The market will not be rich with options, but we hear the Panthers will take a serious look at free-agent quarterbacks if and when free agency begins this offseason.
Carolina will be looking for a veteran willing to embrace a placeholder role. While the Panthers have said they're open to having first overall pick Cam Newton play right away, opening the season with a veteran starter would give Newton more time to prepare and learn from the sidelines. Some evaluators believe he's going to need that as he transitions from a spread system to a more complicated pro-style offense. Kerry Collins and Marc Bulger will both be available in free agency and would fit the mold. GM Marty Hurney could also explore trade opportunities.
Jimmy Clausen said after Newton was selected that he spoke with Hurney and was told that he's wanted on the team and will get a chance to compete, but Clausen likely will be the third-string quarterback if the team adds a veteran.
