Here's what is known about the Raiders' quarterback situation heading into the 2011 season: Jason Campbell is the starter and Kyle Boller is a backup. Other than that, the position is a mystery.
It had been expected that when free agency begins, management would either re-sign Bruce Gradkowski or bring in another veteran signalcaller to compete with Boller for the No. 2 spot and provide more depth in case of injury. But a new, younger option has emerged as a possibility: Terrelle Pryor.
The former Ohio State quarterback announced he is entering the NFL supplemental draft, which will take place sometime in July. Although Pryor's agent said he thought that his client would be a first-round pick, it is expected that no team will risk anything more than a mid-round selection in the 2012 draft. The question is, would the Raiders be interested in doing so?
Pryor was a run-first quarterback as a Buckeye, and his passing accuracy is a major concern, leading some to wonder if he'd be a better fit as a receiver or Brad Smith-like "Wildcat" QB. He does have a strong arm and terrific foot speed, two attributes the Raiders have been known to salivate over with other players. The Raiders are considered one of the teams that would play Pryor as a QB.
Problem is, to acquire the prospect, Oakland would have to sacrifice a 2012 draft pick. The team is already without its second- and fourth-round picks because of prior trades, one of which netted them Campbell. By adding Pryor, the team would have only four picks next April.
The Raiders would like to have a younger QB option on their roster, and the team has never shied away from acquiring players with questionable character, which Pryor has based off his lingering troubles with the NCAA. They must decide, however, if taking a developmental prospect this summer is worth more than a draft pick next spring.
