Jets QB Ainge intends to retire

Jets QB Erik Ainge intends to retire because of injuries, he told The Associated Press Thursday.

"This isn't the step I wanted, but it's the hand I'm dealt," Ainge said. "There's nothing I'd love more than to come back to New Jersey when the lockout's over and compete for a job and be around those guys and their families. I miss them as people, but it's just not in the cards physically right now."

Ainge, 25, announced earlier in June that he had torn the rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He also had surgery on his right foot in January, according to the the AP.

Ainge missed the 2010 season after being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. In March, he disclosed in an interview with ESPNNewYork.com that he had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and had been diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar disorder.

Ainge was the Jets' fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft.
