This is a tough week to have Patriots players on your fantasy roster — a big reason why most leagues conclude in Week 16, not Week 17. Unlike the Eagles and maybe the Jets, Patriots starters should get decent playing time, but with Wes Welker's injury in last season's finale looming in everyone's minds, don't expect a whole lot from the stars.
QB Tom Brady should start and probably play at least the first half, which could gain him a touchdown or two. But the Dolphins have a solid pass defense and will bring lots of pressure, so Week 17 is not a game to have Brady as your starter.
In the running game, with not a lot of depth behind them, RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead should still get a decent number of touches. But veteran Fred Taylor could be the back who gets the most carries. Green-Ellis is always a good bet for a score, but considering the Dolphins have a very good front seven, he's not a good start.
The best fantasy bet on the Patriots this week is TE Rob Gronkowski. Again, the Welker injury has to be on the minds of Bill Belichick, so that could limit Welker's and Deion Branch's time on the field. Aaron Hernandez could be rested after missing Week 16, so Gronkowski, no matter who is at running back or wideout, could be the guy who gets the most snaps. He tallied 4-54-2 receiving last week in Buffalo and has scored nine touchdowns in 2010.

The extreme enthusiasm of the fans at Invesco Field at Mile High was a clear indication they were happy to see rookie QB Tim Tebow under center, but we hear that excitement extends beyond the spectators.
The entire organization is pleased with what its has seen from Tebow, with everyone from the players to the coaches to the upper-level management raving about the rookie any chance they get.
A daily team observer described Tebow as having a certain "it" factor. He said it's hard to put a finger on, but that whatever the QB does, the players believe in him.
Veteran RB Correll Buckhalter told our source Tebow makes the players around him better.
"I think he's a born leader," Buckhalter said. "He has a lot of energy out there on the field and we're going to rally behind him. As long as I'm here playing running back with him, I'm going to do everything I can to help put him in a position to win."
Veterans such as CB Champ Bailey and WR Brandon Lloyd, who had supported QB Kyle Orton keeping the job, have gone on record as saying there is something special about Tebow.
And it doesn't stop with the players.
Joe Ellis, the team's chief operating officer, told our source that he likes the excitement Tebow brings to the franchise and that he was happy to see Mile High the loudest it has been in the past two years. Legendary QB John Elway, who is expected to join Broncos management very soon, has been a Tebow supporter since Day One.
The "it" factor that Tebow bring to the table was best exemplified just before the rookie scored the eventual game-winning touchdown in the Broncos' 24-23 comeback win over the Texans in Week 16.
Tebow, who was wired for sound by the NFL Network, was heard yelling to offensive coordinator Mike McCoy before the play:
"There's only one person that carries the ball right here!"
He scored on a six-yard rush on the next play, giving himself and interim head coach Eric Studesville their first-career wins.
There's no telling what Denver's future holds but after Tebow's limited audition, there's a good chance that he will be part of it.

Chad Henne has a lot to prove in what may be his final game as the Dolphins' starting quarterback. It has been an up and down season for him that saw the signalcaller lose his job after Week Nine, only to regain it when Chad Pennington got hurt. Statistically, he has improved from last season production-wise, but has thrown more interceptions with 18. Against the Patriots, he will be playing for pride and to prove that the Dolphins' organization should still have faith that he's the QB of the future. He did throw for 305 yards and two TDs against the Patriots in Week Four, and the Pats likely won't play all their starters all game, so Henne is a decent start this week.
If your fantasy league championship is this week and Tom Brady got you there, he might not get you the title. It'll be a tough decision for Brady's owners this week. Yes, he has had an MVP season, but how long will he be in the game? You can be certain Brady will start the game and likely play the entire first half. But considering what happened to Wes Welker last year (torn MCL and ACL in the season finale), Bill Belichick may be cautious. And the Dolphins do have one of the league's top pass defenses thanks to a good pass rush. Brady should be good for at least a score, but don't expect a lot of production.
It seems that the only thing preventing QB Matt Cassel from becoming a fantasy star is the Chiefs' tremendous running game. When Cassel has been able to air it out this season, the results have been impressive. Following a 314-yard, three-TD performance last week, the signalcaller now has 27-5 TD-interception ratio. Fully healthy after undergoing an appendectomy in mid-December, Cassel should produce nicely in the regular-season finale against the Raiders, but his numbers likely won't be prolific, as the Chiefs should be able to run all over Oakland.
The Bengals intercepted Ravens QB Joe Flacco four times in Week Two, but Flacco has played well since, and he has thrown two TD passes in three consecutive games. Baltimore has emphasized the run more recently, but Flacco remains a decent option in bigger leagues / two-QB formats.
Browns QB Colt McCoy completed 23-of-33 passes for 281 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions at Pittsburgh in Week Six and could merit starting consideration in bigger leagues in the rematch vs. Pittsburgh.
Bears QB Jay Cutler said he expected to be "full-go" on Sunday against the Packers, but there's a chance that head coach Lovie Smith won't play Cutler and other starters for the entire game. Owners ought to steer clear of starting Cutler and other Bears players with so much uncertainty about how they will be used.
Falcons QB Matt Ryan is coming off his least productive performances of the season, but he has a good chance of bouncing back with a much stronger game against the Panthers on Sunday. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had a good day against Carolina in Week 16, throwing for 320 yards and a touchdown, and there's no concern about Ryan not playing since Atlanta can clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a win.
Broncos QB Tim Tebow proved he could get it done at the NFL level last week, making him a viable option in the fantasy world. Tebow has now rushed for a touchdown and thrown a TD pass in both of his starts and has the type of dual-threat ability that can do wonders for fantasy owners.
You have to love Aaron Rodgers this week against a Bears team that actually might benefit from resting a lot of its key defensive players because it has already clinched the No. 2 playoff seed. Rodgers' 404 passing yards were his most ever in a regular-season game against the Giants last week. He completed 25-of-37 passes to nine different receivers and threw four TDs to four different receivers with zero interceptions. He also ran effectively as usual, scrambling for 26 yards on two carries. Heading into the regular-season finale, Rodgers has a 27-10 TD-interception ratio and needs 307 yards to reach the 4,000-yard mark.
Even if you're totally desperate for help at quarterback — which at this point in your fantasy season is highly unlikely — you probably shouldn't consider either Charlie Whitehurst or Matt Hasselbeck of the Seahawks as a fantasy option in their prime-time visit to Seattle. Whitehurst has been getting all the snaps this week, but Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is leaving the door open for a last-minute switch to Hasselbeck, who is battling a hip/glute injury suffered early last week.
For what it's worth, Alex Smith will be the quarterback for the Niners this week in their season finale against the Cardinals. Arizona does have a vulnerable secondary, which could boost Smith's fantasy numbers just a tad.
Joe Webb scored points for a few owners in the WR slot last week, even though he started at QB, and he could be an intriguing play (as a WR, especially) against the Lions. In most leagues he's available at both spots. Coming off a strong first career start, Webb will get the nod if Brett Favre (concussion) can't go.
Michael Vick is out for Sunday. Kevin Kolb will start. Vick has a deep thigh bruise and could use the rest for the playoffs.

There's nothing like the final week of the NFL regular season. If you're going to handicap the card, you better bring a list of playoff scenarios, have someone with a psychology degree on speed-dial and keep a stiff drink at the ready. That's my conclusion after simply having the playoff scenarios at my disposal as I wrote this column.
Cheers, fellow handicappers, and have a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year.
On to the picks:
Pitsburgh (-5½) at Cleveland
When these teams met in October, the Browns were game in defeat, playing Pittsburgh close for the better part of three quarters even with rookie QB Colt McCoy making his first career start. However, the Steelers, with a late burst, pulled away to win 28-10. To me, the end result was telling — Pittsburgh simply can score more easily and quickly than Cleveland. The Browns gave up a pair of long passes to WR Mike Wallace, and they did not sack QB Ben Roethlisberger once.
These teams have played three times in Eric Mangini's tenure as the Browns' head coach, and Cleveland's lone victory came when its pass rush overpowered Pittsburgh, sacking Roethlisberger eight times. To score a similar upset, the Browns are going to need to get a consistent rush vs. Roethlisberger both with conventional pressures and blitzes. The problem with blitzing Roethlisberger is that if you can't bring him down, he'll find the open receiver, as he did on TD pases to Wallace and Hines Ward in the first meeting.
I don't doubt that the Browns can play the Steelers tough for a half, or perhaps three quarters once again, but Pittsburgh's talent will be too much to overcome.
Wilkening's pick: Pittsburgh
Cincinnati (+9½) at Baltimore
For the fourth consecutive week, I see the Ravens as a top play. They are showing they can win a variety of ways. Last week, it was their defense that carried the day, with their offense doing just enough.
The defense has been the difference for the Bengals in recent matchups, holding Baltimore to 14 points or less in the past three meetings — all Cincinnati wins. However, I'm not convinced the Bengals can shut down this potent, well-balanced offense yet again. And for as spectacular as the Bengals' passing game looked in Week 16, I'll side with the Ravens' strong defense, which is quite familiar with Cincinnati.
The Ravens have been strong in regular-season home finales, winning and covering five in a row. The Bengals are in better form than they were a few weeks ago, but they have little to play for, and they are traveling to play a powerful, improving team that still can win the AFC North with a win and a Pittsburgh loss.
Wilkening's pick: Baltimore
Tennessee (+10) at Indianapolis
This line looks a tad inflated to me. We know the Colts can clinch the AFC South with a win and that the Titans have nothing to play for but pride, but can Indianapolis win this game by more than 10 points? Of their last four wins, only one was by double-digits: the 10-point victory vs. Jacksonville, which saw the Jaguars cut Indianapolis' lead to three late only to give up a kickoff return on an attempted onside kick.
Obviously, the big question here is whether the Titans show up. They fell behind early at Kansas City a week ago, which forced them to get away from their running game. If they can stay close early, they could present some problems for the Colts, who have surrendered 24 points or more in 8-of-10 games, including 28 to Tennessee just three weeks ago.
Wilkening's pick: Tennessee
Minnesota (+3½) at Detroit
The Vikings' strong performance in an upset of the Eagles Tuesday night caused this line to drop. That's fine by me. The Lions, who have won three consecutive games, are finishing strongly, and I believe they can even the score with the Vikings after a 24-10 loss at Minnesota in Week Three. The Vikings could be due for a letdown after an emotional win and a short week of preparation, and their play in losses to the Giants and Bears in Weeks 14 and 15 gives me pause. I'll take the favorite.
Wilkening's pick: Detroit

Rather quietly, versatile TE Daniel Fells has become a very reliable receiving weapon for rookie QB Sam Bradford, establishing career highs in catches (38) and receiving yards (352). "He's been very solid. If he becomes a free agent with the rules staying the same, the Rams will face an interesting situation," one team insider said of Fells. "He could do a little better as a blocker. But he'll flash some real playmaking ability. He's a hard worker, and he's accountable, too." Ideally, we hear the Rams would like to bring all three of their primary tight ends back. Fells has shared the load this season with Billy Bajema, who is mainly a blocking specialist, and rookie TE Michael Hoomanawanui, who has displayed impressive flashes as a receiver but has had real problems staying healthy. "The key is how much they feel they can depend on Hoomanawanui, who also had ankle problems at Illinois," the insider said.

The Patriots placed six players on the Pro Bowl team, more than any of their Super Bowl teams. The irony came on defense, where the Patriots' 27th-ranked "D" is sending four starters to Hawaii. S Brandon Meriweather was the head scratcher of the group in his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod. Meriweather has three interceptions, but had to regain his starting job earlier in the season from James Sanders. Meriweather is best at over-the-top coverage, but he doesn't bring much help in defending the run. Meriweather is their guy on the outside, but he takes a lot of chances, as seen when he misjudged a deep third-down pass that resulted in a 66-yard TD catch for Green Bay's James Jones in Week 15. One daily team observer sees the team possibly parting ways with Meriweather after the season considering the depth the Pats have at the position. With Jarrad Page healthy, the Patriots have two smart, physical safeties in Page and Sanders. Plus, Patrick Chung is the team's run stopper and an emerging playmaker.

I'll admit, I thought that Joe Webb for sure would be moved to receiver next year based on his play against the Bears. After Tuesday night, I am not so sure anymore.
Webb was terrific. Flawed, yes. Inexperienced, definitely. But he looked like a quarterback. A pro QB, even. Something you could work with. Something intriguing. Something unrefined and perhaps undefined, but coaches like those guys. They like testing themselves to mold players such as these.
Running QBs have been the rage for a decade or more, and Michael Vick has reinvented himself this season in front of the football nation's watchful eyes. Webb never will be Vick, doesn't have even half his raw ability. But who does? I think there is an intriguing, albeit far-from-complete package here.
The Vikings right now have no direction at quarterback otherwise. Brett Favre might not be done, but he's done in Minnesota. Tarvaris Jackson is a free agent, expected to look elsewhere for work. The only other QB on the roster who might — might — get a chance next season would be Rhett Bomar, plucked off the Giants' practice squad a few weeks ago. He's virtually a complete unknown.
And Webb, sure, he's a mostly unknown. But I saw enough Tuesday night to think he has some unique skills. And it was night and day watching him throw against the Eagles compared to the Bears game a week before, as if it were two different guys from one week to the next. Remember, Daunte Culpepper did nothing his first season, nada. Aaron Rodgers took three years of waiting. Steve Young waited half a career and yet still made the Hall of Fame. And Vick didn't really become SuperVick until this season.
Patience is a virtue, and no more so than at quarterback. Bury this guy in the film room and let him absorb an offense over a year or two, and you might have something.
Like a time capsule, sped up a little: Check back in 2012 and Webb might be marinated enough to be a quarterback we're talking about seriously.

The Broncos have signed DT Louis Leonard to fill the roster spot vacated by LB Lee Robinson, who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Leonard joins the Broncos after being released by the Patriots on Dec. 22. He has 33 career tackles and is in his fourth NFL season.
Robinson had been promoted from the practice squad when LB Joe Mays (knee) was placed on I.R.
The way we see it
Leonard will provide depth on the Broncos defensive line. Denver has been forced to shift back-and-forth between 3-4 and 4-3 defensive schemes all season and was in need of another body up front.
