, that is secondary to both the owners' and players' main concern. The court will almost certainly rule in the next 24-72 hours on whether or not Judge Nelson's ruling will be stayed. The owners will proceed with their appeal regardless of whether or not Judge Nelson's ruling is stayed. But those hearings and the appellate court's eventual decision is a matter of at least weeks, and more likely months, away as new motions need to be prepared by both sides and eventually heard by the appellate court before a decision can be reached.

If the owners are not successful getting a stay of Judge Nelson's ruling from the appellate court, the NFL will be forced to abandon its lockout strategy and reopen for business based on a set of rules of their choosing, which have almost certainly been prepared so as not to increase any liability they might have stemming from the players' antitrust lawsuit. It is almost certain if Judge Nelson's ruling is not stayed, that the league will begin operations again under the 2010 league rules — which required a free agent to have at least six accrued seasons to be eligible for unrestricted free agency, and would acknowledge franchise tags and tendered offers to restricted free agents, which while open to debate in the antitrust proceedings, most likely wouldn't increase the owners' potential liability because they were agreed to in the last Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players.

Randy Couture sounds like he's made up his mind

It's been several days since the Randy Couture Wheel of Retirement stopped spinning and it looks like it's gonna stay on 'Retire.' So I guess we can say with some certainty that his fight next weekend is definitely maybe going to be his last MMA fight ever. Possibly. He's done a slew of media interviews recently and in every one he's stayed firm: that's all, folks!

?I think that was one of the things that I struggled with, is that I am healthy as ever. I feel great, I absolutely have the ability to continue to compete at this level. [But] I feel like I've stretched it and pushed it and don't want to wait until I have those [injury/health] issues to think about and to weigh in to training camp or weigh in to a fight,? he explains.

?I think that's part of going out on my terms, is to [just] go. I have a whole bunch of other things that I enjoy doing in my life and I don't want to wait until I have that injury to have doctors telling me, ?look, you can't fight anymore.?

?I know that's going to affect all the other things I like to do. I like to hunt, I like to ride my bike, I like to do a lot of other things and I'm healthy and can enjoy the rest of my life right now. I don't want to wait too long [before retiring.]?

There's also the realization that he's always one Hulk Smash away from being considered washed up, which is no way to end a career. Thanks for the life lesson, Professor Iceman!

"I felt horrible for Chuck. Everybody was chatting about him retiring. He's been such an amazing champion and he had such an aura around him. To have him drop the last couple in the way he did, it just sucked. The way the fans talked about him, it was very disappointing. I felt bad for him. There had to be an end. I'm not crazy. I'm not nuts. I realize it's not going to last forever. So why not take control and do it on my terms? When I want to do it and not because I've been knocked out the last three times and nobody wants to see me get beat up again? I never want to have that conversation with anybody."

It probably wasn't that much fun the first time around, after he got knocked out twice by (oh the irony) Chuck Liddell in under a year. That kicked off Randy's first retirement, which lasted ... 13 months. I'm figuring this time he might actually manage to stay away for nearly two years!

Jon Jones Injured; Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis Booked for UFC 133

The grudge match will have to wait. So will Jon Jones' first title defense.

A hand injury has knocked the new UFC light-heavyweight champion out of action for the time being, leaving the UFC without a main event for its upcoming return to Philadelphia in August. As a result, the promotion has booked a fight pitting Jones' scheduled opponent Rashad Evans against rising star Phil Davis.

The UFC 133 fight was confirmed by the UFC on Monday morning. It was first reported by the Canadian Press.

Panthers' Smith has cleared out locker, suite

Prior to NFL teams locking out players from their facilities, Panthers WR Steve Smith cleared out his locker of all his personal belongings at Bank of America Stadium, sources told PFW.

Smith's locker had several personal effects, including his All-Pro award from 2005, the majority of which had remained intact for several years. He also cleared out his luxury suite at the stadium the same day. As part of Smith's contract, he receives use of one of the Panthers' boxes for home games. It had been adorned with photos of Smith throughout his football career.

Although the NFL currently sits in a lockout, with no veteran player movement allowed, the Panthers could trade Smith when regular transactions are allowed. The team has undergone a series of changes since the end of last season's 2-14 campaign, including hiring new head coach Ron Rivera to replace John Fox.

A youth movement began in earnest last season in Fox's final season, and the Panthers were one of the youngest clubs in the NFL. The Panthers own the No. 1 pick in Thursday's draft, but GM Marty Hurney has said in recent interviews the team has not made its mind up about which player it will select.

Smith and Rivera met shortly after the coach's hiring, and the two talked to hash out some issues. Rivera told PFW at the Indianapolis Scouting Combine that he "appreciated Smith's honesty with things" and vowed to "be straight" with the four-time Pro Bowl receiver about his future in Carolina when the league's CBA issues are resolved.

Smith is out of town on vacation and was not available for comment. Sources have indicated that Smith previously has asked for a trade in the past.

His house outside of Charlotte has been on the market since last year, and the asking price recently dropped. Sources told PFW at the time it went on the market that Smith wanted a neighborhood with more children in the area so that his own kids had more interaction with children their own age.

Last season was one of Smith's most trying. He caught only 46 passes for 554 yards and two touchdowns — the lowest full-season totals since his rookie year, when he was primarily a returner — as the team's quarterbacks struggled mightily and the Panthers ranked dead last in the NFL in passing yards.

His current contract runs through 2012. Smith has base salaries of $7 million in 2011 and $7.75 million in '12, with salary-cap figures of $9.96 million and $10.71 the next two seasons respectively.

Prince Amukamara's draft diary, Part Nine

Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara is talking to PFW's Kevin Fishbain for a weekly diary leading up to the draft. In this week's entry, Prince talks about giving back to the community while at Nebraska and who will be accompanying him to the draft.

On some of the community outreach programs he was involved in at Nebraska:
When I got to college, my faith in Jesus just took off. I've developed a genuine concern for others. Just going and making those people's day, it did a lot for me. I learned a lot about autism. I visited an autism clinic and went to hospitals and stuff like that. I'm sure it means a lot to them, but it means a lot to me too.

On what he'll miss most from college a few days after attending Nebraska's 2011 spring game:
The tunnel walk. It's like a red carpet. Walking through there with your teammates about to go to war, it's your moment to get loose and do anything. My friends and I liked to dance and stuff. After you get out from the tunnel walk, you go through the gates and see a huge sea of red. It's such a surreal moment.

On a story on ESPN.com that said: "The bottom line is that (Jimmy) Smith and (Brandon) Harris both played better than Amukamara against top-level competition in college."
(Laughs). Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. That's just one guy. I'm confident in my abilities. I know what I can do. I feel like I'm one of the best corners in the draft. I feel I am the best cover corner and the most physical in this draft. I know Jimmy Smith and Brandon Harris; they are both good at what they do, too.

On all the reports about the character of prospects heading into the draft:
I understand that teams are making a huge investment so they have to do their due diligence. Just going through college, especially being a college athlete, you're looked at through a fish bowl — a lot of stuff is going to come your way. It's just how you handle it. It's very hard, it just takes discipline.

On how he maintained good character during his time at Nebraska:
I met with our team chaplain weekly. I've struggled through stuff through college — by no means am I this perfect person. I feel like I'm not only representing myself, I'm representing my family and my university. My dad always told me a good name is better than riches so I took that to heart.

On who he invited to join him in New York for the draft:
My parents. And I felt that coaches were a huge part of raising you, being there since Day One and always wanting the best for you. I invited all my high school coaches — the head coaches for track, basketball and football, and my Pop Warner coaches. Everyone that has had a big influence on me and who I am today, including our team chaplain here at Nebraska and another mentor — I feel like this is a credit to them, too, for investing so much in me.
