The players' unions for the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball filed a brief Friday with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Minneapolis, saying the NFL owners' lockout of its players lays out "vitally important issues" for all of the members of their players' associations. The major professional leagues' unions argue that the athletes they represent have short careers, and the loss of even part of a season causes irreparable personal and professional harm.
That is in lockstep with the NFL players' association's assertion regarding the lockout, in which there is no free agency and the ability to sign new contracts, get treatment for injuries under team care or work out with coaches at a team facility is prohibited.
U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson lifted the lockout briefly, for four days, before an appeals court allowed the lockout to resume until a full appeal about whether it is legal can be heard. That will take place June 3 in St. Louis.
In their brief Friday, the players' associations said, "there is no off-season in professional sports — only the portion of the work year during which no games are played." The brief argues that the offseason brings the opportunity to change cities or teams, possibly altering one's career.
