DE Johnson agrees to re-sign with Panthers

The Panthers and DE Charles Johnson, one of the top free agents on the open market, have agreed on a deal to keep him in Carolina.

The six-year deal is worth worth $76 million with $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus, according to Pro Football Talk.

Johnson was a breakout star last season, recording 11½ sacks in his first year as a full-time starter.

The way we see it

If Johnson stays put, it's a win for the Panthers. He's the one proven pass rusher on the defensive line and Carolina would have a very difficult time filling the void if he departed.

Front-loading the contract with the big bonus would help the Panthers get closer to the new salary-cap floor for this season. Teams have to spend 99 percent of the $120 million cap.

He had to wait a while for contract clarity because of the four-month lockout, but Johnson appears to be one of the biggest winners in free agency, and the Panthers helped themselves, too.
