Portis' Redskins career might be over

The Redskins placed RB Clinton Portis on injured reserve, and it's very possible that he might not play for the team again. This is the case despite the fact that head coach Mike Shanahan said, "I don't think there's any question (Portis can still play). He's got strong will. He's got that inner drive that most people don't have." While Portis can run effectively when he's healthy (he looked good before leaving the Week 11 game early) and is an excellent pass protector, he just can't be counted on to stay healthy. This is the bottom line. The Redskins would consider bringing him back at a highly discounted rate, but they would want plenty of options at the RB position otherwise. Portis only would be an insurance policy if he did return, and there's really no guarantee at all he'll want to be viewed — or paid — as that. Keiland Williams gives great effort, and Ryan Torain has some natural running skills, but it's likely that the future franchise back currently isn't on the team's roster.
