Lions' Cherilus has Week One as goal

The Lions' offseason, even with the lockout, has been filled with good news on the injury front. QB Matthew Stafford has been metaphorically breaking fingers with his passes after a new upper-body routine has added strength and helped heal his injured shoulder. RB Jahvid Best has recovered nicely from his two turf toe injuries last season and is said to be in good form.

But perhaps the most surprising recovery has been that of ORT Gosder Cherilus, who had microfracture surgery in December. Considered to have an eight-to-12-month recovery, Cherilus was a surprise participant in the Lions' informal workouts in last week and claims to be rearing to go. He'll know more after meeting with his doctor in June, but Cherilus — who had his best season last year — thinks he can return by Week One.

The Lions widely were expected to draft an offensive tackle last month but passed until taking quite green Johnny Culbreath in Round Seven. Jason Fox is capable of filling in at right tackle, as is Corey Hilliard, who started down the stretch, if they bring him back. But it appears as if Cherilus will try to give it a go without missing any more games.
