Chael Sonnen Mellows Ahead of UFC 136, Still Says He's Better Than Anderson Silva

The last time we saw Chael Sonnen before a fight, calling him outspoken would have been a massive understatement.

Ahead of his UFC middleweight title fight against champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in August 2010, Sonnen was a whirlwind of controversial comments, outlandish outcries and, well, near lunacy.

Sonnen came closer than anyone before him in the UFC to stopping Silva, but his submission loss was followed by a suspension for elevated testosterone levels. And that was followed by a plea deal for money laundering in a mortgage fraud case. Is it possible that Sonnen has mellowed out?

Brian Stann, Sonnen's opponent at UFC 136 next Saturday in Houston, thinks it's a case of selective mellowing based on who Sonnen is fighting.

"I told everybody from the start I didn't think (the trash talk) was going to happen," Stann said Friday on a media call for the pay-per-view. "I said this a couple times. I believe Chael is very genuine when he says if he has a problem with somebody, he'll speak it. If he doesn't have a problem with somebody, he won't. You saw his fights against Nate Marquardt, Dan Miller and Yushin Okami, he didn't have anything to say about those guys. He spoke about the fight. So it wasn't surprising to me at all that didn't happen. And I wouldn't have taken it personally, anyway. I really think that our skill sets and the way that we fight has generated all the hype it needs."

When it comes to Stann, Sonnen (25-11-1, 4-4 UFC) has steered clear of any kind of trash talk. In fact, he'd actually prefer to not have to fight the war hero, who is on a three-fight winning streak. And he believes the same goes for the rest of the middleweight division.

"Nobody wants to fight Brian, but somebody's got to," Sonnen said. "Our paths have to cross. We're just in the same weight class, it's not that big of a pool and he keeps whipping everybody. If he quit beating everybody, I wouldn't have to fight him. But he decided to go out and become one of the top guys. I've done my part and put my time in and I'm up there too, so our paths have to cross."

With so much time off between fights, Sonnen said he's happy to be back on the job, but admitted there's no excitement that comes along with a task the likes of Stann (11-3, 5-2 UFC). It's possible the winner will get the next crack at Silva - a rematch for Sonnen, and the biggest fight of his career for Stann, the former WEC light heavyweight champion.

With Stann on a three-fight streak, all stoppages with a submission win over Mike Massenzio and convincing TKOs of Chris Leben and Jorge Santiago earlier this year, it's no wonder Sonnen won't use the word "excited" about his first fight in more than a year.

"I don't know that I ever look forward to (fighting)," Sonnen said. "I hear some guys say they're excited (to fight), and I always get jealous of those guys. I've never been excited to have to go fight another man. I'm not excited now. I'm happy to be part of it - I got put in timeout for a while, and I'm glad that's all over and behind me. But I go with a matter-of-fact approach - I'm not excited for the match. It's a bunch of emotions that get combined into one, and excitement isn't one of them."

A brasher Sonnen, circa Summer 2010, might have approached such a question differently. And it just might be possible that Sonnen's out-of-the-cage problems have him taking a different approach to how he portrays himself to the public. Possible.

"The happy part is, this is what I want to do and I got held out of it for a while," Sonnen said. "I've always been grateful for these opportunities, but I think I'm a little more grateful now. Appreciative would be a much stronger feeling that I'm having - to make up for the excitement."

Sonnen has even relaxed his stance on Silva - though make no mistake, a win over Stann and a possible rematch with his old nemesis would likely see him return to the Sonnen of old.

Sonnen said Silva has to be respected - but he still believes he's better than the champion, who beat Yushin Okami last month, whom Sonnen helped train for the title fight.

"It's getting harder and harder to deny he should be shown that appreciation," Sonnen said. "He ducked Okami for years, but he did finally get in there and he made it look easy. So I think you've got to look at that. If you're asking if I'd ever concede that Anderson's better than me, no. I would refer you to the tape (of our fight). I think he and I are vastly different and that I could come down a lot and still be ahead of him. I also think he ducks and dodges opponents constantly, but his wins and losses speak for themselves. The fact of the matter, whether I like to admit this or not, is he's done a better job than anybody, done a better job than me, and he is the champion.

"It doesn't mean I'm going to quit poking my finger in his chest, but at some point I think fairness needs to kick in, too, and you need to look at what he's done and tip your hat to him a little bit."

What Sonnen hopes for more than anything is a win over Stann, and a chance to let that finger poking start up once again.

Sonnen and Stann fight on the main card of UFC 136 on Oct. 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston. The main card is headlined by a pair of title fights - the lightweight title rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, and a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian.

For UFC Veteran Yves Edwards, Toughest Battle Is Within His Own Mind

Filed under:

Yves EdwardsThe week of a fight, the last place UFC lightweight Yves Edwards wants to be is in his own head. It's a scary place sometimes, and also a tough place to escape from.

"I obsess over the stupidest things you can imagine," Edwards said. "I will obsess over the color of towels in my bathroom, or what kind of soap they have [in the hotel]. I had this one soap this one time and that wasn't a great performance, so I can't use this soap again. It's stupid, and it's just a distraction."

With nearly 60 pro fights in a career that's spanned almost 14 years, at least Edwards has had plenty of practice in dealing with his own fight week neurosis. Now he knows how to manage it. For starters, he can bring his own soap. He can also rely on his friends, like Strikeforce welterweight Tyron Woodley, to keep him mentally occupied.

Otherwise, Edwards said, it can get out of hand in a hurry. For instance, say a certain friend is coming to see the fight. Then Edwards starts to think about how he's never won a fight with that guy in the audience. Maybe he's bad luck. Maybe he's cursed.

"But then, I don't want to tell my friends not to come see my fights, so I have to stay away from that stuff," said Edwards, who faces Rafaello Oliveira at UFC on Versus 6 this Saturday night.

"I can catch myself doing it a lot. Stopping it is the hard part. Common sense and rationalization -- I'm a pretty rational person when I'm not in this mode -- that kicks in a little bit and I realize that the color of my underwear has nothing to do with how hard I've prepared for this fight or how focused I am. But it's just the irrational part of my brain, that part kicks in first. I have to talk myself down from it sometimes."

At least Edwards has experience in his favor. Wednesday marks the ten-year anniversary of his UFC debut -- a losing effort against Matt Serra at UFC 33 -- and Saturday's fight comes just one day after his 35th birthday. To Edwards, doing the math on his career numbers and realizing just how long he's been at it comes as "kind of a surprise," he said.

"I still feel like I'm 26. ...The guy that was making his debut in the UFC, he didn't know half the things I know now."

But as Edwards prepares to take on Oliveira -- a Brazilian fighter who he actually trained alongside of and "traded a few secrets" with in the past -- he does so coming off a knockout loss to Sam Stout that UFC president Dana White called "one of the nastiest I've ever seen."

It might not be a must-win fight for Edwards, but 35-year-old fighters can't afford to take too many steps backwards, and he knows it.

"The thing is, nobody gets cut off a win," Edwards said. "Not unless you've done something and screwed up. That's my only concern, is going out there and winning, keeping my job, and keep moving up the ladder."

The fact that he went from a pay-per-view card at UFC 131 to the prelim portion of a UFC on Versus card doesn't worry him, he insisted, just like it doesn't matter that he knows Oliveira to be "a pretty nice guy."

"When it comes to the fight game that means absolutely nothing to me," he said. "... This fight could be behind a Wal-Mart. All I have to worry about is, that's the guy I'm fighting. That's all that matters."

That, and that he remembers not to obsess about the brand of soap in his hotel. After a week of battling himself, the fight should be a relief.

UFC Live 6 Main Event Breakdown: Dominick Cruz vs. Demetrious Johnson

Filed under:

It's been four years since a UFC championship has been defended on basic cable TV, a streak that will end on Saturday when bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz attempts to hold onto his belt and thwart the challenge of Demetrious Johnson.

The matchup, broadcast on Versus, likely boasts the speediest pair of fighters ever matched for a UFC title. Cruz is known for his fancy footwork and ability to weave in and out of striking distance, while the 5-foot-3 Johnson expertly navigates reach differentials with his own swift feet.

Cruz has been likened to Lyoto Machida in that he has an unconventional style that is relatively difficult to emulate and causes matchup difficulties. But apart from that similarity, their styles are actually quite different. While Machida tends to be very still, leans back out of punching range and waits to aggressively move in for a killshot, Cruz's success is built on his endless movement, flurries of activity and ability to seamlessly transition from standup to takedowns.

It's this unique set of skills that awaits Johnson as a challenge.

For at least part of it, Johnson is at least on paper, equipped. Much like Cruz, Johnson spent his high school years as a wrestler. That's shown offensively, as Johnson has successfully completed 74 percent of his takedowns, according to FightMetric.

Defensively, however, Johnson has had some difficulties. He's only stopped 46 percent of attempts against him. Given the frequency of Cruz's takedown tries (he's scored 31 takedowns in his last six fights), Johnson will have to do much better than that to give himself a chance to win.

On their feet, things get trickier. An interesting note about Cruz is that for all the accolades his striking receives, he's not a particularly accurate striker. In fact, he's below average when it comes to connection percentage, landing only 29 percent of his thrown strikes. That probably comes as a surprising statistic to many who constantly hear about Cruz's standup brilliance.

In reality, Cruz's striking success is based on volume and relentlessness above all else. Take his most recent title defense against Urijah Faber, for example. In the bout, Cruz out-landed Faber 97-53 overall. However, again, Cruz connected on just 39.4 percent of his strikes.

For all his activity, Cruz rarely offers opponents a chance to hit him in flush in return. Faber, for example, scored on just 32 percent of his shots. While Faber arguably landed the bigger shots, they were fewer and farther between, and Cruz's offensive aggression makes an impact in the minds of the judges.

We've seen a trend recently of opponents trying to engage Cruz in tight. Since he's not considered a power puncher, foes are willing to sit back, let the right-hander wade in towards them and fire back power shots as he steps into range. Both Faber and his Team Alpha Male teammate Joseph Benavidez employed that kind of strategy, often keying on his kicks.

For Johnson, it would be a bit trickier, because while he has the speed to employ it, he hasn't shown the power to make that kind of attack the right one for him. That plan tends to be a risky proposition. When Cruz attacks first, there will usually be at least 3-4 strikes coming, and you might only get to fire off one in return. That almost ensures you'll lose the flurry in the eyes of the judges (barring a knockdown or flush strike), and over the course of the round, those types of exchanges will add up in his favor, as they have over and over.

Johnson has so far in his UFC/WEC career flashed an impressive mix of striking accuracy and defense. He has successfully landed 51 percent of his strikes, and despite his usual reach disadvantage, he rarely gets hit. One interesting stat is that he only absorbs 0.98 strikes per minute, a number which would rank him No. 2 for best defense in the UFC if he had enough fights to qualify him for the leaderboard. By comparison, Cruz absorbs 1.75 strikes per minute.

Cruz is about a 5-to-1 favorite, and that number is a little too big for a fighter who goes to decisions so often. His game is well equipped to win either a striking, wrestling or ground battle, but he's never shown the ability to overwhelm a foe except in volume. Johnson is one of the few bantamweights in the world who may be faster than Cruz and can match his gas tank. Because of that, I expect this fight to be more competitive than the line indicates.

The key factor in this bout may not end up being speed or striking, but Cruz's takedown defense. Johnson's wrestling doesn't get a ton of notice, but since losing his WEC debut, he's scored 23 takedowns in four fights, successfully completing 74.1 percent of his tries. It was his wrestling that helped him win his two biggest fights, and we shouldn't expect him to abandon it now. Keeping Johnson at the end of his leg kicks will help Cruz in that regard, along with his natural gifts.

The wrestling game will stalemate at times, leading this fight to be decided standing. As usual, Cruz's flurries and pace will offer him an advantage there. If Johnson tries to be a counter-fighter, he'll suffer the same fate as Faber and the rest, caught up in the numbers game. If he comes forward, his chances are better, but crossing the distance will leave him open to counters. Johnson is going to have his moments, but fighting from range is Cruz's specialty, and that's where most of this fight will be decided. Cruz via decision.

Justin Edwards vs. John Maguire Added to UFC 138

Just 11 days after shutting down Wanderlei Silva prospect Jorge Lopez at UFC Fight Night 23, welterweight Justin Edwards accepted on Wednesday a fight against John Maguire at UFC 138 on Nov. 5 in Birmingham, England.

Edwards is a replacement for the injured James Head. Maguire is also a recent addition to the UFC 138 card, signing on last week to replace Mark Scanlon against Head.

Edwards (7-1), a contestant on season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter, lost his UFC debut in a split decision to Clay Harvison in June, but bounced back two weeks ago with a unanimous decision over Lopez, snapping the Team Wand fighter's 10-fight win streak.

Maguire (16-3) is UK-based submission fighter who will be making his UFC debut. Fighting out of the Tsunami Gym, he has held the Cage Rage UK and OMMAC titles.

UFC 138, headlined by the promotion's first five-round, non-title fight, Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz, will air on same-day, tape-delay on Spike TV.

Titans-Browns matchup of the day: Thursday

Here's a matchup to watch in Sunday's Titans-Browns game:

Tennessee run defense vs. Cleveland's running game

Browns RB Peyton Hillis returns to the starting lineup after missing Week Three with an illness. Hillis, who's rushed for 151 yards and a pair of TDs in 44 carries this season, figures to get the bulk of the work on Sunday, with Montario Hardesty also getting some work. Hardesty rushed for 67 yards on 14 carries vs. Miami and also caught three passes for 19 yards, including a fourth-down reception that kept alive what turned out to be Cleveland's game-winning drive.

"Montario is a great player and he did extremely well when he was out there. He's really smart and he can contribute," Hillis said Thursday. Referring to the importance of the performance, Hillis said: "You don't have to go out there and do it all on your own; you've got a guy behind you or in front of you that is just as capable of doing anything that you can do. That's big for me, it's big for our team and it gives us some depth."

The Browns primarily run up the middle and off the guards. The Titans have defended such rushes very well this season. No team has been tested more with middle runs, but opponents haven't been able to gain much ground this way, averaging just 3.13 yards on 46 attempts. The Titans' strength up the middle was apparent on their goal-line stand vs. Denver early in the fourth quarter last Sunday. The Broncos, leading 14-10, were stopped at the Tennessee one, with RB Willis McGahee gaining no yards on fourth down.

Veteran Shaun Smith (left tackle) and rookie Jurrell Casey (right tackle) start in the middle for the Titans, with Dave Ball (left) and Jason Jones (right) the ends. Sen'Derrick Marks and Karl Klug provide good depth at tackle, with Derrick Morgan and William Hayes capable reserve ends. Akeem Ayers (outside), Barrett Ruud (middle) and Will Witherspoon (outside) are the linebackers. Ayers, a rookie from UCLA, has impressed with his physicality.

Week Four fantasy tips: TEs

Texans jack-of-all-trades James Casey had quite the coming-out party in Week Four, catching five passes for 126 yards and a TD, which came on an incredible sprawling grab in the right endzone. Head coach Gary Kubiak loves employing Casey in a variety of ways — out of the backfield, in motion or split out wide, among others — and he displayed the soft hands and athleticism that should enable him to get more involved in the offense as the season progresses. We would not expect Casey to put up monster fantasy numbers like he did in Week Four on a consistent basis, but he could be worth adding and stashing in larger leagues for the time being if your roster is in need of some overhauling. Just remember, players like this are hit-or-miss, and Casey's best role for your team will be as a bye-week or injury fill-in. This is not the week to start him if your league lists him as a tight end. The Steelers are allowing opposing tight ends only 47.3 yards and 0.33 TDs per game. If he's a running back, the Steelers are allowing opposing backs 95.3 yards and 0.67 TDs per game, but despite that, he's still not a recommended play.

Keep an eye on Anthony Fasano. Don't go picking him up off waivers yet, but the Dolphins need a solution in the red zone and he is a good pass catcher. If they decide to utilize him this week against the Chargers and it works, then he could be worth a claim. The Chargers are allowing 5.3 receptions for 50.3 receiving yards and no touchdowns per game, giving Fasano value in PPR leagues this week.

Steelers TE Heath Miller caught a season-high five catches for 71 yards (six targets) in Week Three at Indianapolis. Though the wideouts are the primary targets in Pittsburgh's passing game, Miller has QB Ben Roethlisberger's trust, and he'll likely have productive stretches, as he's proven he can get open. The question in Week Four is whether he'll be kept in to block a little more with the Steelers' O-line batting injuries. Right now the O-line is a major weakness, relegating Miller to waiver-wire status outside the largest fantasy leagues. He's a bench play this week.

With Antonio Gates' toe still bothering him, look for Randy McMichael to see more passes thrown his way this Sunday. It would be a bit much to expect McMichael to duplicate the success of the All-Pro, but he is a viable option if tight end is a position of need for your fantasy roster. He came through last week, going 4-51-0 on five targets. While he's a recommended bench, you can do worse if forced to use him.

Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew caught 11-112-0 vs. Minnesota in Week Three, with nine catches coming in the second half. He's worth a look against teams that struggle to defend the tight end but will be inconsistent because Detroit has so many weapons and not enough footballs to go around.

Don't assume that the return of Chris Cooley is curtains for Redskins TE Fred Davis. In fact, the Redskins are using them in different roles, Cooley as a fullback and Davis as the H-back type, until FB Darrel Young is healthy. Davis could continue putting up decent numbers, although the Cowboys slowed him down Monday. The only way Cooley will take time away from Davis is if Davis begins to falter. On Monday night, the Redskins' offense as a whole took a step back as the Cowboys' defense rose to the occasion.

Tony Gonzalez (5-72-0), Jimmy Graham (6-79-0) and Jermichael Finley (7-85-3) were all very productive against the Bears this season, and Panthers TE Greg Olsen should follow suit Sunday in his return to Soldier Field. QB Cam Newton targeted Olsen a team-high 10 times in Week Three, and Olsen made seven catches for 59 yards and a TD. The two are establishing a good rapport. Olsen's production could be a bit inconsistent — Newton is going to have his ups and downs — but Olsen is worth considering for a start against the Bears. Remember, the tight end is one of the focal points in an offensive scheme that has made Chargers TE Antonio Gates a fantasy stud. Olsen is a No. 1 fantasy tight end this week.

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui, who has had his moments when healthy, continues to be a fantasy tease of the highest order due to continued health concerns. Hoomanawanui's latest battered body part is an ailing back, which has resulted in him being considered "day to day" until further notice. Even when healthy, his role will take a backseat to rookie TE Lance Kendricks. Right now he's a bench player, as well, until he adjusts to the speed and power of the game at this level.
