Pro football still No. 1 to Americans

Pro Football is the most popular sport in the United States and the favorite game of nearly three in 10 fans who follow sports in the country, according to a poll released by Harris Interactive on Tuesday.

Thirty-one percent of those polled picked pro football as their favorite sport in 2010, a four percent decrease from the previous year's poll. Baseball finished in second place at 17 percent, a one percent rise from 2009. College football was the only other sport to reach double-digit figures at 12 percent, the same total as the year before.

The poll also shows how well the sports have done in the past 25 years. In 1985, pro football was the favorite sport of 24 percent of American fans, showing a seven percent gain in that span, the largest of any sport listed. Baseball saw the biggest drop-off, as 23 percent of fans listed the National Pastime as their favorite in '85, a six percent difference to this year.

The way we see it

While it is no surprise that pro football is the most popular sport in the nation, it is interesting to see that it lost ground to baseball in 2010, based on this data. While the sport still holds a 14 percent lead over its closest competitor, the NFL should be concerned about fans' attention moving elsewhere, especially with a lockout looming that could turn more followers away from the game.
