Former NFL RB Warrick Dunn will be honored as a Jefferson Award winner on June 21 for his achievements in raising money for charity and helping others. The award is known as the "Nobel Prize for Public Service" and past winners include General Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey and Colts QB Peyton Manning.
Dunn runs the Warrick Dunn Family Foundation, which helps single-parent families purchase homes and furnishings. The running back lost his mother when she was killed in the line of duty as a police officer, and he was forced to raise his five siblings on his own. Since starting the foundation, he has helped raise money to place down payments on more than 100 homes for single-parent families in Georgia, Louisiana and Florida.
"What Warrick Dunn has accomplished in his lifetime is nothing short of extraordinary," said Sam Bears, founder and president of the American Institute for Public Service, in a statement. "He is a consummate team player, on and off the football field, first taking care of his family after the untimely death of his mother and later taking care of the communities closest to his heart."
Also being honored this year as a Jefferson Award winner is Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner of the Chicago Bulls and White Sox.
