The Browns traded back into Round Five, sending a pair of sixth-round picks to Minnesota, to draft Pittsburgh OG-OT Jason Pinkston, who will start out at guard, head coach Pat Shurmur said Saturday. Pinkston (6-3 3/8, 300) could have a better shot contributing at right guard, where second-year pro Shawn Lauvao could have the edge to start but is not a cinch to win the job.
Personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki's scouting report on Pinkston in PFW's 2011 Draft Preview book follows:
Notes: Cousin, Todd, was a receiver with the Eagles (2000-05). A highly recruited two-way lineman out of Pennsylvania, Jason also played basketball as a prep. As a true freshman in 2006, spent fall camp at defensive tackle before moving to offensive tackle in September. On the season, saw action as a reserve/“jumbo” personnel blocker in seven games. In ’07, started the first three contests at right tackle before suffering a left shoulder injury and undergoing season-ending surgery (was granted a medical hardship). Returned to start all 12 games played at left tackle in ’08, but missed the Sun Bowl against Oregon State because of a right shoulder injury. Started all 26 games at left tackle 2009-10. Team captain. Did not lift at the Senior Bowl because of a left shoulder injury.
Positives: Carries his weight well — is fairly light on his feet to shuffle and slide in pass protection. Runs his feet on contact and can create some push with sheer mass. Bends his knees and plays on his feet.
Negatives: Lacks the agility to handle elite speed on the left side — can be leveraged and tossed aside. Hands too often go wide of the target. Hits and falls off blocks — not a finisher and does not sustain. Intermittent effort and intensity. Average instincts — can be overloaded by pressure and late to switch off blocks. Mild work habits. Weight has tended to fluctuate.
Summary: A big, thick-bodied, finesse college left tackle who projects best to the right side in the pros. Has shown steady improvement and has matured, but might take some time to acclimate to the NFL.
NFL projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.
