In each of their first three games together starting for the Packers back in 2008, QB Aaron Rodgers and C Scott Wells had a botched exchange. There have been zero since then. Clearly, there has been zero regret over the job Wells has done this season. On an otherwise unstable line due to injury and turnover, Wells has been a pillar of strength, consistently demonstrating a strong commitment to his craft, tremendous intelligence, near-perfect technique and superb leverage. You would think those qualities would make a commitment to re-signing Wells, who is in his contract year, a no-brainer for the Packers. But GM Ted Thompson has an aversion to signing players over 30, and Wells turns 31 on Jan. 7. On the other hand, with nobody else considered even remotely ready to take over at center, team insiders tell us the odds are leaning toward the Packers making a rare exception in Wells' case.
