Week 10 fantasy tips: RBs

The Chiefs had their worst rushing outing of the season last week at Oakland, but they should bounce back in a big way this Sunday at Denver. The Broncos are one of the worst run defenses in the league, allowing 154.6 yards per game. They also have surrendered a league-worst 14 TDs on the ground. Expect Jamaal Charles, who had only 10 carries last week, to have a much bigger role this time around. Thomas Jones also is a good bet to score in a very favorable matchup.

For those of you with BenJarvus Green-Ellis in your leagues, definitely bench him this week. The 'Law Firm' was shut down by the Browns in Week Nine and going against the vaunted Steelers run defense, don't expect him to do much. While he may be the Patriots' goal-line back, the team may pass if it gets near the endzone. You may even consider cutting Green-Ellis soon as Fred Taylor returns to practice. Plus, when the team is behind, Danny Woodhead has gotten the snaps in the backfield, and with the Patriots' defense, that could happen often.

You might want to avoid Cardinals RB Beanie Wells as a fantasy option this weekend. After only one carry last week against the Vikings, Wells' practice time has been limited again this week because of continued swelling in his right knee as a result of an injection more than a week ago. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has indicated to team insiders that, in order for Wells to get a fair amount of playing time, he must be able to get in as many practice reps as possible.

At present, the best fantasy prospect among Cardinals running backs is probably LaRod Stephens-Howling, especially if your league includes special-teams scores.  Stephens-Howling registered his second kickoff return for a score last week in Minnesota — a 96-yarder that was most impressive. He also has a 30-yard TD run this season and is very dangerous in space every time he touches the ball.

49ers RB Frank Gore, who will be facing the Rams' defense this Sunday and will be attempting to run for at least 100 yards for the fourth game in a row, has had excellent fantasy success against the Rams in recent times. Gore has had a pair of 100-yard rushing games and has scored four TDs in his past two outings against St. Louis. That said, the Rams' run defense is greatly improved this season, having allowed only one 100-yard rusher so far this season (Oakland's Darren McFadden in Week Two).

The Panthers will start third-stringer Mike Goodson at running back against the Buccaneers with RBs DeAngelo Williams (foot) and Jonathan Stewart (head) expected to miss the game. Any back going up against Tampa Bay's 30th-ranked run defense is usually worth a start, but playing Goodson is a major gamble. He has never had to carry the load before and isn't built to do so. Unless an owner is an extreme bind, it's best to stay away from Goodson.

After struggling to produce against the Bills' porous run defense, it's hard to imagine Bears RBs Matt Forté and Chester Taylor doing much against Minnesota, which ranks seventh against the run. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz also has hinted at getting Taylor more involved in the game against his old team, which could take carries away from Forté. Neither player is an appealing fantasy option against the Vikings.

After not playing in the Week Six loss at New England, Ravens RB Willis McGahee has had 21 touches (17 carries, four receptions), 140 rushing-receiving yards and two TDs in two games since. Overall, he's getting 9.1 touches a game.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno had a chance to let his injured hamstring heal over the bye week and should have a big day against the Chiefs. While Denver's running game has been virtually non-existent all year, it seems the Broncos are now placing their rushing hopes firmly on the shoulders of Moreno. No other running back has carried the ball in the past two weeks, and QB Kyle Orton has even been looking to the second-year back in the passing game. Kansas City has relinquished nearly 4.5 yards per carry over the past four games, which should make for a good fantasy week for Moreno.

Tough call on Lions RB Jahvid Best this week, as he is battling through two painful toes but is facing the Bills. We'll put a soft buy tag on him in this game, but don't expect explosive results as Kevin Smith is likely to work into the rotation.
