As promised, Genghis Con brings us the second installment of his awesome "Miami Hustle" web-doc series, profiling the boys from American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida. This episode focuses on 40-year-old undefeated top-ten ranked flyweight and former Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Alexis Vila in the run-up to his fight with Lewis "Hoodini" McKenzie (10-6) at "MFA: New Generation 4" (featuring Dada 5000!) in February.
Vila likes pizza and naps before fights, but dislikes his girlfriend's excuses for her own ongoing struggle to cut weight. JZ Cavalcante and Jorge Santiago like surfing. Jorge Masvidal likes machetes and hitting on ring girls, but dislikes weigh-in posers and waiting for commission officials. And trainer Juan Carlos Feraldo likes shotguns and racially-charged pranks.
Then it's on to highlights from the fight, where Vila pretty much man-handles McKenzie and puts him away with G&P in the second round. Check out another highlight clip from the promoter HERE, or the entire fight with fucked-up sound HERE.
It must be hard to find decent fights at flyweight, which is probably why Vila opted to enter Bellator's Season 5 bantamweight tourney, which kicks off in September. There he'll be joined by current featherweight champ Joe Warren, recent screwjob victim Marcos Galvao, Chase Beebe, and 3-time featherweight semi-finalist Wilson Reis. Vila hit 125 lbs for the McKenzie fight fairly easily (despite later using an IV to rehydrate), so going up in weight will be a serious test for him, especially if he happens to meet Warren. But such is the life of the wee folk.
New episodes in the series have so far dropped on Monday nights, and Episode 3 is promised for the same 8PM EST timeslot... just like a TV show or a podcast (*cough*)! So watch the Miami Hustle site, or here for our added semi-witty banter, and dig the preview of Episode 3 after the jump:
