New Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton worked on filling his staff on Thursday by hiring one of his former players, Deshea Townsend, to be the team's assistant defensive backs coach.
Townsend played cornerback in the NFL for 13 seasons, 12 of them with the Steelers. He played in eight games in 2010 with the Colts. In his career, Townsend hauled in 21 interceptions and recorded 15½ sacks while scoring three touchdowns.
According to PFW correspondent Kent Somers, Bengals assistant Louie Cioffi could be the Cardinals' new secondary coach.
The way we see it
Townsend is making a quick jump from playing to coaching, as Horton looks to improve the league's 29th-ranked defense that was also 23rd against the pass. There is some talent in the unit — SS Adrian Wilson and CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie — but it struggled in 2010.
