NFL, NFLPA agree to keep mediation private

The NFL and NFLPA released a joint statement on Friday, the first of seven consecutive days the two sides would meet.

"George Cohen, the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, has requested, and both sides have agreed, that the NFL Players Association and the NFL refrain from making any public comments about any aspect of the mediation process. The Process began today under the direction of Mr. Cohen."

It was announced Thursday that Cohen would mediate the two sides as they work to form a new Collective Bargaining Agreement before March 3.

The way we see it

It had been a week since the two sides had met at the negotiation table, and reports fueled the rumor mill regarding what was reportedly discussed. It was leaked Thursday from the NFLPA conference call that the two sides will meet for seven consecutive days.

It's certainly a good sign that the two sides have negotiations scheduled and are at least agreeing on one thing — to keep the negotiations from the media. Now we will all continue to be in wait-and-see mode, but this is a positive that the sides are meeting, and hopefully getting down to business.
