Trent Edwards, who played for both the Bills and Jaguars last season, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Raiders. In Oakland, he will be the backup to Jason Campbell.
Edwards started during Weeks One and Two for Buffalo in 2010, but was cut after failing to produce in either of those games. He was then picked up by Jacksonville, where he appeared in three games, starting one of them. For the season, Edwards threw two touchdowns and five interceptions, completing 54.5 percent of his throws.
A second-round pick of the Bills in 2007, Edwards' best season came in 2008, when he was the team's starter for 14 games. During that season he posted career-highs with 2,699 yards and 11 TD passes.
Campbell was named the Raiders' starting quarterback at the beginning of the offseason by new head coach Hue Jackson. Last season he split time with Bruce Gradkowski, who has since left Oakland and signed with the Bengals.
The way we see it
There was no mystery the Raiders wanted to add a veteran backup to their roster, as the only QBs under contract were Campbell and the inconsistent Kyle Boller. Edwards is a bit of a surprise, however, given his tendency to be conservative with the ball (see his nickname: Captain Checkdown). Oakland has a stable of fast wideouts who love to run deep, so it could be an issue if Edwards is pressed into action.
