Stuck with seven consecutive losses and counting, the Cardinals’ 2010 comedy of errors continues in the desert. So does the team’s increasingly depressing situation at quarterback. With Derek Anderson suffering a possible concussion that ended his latest forgettable performance (7-of-20 passing for 93 yards and a costly interception), Max Hall probably out for the rest of the season after dislocating his left shoulder trying to recover his fumble and fellow rookie John Skelton still considered a major work in progress, the Cardinals might be forced to enlist the services of a new signalcaller in the next day or two.
Is Red Skelton available? Even though he passed away years ago, he’d probably show more life than most of the Cardinals, who have guaranteed frazzled head coach Ken Whisenhunt his first losing season at the helm in four years following a listless 19-6 loss to the division-rival Rams that many fans obviously had a hard time watching, as evidenced by the manner in which the seats steadily emptied out of University of Phoenix Stadium.
The PFW Spin
Actually, we might be guilty of being a bit too hard on Arizona’s defense, which did play a lot better Sunday against the Rams, limiting St. Louis to 288 yards. But the offense has become a very cruel joke. Anderson was not made available to the media after the game — which is no surprise, considering his well-documented meltdown after the Monday-night loss to the 49ers — and Whisenhunt indicated that it was too early to tell just who would be under center this Sunday at home against the Broncos.
But the early feeling is that Skelton, an unknown commodity who at the very least would keep the Cardinals' fan base somewhat interested, will get the nod. With excellent size and a strong arm — qualities that Hall has shown he sadly lacks — Skelton at least looks the part. With nothing to play for except their pride, it makes sense at this stage to at least give Skelton a shot.
After all, things can’t get any worse in the desert.
