Umenyiora says he has acted in Giants' best interests

Giants DE Osi Umenyiora's knee injury is healing, but what about the wounds between the player and his team? The very ugly public spat between Umenyiora and the Giants — especially GM Jerry Reese — did not occur that long ago. But Umenyiora, one of the Giants' emotional leaders, said everything he has done (including delaying surgery until the preseason) has been with the team's best interest in mind. "I could have dragged this whole injury thing out this whole year and not have surgery, you understand what I mean?" Umenyiora said. "And continue to say it was hurting if I didn't want to play, but the fact of the matter is I want to get back on the football field and help this team." Our team sources say the Giants are counting on Umenyiora to return healthy in a few weeks and provide the kind of veteran leadership and perform at the level he did last season. It would provide a boost for a defense that has taken a lot of hits since the preseason.
