The Texans have signed free agent CB Johnathan Joseph on Thursday night, filling a major area of need on their roster. The news was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and confirmed by PFW correspondent John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
McClain tweeted that the contract is for five years, worth $48.75 million. Of that, $23.5 million is guaranteed, including $12.5 million signing bonus.
Joseph, 27, joins the team that had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season. In his five NFL seasons, all with the Bengals, Joseph nabbed 14 interceptions to go along with 76 passes defensed.
There had been speculation the Texans were contenders to sign the top cornerback on the market, former-Raider Nnamdi Asomugha. In the end, however, Houston GM Rick Smith opted to not risk it, signing Joseph while the elite corner was still on the market.
The way we see it
The Texans had to address their secondary in free agency and did so by signing one of the top players on the market. Adding Joseph to the mix instantly makes the team's pass defense better, which is important when you're in a division with Peyton Manning.
