Packers-Falcons fourth-quarter reflections

As I indicated what might happen in my pregame prediction for this game, Atlanta’s special teams ended up being the key factor in a gut-busting 20-17 Falcons victory courtesy of Matt Bryant’s 47-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining.

Green Bay’s special teams weren’t nearly as special on this afternoon, with an ill-advised facemask penalty by Matt Wilhelm after a nice return by Eric Weems helping to set up Bryant’s game-winning score. The Packers’ special teams had earlier been charged with a few costly flags.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan was as cool as a cucumber driving the Falcons into position for the winning score, as Atlanta remained true to form as arguably the league’s best fourth-quarter team.

Aaron Rodgers was every bit the equal of Rodgers down the stretch, delivering a 10-yard bullet to Jordy Nelson in the corner of the endzone to tie the game with just over a minute remaining. A shovel pass to James Jones on fourth down helped keep the Packers’ final TD drive alive, but in the end, Atlanta got the job done to extend its NFC-leading record to 9-2 and drop the Packers a game behind the Bears at 7-4 — at least temporarily.
