I'll admit, I thought that Joe Webb for sure would be moved to receiver next year based on his play against the Bears. After Tuesday night, I am not so sure anymore.
Webb was terrific. Flawed, yes. Inexperienced, definitely. But he looked like a quarterback. A pro QB, even. Something you could work with. Something intriguing. Something unrefined and perhaps undefined, but coaches like those guys. They like testing themselves to mold players such as these.
Running QBs have been the rage for a decade or more, and Michael Vick has reinvented himself this season in front of the football nation's watchful eyes. Webb never will be Vick, doesn't have even half his raw ability. But who does? I think there is an intriguing, albeit far-from-complete package here.
The Vikings right now have no direction at quarterback otherwise. Brett Favre might not be done, but he's done in Minnesota. Tarvaris Jackson is a free agent, expected to look elsewhere for work. The only other QB on the roster who might — might — get a chance next season would be Rhett Bomar, plucked off the Giants' practice squad a few weeks ago. He's virtually a complete unknown.
And Webb, sure, he's a mostly unknown. But I saw enough Tuesday night to think he has some unique skills. And it was night and day watching him throw against the Eagles compared to the Bears game a week before, as if it were two different guys from one week to the next. Remember, Daunte Culpepper did nothing his first season, nada. Aaron Rodgers took three years of waiting. Steve Young waited half a career and yet still made the Hall of Fame. And Vick didn't really become SuperVick until this season.
Patience is a virtue, and no more so than at quarterback. Bury this guy in the film room and let him absorb an offense over a year or two, and you might have something.
Like a time capsule, sped up a little: Check back in 2012 and Webb might be marinated enough to be a quarterback we're talking about seriously.
