Cason's struggles could lead to benching

The last time the Chargers didn't like the play of a former first-round cornerback, they traded Antonio Cromartie to the Jets. While it doesn't seem like the team will go to those extremes with RCB Antoine Cason quite yet, we hear there is a strong chance the fourth-year pro will lose his starting job because of a lack of production.

Cason was beaten for three touchdowns in Week Seven by Jets WR Plaxico Burress and has been struggling all season long in jamming opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage. Though the issues are seen as fixable, the team is very high on second-round rookie Marcus Gilchrist and could move him into the starting lineup in Cason's place. Cason then would become the nickel corner. Gilchrist, a former safety, is a more physical player and could be a better fit against strong receivers outside.
