Week 17 fantasy tips: QBs

Chad Henne has a lot to prove in what may be his final game as the Dolphins' starting quarterback. It has been an up and down season for him that saw the signalcaller lose his job after Week Nine, only to regain it when Chad Pennington got hurt. Statistically, he has improved from last season production-wise, but has thrown more interceptions with 18. Against the Patriots, he will be playing for pride and to prove that the Dolphins' organization should still have faith that he's the QB of the future. He did throw for 305 yards and two TDs against the Patriots in Week Four, and the Pats likely won't play all their starters all game, so Henne is a decent start this week.

If your fantasy league championship is this week and Tom Brady got you there, he might not get you the title. It'll be a tough decision for Brady's owners this week. Yes, he has had an MVP season, but how long will he be in the game? You can be certain Brady will start the game and likely play the entire first half. But considering what happened to Wes Welker last year (torn MCL and ACL in the season finale), Bill Belichick may be cautious. And the Dolphins do have one of the league's top pass defenses thanks to a good pass rush. Brady should be good for at least a score, but don't expect a lot of production.

It seems that the only thing preventing QB Matt Cassel from becoming a fantasy star is the Chiefs' tremendous running game. When Cassel has been able to air it out this season, the results have been impressive. Following a 314-yard, three-TD performance last week, the signalcaller now has 27-5 TD-interception ratio. Fully healthy after undergoing an appendectomy in mid-December, Cassel should produce nicely in the regular-season finale against the Raiders, but his numbers likely won't be prolific, as the Chiefs should be able to run all over Oakland.

The Bengals intercepted Ravens QB Joe Flacco four times in Week Two, but Flacco has played well since, and he has thrown two TD passes in three consecutive games. Baltimore has emphasized the run more recently, but Flacco remains a decent option in bigger leagues / two-QB formats.

Browns QB Colt McCoy completed 23-of-33 passes for 281 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions at Pittsburgh in Week Six and could merit starting consideration in bigger leagues in the rematch vs. Pittsburgh.

Bears QB Jay Cutler said he expected to be "full-go" on Sunday against the Packers, but there's a chance that head coach Lovie Smith won't play Cutler and other starters for the entire game. Owners ought to steer clear of starting Cutler and other Bears players with so much uncertainty about how they will be used.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan is coming off his least productive performances of the season, but he has a good chance of bouncing back with a much stronger game against the Panthers on Sunday. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had a good day against Carolina in Week 16, throwing for 320 yards and a touchdown, and there's no concern about Ryan not playing since Atlanta can clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a win.

Broncos QB Tim Tebow proved he could get it done at the NFL level last week, making him a viable option in the fantasy world. Tebow has now rushed for a touchdown and thrown a TD pass in both of his starts and has the type of dual-threat ability that can do wonders for fantasy owners.

You have to love Aaron Rodgers this week against a Bears team that actually might benefit from resting a lot of its key defensive players because it has already clinched the No. 2 playoff seed. Rodgers' 404 passing yards were his most ever in a regular-season game against the Giants last week. He completed 25-of-37 passes to nine different receivers and threw four TDs to four different receivers with zero interceptions. He also ran effectively as usual, scrambling for 26 yards on two carries.  Heading into the regular-season finale, Rodgers has a 27-10 TD-interception ratio and needs 307 yards to reach the 4,000-yard mark.

Even if you're totally desperate for help at quarterback — which at this point in your fantasy season is highly unlikely — you probably shouldn't consider either Charlie Whitehurst or Matt Hasselbeck of the Seahawks as a fantasy option in their prime-time visit to Seattle.  Whitehurst has been getting all the snaps this week, but Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is leaving the door open for a last-minute switch to Hasselbeck, who is battling a hip/glute injury suffered early last week.

For what it's worth, Alex Smith will be the quarterback for the Niners this week in their season finale against the Cardinals. Arizona does have a vulnerable secondary, which could boost Smith's fantasy numbers just a tad.

Joe Webb scored points for a few owners in the WR slot last week, even though he started at QB, and he could be an intriguing play (as a WR, especially) against the Lions. In most leagues he's available at both spots. Coming off a strong first career start, Webb will get the nod if Brett Favre (concussion) can't go.

Michael Vick is out for Sunday. Kevin Kolb will start. Vick has a deep thigh bruise and could use the rest for the playoffs.
