Looky looky, a new MMA movie set to come out in September. Plot recap: Sleazy slimy promoter with the #1 fighter puts together a 16 man MMA tournament for a whackload of money. Brendan is a high school teacher who's getting fucked by his bank on his mortgage (RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES!). He turns to his alcoholic dad and war veteran brother to train him as his wife with a tooooight ass gets all 'When you gonna give up your dreams!' on him. Things get more complicated as the tournament forces Brendan and his brother to fight. War heroes! Drunken dad reunion! Family conflict! Mixed martial arts!
MMA peeps involved include Nate Marquardt, Yves Edwards, Anthony Johnson, Erik Apple, Roan Carneiro, flower smelling TUF injuree Roman Mitichyan, Josh Rosenthal, Punk from Tapout, Fight Science dude Amir Perets, and author Sam Sheridan playing a male prostitute with seven different kinds of herpes. Unfortunately, these guys mostly have tiny roles while one of the main parts was given to Kurt Angle. Which I guess is fitting since he's already nailed the whole fake fighter thing.
The movie is directed and written by the same guy who did that cheesy predictable hockey movie Miracle, which is good because you know he can string together a coherent uplifting sports movie. Plus it looks like they're going to treat MMA like a real sport and not some strange dungeon fighting thing where everyone dies and money is made by mysterious shadowy figures betting millions on the internets (aka the Hector Echavarria way). It's like Hollywood is starting to move past it's 80's fantasyland perception of ultimate fighting or something!
