Texans FB Casey exceeding expectations

Although it is way too early to declare that the Texans will be fine without former FB Vonta Leach, who departed for Baltimore in free agency, early returns suggests that his replacement, James Casey, could excel in his new role. Casey, who played tight end collegiately at Rice, could not find his way onto the field at tight end in his first two seasons because of a logjam there, with former Pro Bowler Owen Daniels and Joel Dreessen ahead of him on the depth chart. So Casey jumped at the opportunity to play fullback, where head coach Gary Kubiak has used him in a variety of ways in the first two preseason games. Word is Kubiak loves creating opportunities for Casey, sending him in motion and employing him as a tight end, H-back and receiver, in addition to his role as a lead blocker. One daily team observer raved about Casey recently, referring to him as "Mr. Versatility" and saying he would be a top tight end on many teams. With the Texans' ground game banging out 4.7 yards a clip in the first two preseason games with Casey as the lead blocker, it is fair to say he is exceeding expectations early.
