Because of his disappointing play, the Raiders have looked for ways to get WLB Quentin Groves off the field, choosing instead to start either five defensive linemen or five defensive backs with just two linebackers in the first two games. Groves, a fourth-year pro, isn't particularly strong against the run or as a pass rusher and although he gives great effort, the production just isn't there. In 17 career games with Oakland he has registered 49 tackles and zero sacks.
We hear reserve Trevor Scott, who can play both defensive end and linebacker, would be a better option for the weak-side 'backer spot if he were 100 percent, but Scott is still rehabbing a knee injury he suffered last season. Until he fully recovers or until Groves improves his play, we hear the team might continue to start out with an extra lineman or safety, depending on the opponent, and then use Groves in certain situations.
