Dominick Cruz vs. Demetrious Johnson, Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles on Tap

For the first time in four years, the UFC will present a championship bout free on cable television.

Dominick Cruz is set to put his bantamweight strap on the line against Demetrious Johnson on Oct. 1 at UFC on Versus 6, UFC president Dana White told NBCSports.com on Thursday night and later confirmed on UFC.com.

Cruz (18-1) earlier this month made his UFC debut in a successful title defense against Urijah Faber via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 132. Johnson (10-1) has been one of the leading candidates for the No. 1 contender spot with his wins this year against Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto and Miguel Torres.

The last time a title fight was offered without pay-per-view was the champion vs. champion bout between UFC light heavyweight titleholder Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and PRIDE champion Dan Henderson at UFC 75. It's important to note that while the fight was presented on Spike TV, it took place in the U.K. and aired in the U.S. via same-day, tape-delay.

With Cruz booked to face Johnson, the two other contenders Faber and Brian Bowles will face off at the UFC 139 pay-per-view on Nov. 19, White also confirmed to UFC.com.

The winner between Faber and Bowles will likely be next in line for the bantamweight belt. As a bantamweight, Faber (25-5) is 2-1 with wins against Takeya Mizugaki and Eddie Wineland. Since losing the belt to Cruz at WEC 47 in March 2010, Bowles (10-1) has defeated Damacio Page and Mizugaki in UFC contests this year.
