After helping deliver Cam Newton as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, quarterbacks coach George Whitfield is about ready to move on to his next client: Terrelle Pryor.
The Canton (Ohio) Repository reported on Sunday that Pryor is close to hiring Whitfield as his coach leading up to the supplemental draft, which is expected to be held sometime in July. Pryor, who announced in June he was leaving Ohio State to enter the league, is considered a mid-round prospect. He has been working out in Florida in preparation for the draft.
"It is my understanding I am heading (to Miami)," Whitfield told the newspaper. "I look forward to working with him. From a kid that grew up in Ohio and knows how important the Buckeyes are and my relationship with (former Ohio State) coach (Jim) Tressel and his relationship with coach Tressel ... on top of the fact he's talented and a big competitor. It's a challenge to me. I know Terrelle wants to be as good as he can be."
The way we see it
This is a smart move by Pryor and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Whitfield is considered one of the top QB tutors around, having worked with Newton leading up to the draft in April and also with Ben Roethlisberger while the Steelers quarterback was suspended last year. There are plenty of doubts surrounding Pryor's ability to be the leader of a pro-style offense, something the player and his new coach will work on.
