The mess involving Donovan McNabb and the Redskins took another turn on Thursday thanks to comments made by McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith.
Smith released a statement saying that the Shanahans (head coach Mike and his son, offensive coordinator Kyle) have "made this an extremely difficult relationship to maintain." Smith singled out Kyle, the team's offensive coordinator and reportedly the one who decided to start Rex Grossman last Sunday.
"I believe there is tension between Donovan and Kyle that's rooted in the fact that Donovan has suggested modifications to Kyle's offense based on intricacies Donovan has learned in his NFL career," Smith said. "For example, Donovan has asked all year that the team run more screen passes to help manage the pass rush more effectively. Ironically Kyle decided to employ Donovan's suggestions after he unceremoniously benched him on Sunday."
McNabb is having his worst season statistically since his rookie campaign in 2009. He has thrown 14 TD passes and a career-high 15 interceptions. Mike Shanahan removed McNabb from Washington's Week Eight game against the Lions with two minutes to go, starting the drama between the signalcaller and the organization.
The Redskins offered McNabb a lucrative contract extension, but can cut him and only lose $3.5 million.
The way we see it
It has been a drama-filled season for the Shanahans and the Redskins. With a 5-9 record, they will miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season and there is clearly plenty of animosity involving the star quarterback they acquired in the offseason. These comments from Smith make it seem likely McNabb will be throwing elsewhere in 2011 and they seriously question the Shanahans' decisions.
