Upset of the Year: Giovani Segura KO 8 Ivan Calderon

A hard-punching, Mexican-born, 28-year-old, WBA junior flyweight (108 pounds) champion, Giovani Segura of Bell Gardens, Calif., went into the hometown of the previously unbeaten, legendary southpaw WBO king Ivan Calderon, a 35-year-old pure boxer who took on the younger man on Aug. 28 at Coliseo Mario 'Quijote' Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

When the dust cleared following a ferocious night of fighting, Segura had secured his seventh knockout in as many consecutive wins against a man who is considered one of the premiere competitors in the sport -- this at 1 minute, 34 seconds of the eighth round.

Segura unified the WBA and WBO belts and improved to 25-1-1 with his 21st knockout, dropping Calderon to 34-1-1 overall, and a remarkable 18-1-1 in championship bouts.

The stoppage of Calderon was the result of a left to the body followed by a right to the body from which Calderon failed to rise as referee Jose Hiram Rivera reached the count of 10.

After the win over Calderon, Segura, who was promoted by Top Rank Promotions, rose to super flyweight (115 pounds), where he stopped Manuel Vargas in the seventh round of their Novembver bout to improve to 26-1-1, with his 22nd stoppage win.

On the year, Segura was 4-0 with as many knockouts, including those over Walter Tello, and, Ronald Ramos, respectively, in three, and, four rounds, in February and March. The win over Tello was in defense of Segura's WBA belt, and the one over Ramos was a non-title, super flyweight bout.
