In the midst of replacing the Metrodome's roof, it was announced Friday that the artificial turf might have to replaced as well, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Officials believe the turf can be made playable, but if not, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission authorized a bidding process to ensure that new turf could be ready by the time the Vikings begin preseason games in mid-August. New turf could cost up to $800,000.
"We believe the turf will be fine," commission chair Ted Mondale said. "However, with the amount of rain that's come in and with the boards on top of it, there may be parts of the turf or all of it that needs to be replaced."
A December blizzard damaged the roof and forced the Vikings to play one home game at Ford Field in Detroit and another at TCF Bank Stadium. Work continues on the new roof, which is expected to be finished by Aug. 1.
