Raiders owner Al Davis is known for taking risks with his draft choices, so the decision made on Aug. 22 by the team to use a third-round pick on Terrelle Pryor in the supplemental draft caught no one off guard. Pryor is tall, fast and athletic, three characteristics that Davis loves on his roster. He also can contribute starting in Week Six following a five-game suspension, a great benefit to a team looking to win right away, so sacrificing a 2012 draft choice wasn't considered a great loss.
The team still isn't sure what it has in the former Ohio State quarterback and is likely to make that evaluation behind closed doors, away from the peering eyes of reporters and scouts. Questions about Pryor's throwing accuracy and leadership ability have led many to wonder if he would be better off playing a different position. Given his size (6-foot-5) and speed (4.38 in the 40), there are several spots on the field where he could make an impact.
Members of the organization have said publicly that they will give Pryor every chance to succeed at quarterback down the road, though we hear from sources that his greatest impact in 2011 will come in special formations and situations. That could mean anything such as being a "Wildcat" QB, lining up wide in a trick formation or teaming with RB Darren McFadden to run the option. Pryor will not be rushed into a pressure situation, and with Jason Campbell firmly locked in as Oakland's starting quarterback and Trent Edwards a solid backup, the rookie will be able to ease into life in the NFL.
