Duerson had same brain disease as other deceased players

A study conducted by Boston University showed that former NFL player Dave Duerson had brain damage when he committed suicide in February.

Duerson, who shot himself in the chest for the specific reason of saving his brain from harm so that it could be studied following his death, developed the same trauma-induced disease that have been found in 20 other deceased football players.

The Boston University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, which released the study on Monday, found that Duerson had chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The condition is an incurable disease that is linked to memory loss, dementia and depression. It can only be detected after a brain autopsy. The Center has done several studies on the disease.

Duerson was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams during his 10-year career. In his suicide note to his family, the former player wrote "Please, see that my brain is given to the N.F.L.'s brain bank."
