The Packers used their final pick to select Arizona State DT Lawrence Guy. The seventh-round pick provides depth behind NT B.J. Raji, who played fantastic last year. What follows is a scouting breakdown of Guy by PFW draft expert Nolan Nawrocki:
Notes: Highly recruited prospect out of Nevada totaled 210 tackles and 31 sacks his final two high school seasons before choosing the Sun Devils over offers from Oklahoma, Michigan and Nebraska, among others. As a true freshman in 2008, played all 12 games (started the final eight) and tallied 44 tackles, 10 for loss and two sacks with a 22-yard fumble recovery score. Started all 11 games in which he played in '09, recording 37-7-4½ with one forced fumble. Did not play in the season opener (biceps). Started all 12 games in '10, posting 41-6-1½ with two batted passes. Will be a 21-year-old rookie.
Positives: Has ideal size and large hands. Good movement skills — runs well for a 300-pounder. Very active — chases plays and has good range. Flashes disruptive ability — barges into gaps and pushes upfield to generate pressure. Versatile to play multiple spots. Experienced, three-year starter.
Negatives: Average athletic ability, eyes and instincts. Late to locate and find the ball. Gets knocked around and does not play with power or violence. Does not feel pressure and can do a better job protecting his legs. Lets his pads rise and exposes too much of his frame. Limited pass rusher. Has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia and could take extra time wrapping his head around a complex NFL playbook. Did not interview well at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Summary: Persevered through learning disabilities to become a functional student-athlete and has a well-proportioned NFL body with enough athletic ability to warrant consideration as a three-technique or five-technique. That said, his measurables are more intriguing than his tape, he could be a project and the finished product might not be worth the wait.
NFL projection: Third- to fourth-round pick.
