Del Pilar's Mailbag: Saturday edition

The fantasy playoffs are coming around, and questions dealing with depth are good to see, as well as the whom-to-start questions. Don't forget Pro Football Weekly's rankings, which have been proven against the competition.

Which two RBs do I start this week? F. Gore, McGahee or D. Sproles? Thanks.

- Maurice via email

I like Frank Gore's history against the Rams and I like the way Willis McGahee is running when healthy, and the Vikings are just a middle-of-the-road defense against the run. I like Sproles, but you don't list if it's PPR, and when asking whether to start Sproles, that's probably the most important question. Go with the two who are the primary backs and will see 20-plus touches.

I'm in a PPR league with a playoff spot on the line. I need an RB2 and a flex. My options are R. Helu, W. McGahee, DeAngelo Williams, M. Tolbert, and Nate Washington. Sure would appreciate some help. Thanks!

- Steve via email

I would go with DeAngelo Williams, who has a great matchup against one of the worst defenses against opposing running backs. He's set up to have a great game. I would then go with Willis McGahee against the Vikings based on his touches, how he's been playing when healthy and the offensive schemes of the Broncos. I like Helu, but he faces the Jets. Mike Tolbert takes a backseat to Ryan Mathews, and Nate Washington has had one great week since Kenny Britt went down early in the season. He's a complete hit-or-miss.

Help me choose two WRs from Hakeem Nicks, A.J. Green and Laurent Robinson. Green has a tough matchup; Nicks has a nice matchup, but Cruz is getting all the big plays for the Giants. Also, should I pick up another TE to platoon with Fred Davis for the playoff run? B. Celek, J. Gresham, J. Ballard and B. Pettigrew are available. Thank you.

- John via email

Against the Packers, Nicks is worth starting, as it could be a shootout, and don't underestimate QB Eli Manning's ability and desire to compete with an A-list QB like Aaron Rodgers. I like the opportunities Nicks will see. Laurent Robinson is the next bet because it doesn't look like Miles Austin will play. If you don't like Nicks, then go with Green as he's shown he can play against anyone. I would stick with Nicks, though.

I like the idea of the platoon if waiver-wire access ends after the playoffs start. Brent Celek hasn't quit on his team, unlike DeSean Jackson, and the QBs may lean on him even more now that D-Jax has become unreliable and Jeremy Maclin is out. Riley Cooper has done OK, but he had a bad game with some key drops regardless of his yardage.

Pick two please (I'm hearing A. Bradshaw and K. Smith will both play): Andre Johnson, Ahmad Bradshaw and Kevin Smith.

- Ben via email

Tough call, but right now I would go with Kevin Smith, who will be a game-day decision and managed to have a good Thursday practice and did not experience the soreness that could have indicated a more serious injury. He was held out Friday as a precaution. There's no word on Ahmad Bradshaw's foot, and we won't know anything until later Saturday, at the earliest. I would hesitate to go right back to him. The early word on T.J. Yates is that he has the arm to be able to get the ball to Johnson. There's no arguing Bradshaw's the better play if he were healthy, but that's what injuries can do.

Brandon Pettigrew vs. Jason Witten. Normally I would never think of benching Witten over any tight end but his production has been alternative rather than consistent. And New Orleans usually gives up more points to TEs than Arizona, although AZ will be facing a better TE. Thoughts?

- afrothunder via email

That's not a bad call, as Witten doesn't have a great history against the Cardinals and they're in the top 10 in least fantasy points allowed to opposing TEs the past month. You're right, the Saints are in the bottom 10. I hate to say this: I would go with Jason Witten, but I like your bold strategy. If you're a conservative player, go with Witten, and if you're willing to go high-risk, high-reward, then go with Pettigrew. You would be in the minority if you did that, but if it pans out, it's the type of story that legends are made of.

This is a make-or-break week. What two WRs do I start out of Steve Smith, Laurent Robinson, Antonio Brown, and Stevie Johnson? Thanks.

- Nick via email

I would go with Antonio Brown. He's posting numbers like a No. 1 fantasy receiver. Then it's tough from there, but I believe you've got to go with the hot hand in Laurent Robinson with Miles Austin out.
