Dick Ebersol, the chief of NBC Sports, announced his resignation from the network on Thursday.
The New York Times first reported that Ebersol resigned after he couldn't agree to a new contract with Comcast, which recently purchased NBC. As the head of the network's sports division since 1989, Ebersol oversaw the airing of several sports, and was instrumental in NBC acquiring the rights to "Sunday Night Football" in 2006.
Mark Lazarus, who is currently the president of NBC Sports Cable Group, will become the new chairman of the NBC Sports Group.
